He discussed the challenges of the immigration process and his career progression from San Antonio to MD Anderson. His initial work in neurosciences and oncology, specifically using functional MRI techniques, was interrupted by a break from career to care for his son and led to an exploration of non-clinical roles, including completing a program from Harvard Business School. This episode emphasizes the need of developing a mindset towards taking risks and being open to opportunities due to globalization and exposure to different cultures. The importance of embracing new technologies and collaboration in the healthcare industry was highlighted, along with the need for a holistic approach that incorporates digital technologies and home healthcare. Denise Billen-Mejia www.healandberadiant.com My time in medicine began not long after S.O.A.P .became a thing and several of the older physicians were very suspicious, some kept an entire family's history in a single record and only a few secluded spots in the hospital were available for longform documentation. Charts were often indecipherable to all but the author and billing staff. EMR was seen as a wonderful far off thing so this episode was very educational for me. The pdf Dr Stegink alludes to in the episode is available through the link below. Dr. Ryan Stegink has always been curious about how the world works, majoring in physics before going to medical school. Dr. Stegink now works as an outpatient general pediatrician and enjoys caring for patients from all over the world, using his Spanish skills on a daily basis. He also enjoys encouraging colleagues and trainees, having been through burnout himself less than a year out of training. Part of Dr. Stegink's path through burnout included optimizing his own charting and practice workflows, and he now coaches other physicians around charting so they can create margin to support their own values and priorities through his signature program, Charting Mastery!. An experienced pediatrician who completed her residency in 1998 and in private practice for almost 25 years she recognized early the influence of politics and policies on healthcare and she took on leadership roles in the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and was appointed to the National AAP committee on federal government affairs. In 2017, Melinda attended a technology conference that gave her a fresh perspective on the changing healthcare landscape. Inspired by this, she co-founded a nonprofit organization using telemedicine and a mobile unit to provide healthcare to underserved children in schools. Seeking to deliver innovative and patient-centered care while avoiding an overwhelming patient load, she decided to start her own solo practice. Despite launching during the pandemic, her practice has flourished, making a positive impact on the community. Sujin chose a hybrid career of clinical, research and teaching on leaving fellowship and now, also, coaches physicians. We talk about the changing face of medicine and the increasing acceptance of alternative ways of practicing now; part-time, telemedicine... She notes there is still hesitancy in mainstream academic medicine but things are slowly changing. Physicians are human beings first and being a healthy human is necessary to be a healthy physician. Pursuing other career opportunities is sometimes the better choice and Sujin makes the case for finding a coach to help with the process. It is clear more support and coaching programs within medical schools and the healthcare system, in general, would be beneficial for all medical staff. "... I see some people thinking that looking for help is a sign of weakness. No, it's not! Actually, the people who look for help are the ones that are brave and strong. They acknowledge they need help and go for it. I think that's real true authentic strength actually, not a weakness." In this episode I catch up with Linda Saether who shares her unique journey with me- from practicing medicine to becoming a successful writer. We first met at Medical School and last saw each other when Linda graduated from Pediatrics and went off to VA to practice medicine and grow her family. Over the years I heard she had moved back to FL and changed to Urgent Care but it was only in this interview that I heard the whole story. Illness forced her retirement from clinical medicine yet provided her with the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of writing. Her historical fiction novels, which feature fictitious characters, in real events, are a testament to her creativity and talent. Linda also opens up about the challenges of being a new and unknown writer. She discusses the difficulties of self-promotion and the lack of support from small publishing companies. However, commitment to improving her craft led her to take classes on novel and screenwriting, which helped her to learn about structure and format. Despite the challenges she persevered and has become an accomplished author and encourages aspiring writers to take classes and workshops to improve their skills. She also advises them to read as much as possible and to write every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. Overall, Linda's story is an inspiration to anyone who dreams of pursuing their passion, no matter the obstacles. Dr. Elizabeth Hughes is a Stanford-trained physician with more than 25 years of clinical experience. For most of her career she believed that conventional medicine was the only effective method of treating illness and injury. Her perspective was radically changed after a patient was cured of a chronic, “incurable” condition with a simple change in belief. She came to realize that the conventional medical approach is fundamentally flawed. Instead of healing and curing, the current paradigm has produced millions of people labeled as chronically ill, forever dependent on medication, cared for by a generation of physicians who are frustrated, burned out, and suffering with their own stress-related illnesses. She vowed to find a better solution. Her quest led her to study non-western systems of health and healing, placebo research, and the emerging sciences of epigenetics and psychoneuroimmunology. In the process she became a registered yoga teacher, a health coach, a PQ (Positive Intelligence) coach, and a practitioner of transformational archetypal work as well as several energy medicine modalities. By blending her scientific training with principles of self-healing, Dr. Hughes guides her clients — both physicians and the general public — to create their own sustainable path to health, wellbeing, and professional satisfaction. In addition to her coaching and mentorship practice, Dr. Hughes is the inventor and founder of Beyond Dermatologics, a breakthrough line of steroid-free, science-based skin care products designed to treat common skin conditions without the harmful side effects of topical steroids, as well as being the medical columnist for Modern Warrior magazine. -- www.elizabethhughesmd.com https://linktr.ee/elizabethhughesmd 206-225-4731 To claim CME Click here Powered by CMEfy - a seamless way for busy clinician learners to discover Internet Point-of-Care Learning opportunities that reward CME credits & more.

In this episode, we discuss how medical training and practice impacts physicians' health and what needs to change. Medicine is a wonderful profession, full of caring individuals who give generously to their patients but physicians when they are sick, rarely treat themselves as compassionately as they would treat their patients. The culture of medicine expects the practice of medicine for others to be placed above all other considerations, even more so when the issue is mental or emotional health. Often physicians are inhibited from taking needed care of themselves, working while they themselves are sick and fearful that their livelihood will be snatched away. Today's guest, Dr. Elizabeth Treynor, is on a mission to normalize discussions about physicians' own mental health..
