How I came across Elizabeth is a little bit more unusual than most of the guests on this podcast. I run most mornings and I like to run on the Lakeshore here in Toronto. Elizabeth works as a crossing guard some mornings on Bathurst and Queen's Quay. I got stuck waiting on a red light there a few times and began chatting with Elizabeth, she recognised my Irish accent and we immediately hit it off. This began to happen a bit more regularly and as I got to know her better, I knew she would be a great guest to share her story of being Irish in Toronto. I want to thank Elizabeth for being so honest. Her story is a unique one filled with happiness and of course, moments of sadness. As you heard in the introduction, coming to Toronto provided Elizabeth with a sense of freedom that was taken from her in Ireland and in England. I think you will really enjoy the conversation. I would still encourage people to download the episodes and to share them with friends and family. Downloads are the easiest indicator for me to gauge how many people I am reaching with these conversations so I would really appreciate it.

Dr. Elizabeth Hughes is a dermatologist, inventor, writer, and coach with an outside-the-box approach to medicine and being a physician. After graduating from medical school at the University of Virginia, she completed an internship at the University of Pennsylvania and a dermatology residency at Stanford, where she was also a chief resident. As impressive as all these sounds, for most of her life, including throughout medical training, Dr. Hughes hid a secret: she was married to a man with an antisocial personality disorder. This relationship nearly drove her to suicide. Rather than feeling victimized, Dr. Hughes now views this relationship — and, more importantly, leaving the relationship — as the most formative experience in her life. By fully moving past that chapter of her life, she reclaimed energy and creativity, which she thought was lost. She embarked on an entrepreneurial path: founding a skincare company, joining a dermatology start-up, and authoring widely read KevinMD articles. Are you ready to redefine your relationship with your career? In this insightful episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Elizabeth Hughes, a dermatologist, coach, speaker, and creator of her own skincare line. We delved into the fascinating topic of physicians' relationship with their career, specifically exploring the parallels between our professional lives (Medicine, the job) and dysfunctional romantic relationships often seen in movies. Dr. Hughes reveals her personal journey of how she transformed her life and career to create meaningful change. She also shares her wisdom on recognizing when it's time to make a change, stepping out of the whirlwind, and setting boundaries to protect yourself from toxic relationships. “Staying in that bad relationship was not doing the right thing for my children. And so for medicine, it was staying in medicine as I was practicing was actually not doing the right thing for my patients. It was time for me to make a change. That became my driving force.” - Dr. Elizabeth Hughes “So that's why burnout is inevitable for an employee physician. There will come a time where you say, I can't take it anymore. And that's when burnout puts you on a path with more purpose. Just like the day you realize, I can't go on in this relationship anymore." - Dr. Dike Drummond Episode highlights: Realizing the power of choice and the possibility of making a difference Five signs you're in a toxic personal life & career relationship: An abuser never admits to being wrong. The abuser never actually trusts you. An abuser does whatever he wants and expects you to roll with the punches. An abuser expects you the the victim to support all of his freeloader friends. Abusers make their victims feel wholly dependent on them. Today's show discusses the telltale signs of a toxic relationship between physicians and their job, with guest Elizabeth Hughes, a dermatologist. In this episode, we delve into the similarity between an emotionally manipulative marriage and a career that starts with passion and purpose but morphs into a job that feels like a trap. Elizabeth shares her experience of being in a psychologically and emotionally manipulative marriage for over twenty years and draws parallels between her ex's behavior and the behavior of Medicine The Job. She points out the telltale signs of a toxic relationship, such as a lack of trust, unrealistic expectations, and making physicians feel unworthy or unvalued. Through her own experience, Elizabeth offers tough love to physicians who may be feeling trapped in their jobs, encouraging them to break free from abusive behavior and rediscover the passion and purpose that initially drew them to medicine. So tune in to this eye-opening episode, where we discuss the importance of recognizing toxic relationships with our careers and reclaiming our sense of self-worth. As doctors we spend our lives solving problems. But are we really solving them? Or are we masking them? Dr. Elizabeth Hughes is a dermatologist who has told more people than she can count that there was nothing they could do about their dandruff. But was that true? While taking a sabbatical from practice she finally got to explore that question more fully. Why is it that we can't treat dandruff at its source? We have all these serums and shampoos that are designed to deal with the flakes, but what about the cause. After years of research, development, and sourcing, she now has a product that does just that. Listen as she shares everything that has gone into making this product come to life. Everything from the trial and error of finding the right partners in the business, to learning how to build and grow a business rather than a practice. Dr. Elizabeth is a brilliant dermatologist but I'm thinking that her role as an inventor will be her best one yet. You won't want to miss out on this episode if you've been asking yourself similar questions. Why can't we fix it? “Physicians really are unbelievably creative and we just short change ourselves.” Dr. Elizabeth Hughes In this episode: [01:52] Welcome back to the show, Dr. Elizabeth Hughes! [03:32] Who she is, what she does and what led her to creating her own product. [07:23] She created a product to protect the skin barrier of your scalp. [09:28] Listen as she discusses the journey to product development. [11:29] Why she stopped product development for about 18 months. [13:15] Her mistake was not finding the right people with the right vision. [16:53] What it took to get her product through FDA Regulation. [20:38] She used novel ingredients that weren't on the FDA approved list. [24:02] How her product is doing since hitting the market in January 2022. Dr. Elizabeth Hughes is a Stanford-trained physician with more than 25 years of clinical experience. For most of her career she believed that conventional medicine was the only effective method of treating illness and injury. Her perspective was radically changed after a patient was cured of a chronic, “incurable” condition with a simple change in belief. She came to realize that the conventional medical approach is fundamentally flawed. Instead of healing and curing, the current paradigm has produced millions of people labeled as chronically ill, forever dependent on medication, cared for by a generation of physicians who are frustrated, burned out, and suffering with their own stress-related illnesses. She vowed to find a better solution. Her quest led her to study non-western systems of health and healing, placebo research, and the emerging sciences of epigenetics and psychoneuroimmunology. In the process she became a registered yoga teacher, a health coach, a PQ (Positive Intelligence) coach, and a practitioner of transformational archetypal work as well as several energy medicine modalities. By blending her scientific training with principles of self-healing, Dr. Hughes guides her clients — both physicians and the general public — to create their own sustainable path to health, wellbeing, and professional satisfaction. In addition to her coaching and mentorship practice, Dr. Hughes is the inventor and founder of Beyond Dermatologics, a breakthrough line of steroid-free, science-based skin care products designed to treat common skin conditions without the harmful side effects of topical steroids, as well as being the medical columnist for Modern Warrior magazine. -- www.elizabethhughesmd.com https://linktr.ee/elizabethhughesmd 206-225-4731 To claim CME Click here Powered by CMEfy - a seamless way for busy clinician learners to discover Internet Point-of-Care Learning opportunities that reward CME credits & more.

A sabbatical is possible for you, even if you're a single mom. In the last Burntout to Badass Masterclass session we did, one of the attendees said it wasn't possible for her to take a sabbatical. She's a single mom and there's no way without another income she could make it happen. Did I even know anyone who'd done it? I do. I do indeed! Dr. Elizabeth Hughes was once an overworked, underappreciated dermatologist who was suffering burnout from all sides. She was in a toxic marriage, working in a toxic practice, and trying to find her way out. After she and her ex-husband got divorced she knew she had to make a change, but she was scared. All the what-ifs started playing through her mind and it took her practice administrators telling her that she needed to take on even more clients that finally did it. She wrote her Declaration of Independence and has been on a journey to find herself and her place in the world ever since. Her story is AMAZING. She did the single mom sabbatical without any large amount of money in the bank, living in one of the highest cost of living states, and without any sort of plan. Learn how! “One of the biggest tragedies that I think about medical training is that it makes doctors believe that they are good for nothing but medicine.” Dr. Elizabeth Hughes In this episode: [01:53] Welcome to the show, Dr. Elizabeth Hughes! [02:10] She shares what she's doing these days. [04:47] She discusses her background and the journey to stepping away from clinical medicine. [09:58] Listen as Dr. Hughes talks about the moment she said no more. [13:15] She speaks about networking and about a lucrative contract that came her way. [16:53] She took a year off, got a yoga certification, and got her coaching certification. [18:19] Dr. Hughes talks about the healing that occurred during her year-long pause. [20:53] She shares some advice for single moms who think they can't take time off. [21:47] Find out how to connect with Dr. Hughes. [22:58] Thank you for being on the show! "We physicians must come to terms with the trauma caused by the financial insecurity built into our training and the ripple effect it has even after we finish training, both as a way to repair ourselves individually and as a way to assure that our profession survives. The cost of medical education is high, but the cost of the financial lessons learned in the course of obtaining that education is even higher. It may be a price too high for future doctors to bear." She did advanced medical training at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University. After completing her residency she joined the Stanford faculty, where she taught for eight years. She has also practiced at several large medical groups as well as being in private practice. As she progressed through her career, Elizabeth became frustrated that the promises of medical science didn't translate into cures for most common diseases and that patients still struggled with illness despite receiving state-of-the-art medical care. After witnessing the nearly spontaneous resolution of an “incurable” disease, Elizabeth became obsessed with finding out why mainstream medicine fails so many people.Elizabeth combines her medical background with wide-ranging studies of alternative modalities of health and healing into a one-of-a-kind system designed to help people who feel like their lives have been hijacked by exhaustion and brain fog reclaim their energy and mental clarity.Elizabeth is a board-certified dermatologist, a registered yoga teacher (RYT-200), an advanced PSYCH-K® facilitator, and a Whole Health Medicine Institute certified provider. Today, we are going to talk about self-healing. As you all know, in today's world and ways of medications, a lot of people are being programmed that we need to take this and that. That we need to maintain this kind of medication to heal our bodies. There are so many products and commercials right now which lead us to forget that our body does heal on its own. That the human body has a natural ability to repair itself. What we talked about: 7:33 Self-healing is the process of your body putting yourself back together. And there are things that we do that we don't realized is important to our self-healing. 9:46 All our body parts do self-healing even our solid organs that you think aren't changeable like your bones, liver even your brains they move and regenerate all the time 10:27 The reason why the body gets sick while it's healing itself 18:00 Drugs are very very big business- billions and dollars in each individual's medication 22:44 Surgery and medication goes hand-in-hand to your self-healing. You don't have to give-up medicines, you don't have to give up your doctors, but you will be much healthier and everything you do will work better if you start working on your own self-healing 23:28 The practice of self-healing 27:54 Being bored is very important to your self-healing 32:18 There's a big misconception where when doctor talks about self-healing, somehow, the patients expect the doctor to do the self-healing for them. 34:15 Find a way to bring the feeling of feeling healthy back to being something that you do regularly to start the journey of your own self-healing Visit thelegaldrugdealer.com for the show notes.

Why is this episode important on a show about toxic relationships? Because your doctor--and other healers--need to be empathetic, aware, interested, listening, and compassionate. Some are wonderful. Others, not so much. You need to find one that cares about all of you, not just the numbers, graphs, and medications. In your toxic relationship, have you ever been seriously ill or injured? What kind of care did you get at home? That's a big moment, isn't it, when you realize that the toxic person can't be bothered with you, or take you seriously? How does your doctor behave? Dr. Hassan Tetteh had early personal experiences with trauma, and the impact on him directed his life's work. A Near Death Experience changed so much for him. Dedicated to The Art of Human Care™ (also the name of his book), Dr. Tetteh helps you see what to look for in a doctor, too. In a toxic relationships--past or present, there is often trauma from emotional abuse. You NEED your doctor to see, know, and believe what is happening to you. Emotional abuse takes a toll on your body as I discussed with Dr. Elizabeth Hughes in episode 189. Dr. Tetteh explains why you need to truly feel cared for when you need medical attention. Although he offers his acronym, L.E.A.R.N, for healers, it's a very good approach for all of us in our relationships. Enjoy this...even if it sounds a little off our usual topics. It's valuable! HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:How an earlier life experiences change Dr. Tetteh's understanding of careWhy it often seems that doctors are more interested in time than patientsHear his Human Care TheoryWhat's up with toxic people's response when you're ill Why you need to find an empathetic, compassionate doctor OK, so I hope you now recognize why I invited Dr. Tetteh to Save Your Sanity. Don't be re-wounded by a doctor who doesn't really see or hear you. Your doctor needs to be a safe place to go, whether that is your medical doctor, alternative healthy professional, or therapist. You may think that you're experiencing the natural wear and tear on your health. But, if you're in a toxic relationship, it is making things so much worse! Learn about the most likely ways your body and its immune system can respond to toxic relationships with narcissistic people, or antisocial people. Talk about wear and tear!!! Two things that cause physical health issues (among many) start with emotional abuse: stress and isolation. Both of those are present in most relationships with Hijackals, right? Constant stress and the pressure to not talk about difficulties with others outside the relationship. Very common. In this episode, I share some research findings from Dr. Gabor Mate that relate to this where he said, "The very same brain centers that interpret and feel physical pain also become activates during experiences of emotional rejection." Sound familiar? This can be terribly enhanced if, perchance, you had a narcissistic mother--a Hijackal mother--and then went on to be in a relationship with another Hijackal. It takes such a toll on you! Dr. Hughes has a wonderfully refreshing approach to medicine as she tempers Western medicine with Eastern thought and practices. Enjoy her insights! HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:What is the "rodent brain" and how it affects usWhat happens in your body when it is on alert too long due to the stress of a toxic relationshipWhat causes "fuzzy brain"How stress affects the body from production of different hormonesHow trauma--old or current--affects the body, emotional trauma, physical trauma, sexual trauma, abandonment How the immune system distinguishes what is toxic and what is safeHow this all relates to relationships with difficult people, toxic people, narcissists, psychopaths, sociopaths, borderlines I hope you find connections within yourself to what in your relationships might be causing health issues. Often, until you realize that, you can have physical symptoms that seemingly cannot be explained. This episode might help with that. Be good to yourself.Rhoberta GUEST: ELIZABETH HUGHES, MDDr. Hughes is a dermatologist and former faculty member at Stanford University, where she taught dozens of physicians, including many nationally-recognized leaders in the field of dermatology.Nearly twenty years after graduating from medical school, Dr. Hughes witnessed the rapid resolution of a patient’s chronic illness without any medical intervention. Dr. Hughes is a Stanford trained physician who talks about what stress can do to the body and how it affects health. She speaks about her own experience with stress related illness and why more doctors are not aware of this. She says that changing how you think can affect body functions and why diet and exercise are not enough to be healthy.Free gift: PDF of the 5 hidden causes of stress you can eliminate right away at https://thestressantidote.com/W: https://elizabethhughesmd.com/T: https://twitter.com/ehughesmdF: https://www.facebook.com/elizabethhughesmd
Feeling stressed out? Wondering what your doctor would say? Surprisingly, doctors get very little training on stress, both in how it affects the body and how to deal with it. Got an injury? Great. The doctor has you covered. Got an infection? The doctor has you covered. But stressed out? Not so much. That was the experience of my guest, Elizabeth Hughes, MD. A practicing physician, Elizabeth was reading in the back of a medical journal about adrenal fatigue. She noticed that most of her patients suffered from the same symptoms. And she realized that the culprit was stress. Or more accurately, the inability for her patients to successfully deal with stress. No surpise, Elizabeth realized, given how even her medical school training had failed to offer solutions. That led Elizabeth to seek ways to help. She picked up a number of certifications in the process. But more importantly, she discovered an important antidote to stress that is simple and powerful. Since stress is implicated in many chronic illnesses and adversely affects life satisfaction, it is important for each of us to find that antidote to stress. Listen in to this episode to learn how. GUEST: ELIZABETH HUGHES, MDDr. Hughes is a dermatologist and former faculty member at Stanford University, where she taught dozens of physicians, including many nationally-recognized leaders in the field of dermatology. Nearly twenty years after graduating from medical school, Dr. Hughes witnessed the rapid resolution of a patient’s chronic illness without any medical intervention. This event caused Dr. Hughes to question everything she had been taught about health and illness, and to look for better answers for “incurable” conditions. Her quest lead her to investigate ancient spiritual traditions, non-western systems of health and healing, placebo research, and the emerging sciences of epigenetics and psychoneuroimmunology. In the process, she became a registered yoga teacher, a certified health coach, and a practitioner of several energy medicine modalities. Dr. Hughes has developed a revolutionary approach to health based on establishing trust in the human body. M. Elizabeth Hughes is a freelance film producer who grew up in south Georgia. After graduating from magna cum laude from Wesleyan College, she moved to Orange County and earned her M.F.A. in Film and Television Producing from Chapman University. Since then, she has made her career producing a wide variety of films and series with various filmmakers and financiers. She co-produced one of my favorite all time movies, SHORT TERM 12. She’s produced many studio features such as GIRLFRIEND’S DAY written by and starring Bob Odenkirk and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY starring Ben Schwartz and Noël Wells. Most recently, she produced the Amazon docuseries, LORENA, which reframes the infamous story surrounding Lorena Bobbit. During our chat, we take an unfiltered look into the challenges of working in physical production, the magic of making SHORT TERM 12, and reflect on the choices that got her to where she is today.
