For years, Alex felt lost, never understanding why they didn't fit in and at times struggled with suicidal ideation and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for their mental health. She also shares how a phrase she heard in AA literally saved her life and how after getting sober that is where their healing actually began. Alex was diagnosed with autism later in life, which finally gave them clarity to the challenges they faced—particularly in relationships and challenges and sensation overwhelm in daily life. Growing up, their caretakers also struggled with mental health issues, and also lacked proper diagnosis which only deepened their urge to break the cycle.Now, with their diagnosis as a turning point, the guest is thriving—married to someone else who shares a similar diagnosis and a person that truly understands them. I thought this would be a fitting launch today considering it is 7 years off of alcohol on this day and 9 years off of drugs and substances a month ago for me :).  Thank you for listening to my podcast and being advocates for mental health and addiction recovery.  My story is a one that starts with a creative, lost, confused, adoptee that deals with depression, anxiety, drug addiction and trauma. I found my pathway to recovery and started making real progress once I put the alcohol down, stripped myself of substances and self medicating and found true self love, hope and gratitude. As you know our stories told by us are personal, and only emphasize our own experiences. Through self work in recovery on mind, body, spirit connection I found my diagnosis I described in this episode as void and found a life living substance, panic attacks, and medication free.
