177. Parenting Through Pediatric Cancer: Laura Lang-Ree's Story of Strength and Hope

Warriors Unmasked

In this deeply moving episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss welcomes Laura DeKraker Lang-Ree, a mother, author, and fierce advocate for families navigating pediatric cancer. Laura shares her heart-wrenching yet empowering journey through her daughter Cecilia's leukemia diagnosis—a journey that sparked her mission to create resources and support for parents facing the unimaginable. Laura opens up about the shock and fear that consumed her when her three-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. She recalls the early days of scouring the internet for guidance, only to find a lack of practical, emotional, and logistical resources for parents walking this difficult path. Determined to change that, Laura took her own experiences and turned them into something meaningful: her book, The Cancer Parent's Handbook: What Your Oncologist Doesn't Have Time to Tell You. Throughout this episode, Laura and Chuck discuss the emotional rollercoaster of being a cancer parent, the often-overlooked mental health challenges that come with the diagnosis, and the importance of building a strong support system. Laura's insights are both practical and heartfelt, offering listeners a candid look into what it's like to parent through a cancer diagnosis while continuing to nurture the rest of the family. Key Takeaways from Laura's Story: The Importance of Advocacy: Laura stresses how crucial it is for parents to become informed advocates for their children, even when the medical world feels overwhelming. Managing Emotions Amidst the Chaos: She shares strategies that helped her manage fear, grief, and anxiety during her daughter's treatments, including mindfulness, journaling, and leaning into her faith. The Power of a Support System: Laura talks about how she learned to accept help from others and how critical it was for her family's well-being. Turning Pain Into Purpose What started as a personal mission to survive the emotional toll of her daughter's diagnosis turned into a broader mission to help others. Laura created She Is You, an online community where parents can find support, share their stories, and access the tools they need to cope with pediatric cancer. Her book is packed with real-world advice, from handling medical jargon to advocating for your child's needs. Laura also reflects on the incredible strength she discovered within herself and within the pediatric cancer community. Her message is clear: no parent should walk this journey alone. Through her work, she hopes to ease the burden for others by providing the guidance she wished she had during those first terrifying days. Faith, Resilience, and Hope At the core of Laura's journey is her unwavering faith. She credits her relationship with God for giving her the strength to persevere through the darkest moments. Her story serves as a reminder that even in the face of unimaginable hardship, hope and healing are possible. This season on the podcast, co-hosts Liz and Karla will be sharing mini episodes each Monday to highlight important topics for a healing journey. These Factors In Action episodes will share insightful ways that you can bring the healing factors into your life. This Week - Empowerment with a New Diagnosis Start from an Empowered Place. First, take a deep breath. Determine if you are in an emotional emergency or a physical emergency. Many cancers have been growing for some time and therefore are not a physical emergency. Most of us have time to research, get second opinions, and make informed decisions. Tell your doctor you do not want to hear the “prognosis” or the statistics. You are not a number and should insist from the start on being treated like an individual not as a number or diagnosis. The statistics and prognosis will not help you and may only upset you more. No one, not even the smartest doctor, can possibly know YOUR outcome. There are so many stories of people who have outlived the prognosis! You can be one of them! _____ To learn more about Liz and Karla's private practice, The Health Navigators, A Virtual Cancer Wellness Community, visit www.HealthNavs.com   Click here, to learn more about health coaching and our Overcome the Odds Coaching Program and schedule your free Discovery Call.   Follow the Health Navigators on Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube    ______ Follow Radical Remission on Social Media: Facebook , Instagram, YouTube

For one thing, people often have no prior knowledge of their condition before they're diagnosed. In this episode, I talk to my friend Victoria Garner about her experience of being diagnosed with Chikungunya Virus. This is a viral disease that is spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. The most common symptoms of infection are fever and joint pain. But as you'll hear, Victoria also experienced brain fog and neurological issues, which will be all too recognizable to people with MS. And her initial symptoms were brushed off as being stress-related. Sound familiar?Victoria talks about when she first realized that something was wrong, her struggle to get a diagnosis, and the anger she felt at having to adapt to her new reality. Welcome back to Hope for Parents with Struggling Teens. Today we're joined once again by Brittany Johns, LMFT to talk about some recent trends in the mental health world and a few of the dynamics we've been seeing recently in many families of struggling teens. We address some new diagnostic terms that are growing in popularity, as well as a couple of phrases that aren't actually real diagnoses at all.First, we address the term “school avoidant.” Many of our listeners will draw different conclusions on how helpful this phrase is or isn't. I talk about the potential downside of labeling common behaviors that fall within the middle of the bell curve of common teen issues as disorders or terms that sound like diagnoses. I share a little bit about my own personal experience with ADHD, and how it's still important to encourage teens to lean into personal responsibility as they learn how to work hard in school and develop tools for success, wherever they find themselves on the list of learning challenges and possible cognitive deficits. Next, Brittany and I talk about the importance of walking alongside a teen when they experience failure, and how that looks very different than rescuing or protecting them from potential failures. We look at troubleshooting together with your child, helping them process failure as part of living, and reframing the adverse experience as a learning opportunity. Then, we discuss some common traps that parents tend to fall into when their teen is struggling. These include enabling, excusing, fudging on boundaries, and failing to grieve unmet expectations in order to accept the season they find their family in.We address video game use and addiction, and whether or not it's accurate or helpful to call the behavior self-medicating. Brittany explains the appeal of predictability in games versus the unknown outcomes of taking real-life risks. We talk about the modern medical landscape we find ourselves in, and how many health insurance companies' emphases on getting a diagnosis right away can pose challenges for therapists. I also explain the possibility of incorrect diagnoses being made to move through a system lacking nuance for less common cases. I hope today's episode encourages you to think about new ways you can walk alongside your teen through the normal failures of life, and live free from the common traps of over-diagnoses, excuses, and unnecessary complications in the healing process of your family.

For some, getting a new diagnosis causes a feeling of relief to wash over them.  "I'm so happy it's this and not that!" or "thank goodness they finally found something!" But, often a new diagnosis isn't something we were hoping for. It can be hard to figure out how to deal with a new diagnosis. It might be IBS, migraine, or fibromyalgia. Or maybe you just got diagnosed with something like MS or cancer.  For someone who's always been healthy, it can be a shock. There are no rules, and there is no "normal" way of feeling. Everyone is a little different, even when they have the same diagnosis.   How to deal with a new diagnosis in 7 steps. Take the time you need to take it in. It's ok to focus on yourself for a few days, or weeks. Do your research and find out what to expect, but don't waste hours a day googling your diagnosis. You'll learn more as time goes on, and you might find misinformation out there. Locate the best doctor in your area who specializes in your diagnosis, or the system it affects.  Ask friends and family, or others with the disease. Ask your doctor who they would see, and get a referral there. Find a support group.  If you can get out, a medical center by you might have a specialized support group.  You can join a local group, or an online support group. WARNING - please don't give away personal information in an unsafe place.  ALSO, many "support" groups can bring you down by only discussing the negatives of what they're going through.  Find a place that is both honest and positive. Allow yourself to feel.  In the beginning you might have all kinds of feelings.  Be aware of those 5 stages of grief, and communicate how you feel with those around you so they can support you in the way you need it each day. Do not succumb to guilt.  This is not your fault. You didn't bring it on yourself.  You will still be able to have a satisfying life. You are still the parent your children were meant to have.  Feeling guilty doesn't make things any better, it just sucks your energy.  Find ways to enjoy your life.  You may start doing things differently, but you really can find joy no matter what's happening around you. There is so much more on the website! Check out HardyMom.com/new-diagnosis Thank you for joining me today!  Want more? On this episode of The Food Allergy Talk Podcast, Lisa Horne interviews her son, Stetson, a 14-year-old teen with food allergies. Stetson was anaphylactic to peanuts and shellfish since he was just a baby. In the past 6-8 months of this podcast interview Stetson began having symptoms that appeared at first glance to perhaps mimic potential Celiac, Crohn's and Colitis, IBS or other potential digestive issues. We had no idea that what was lurking behind these symptoms were added anaphylactic food allergies that appeared over a decade since his original diagnosis. What was even more confusing is that they were similar to food allergies by way of symptom, but also appeared to be other issues. Listen into our experience detailed in hindsight to see what we learned as we navigated this new terrain, as well as the feelings and emotions that can go along with a new food allergy diagnosis. While Stetson has had anaphylactic food allergies since he was a toddler, Stetson is much more than his food allergy. He is a video gamer, plays both piano and guitar, plays golf, and has recently taken up archery. There may be some things that Stetson cannot eat, but he hasn't let his food allergies top him from living and enjoying life. Even with this latest curve ball adding an additional 7 allergens: pecan, walnut, oat, garlic, sweet potato, watermelon and pear.Listen to hear about his experience and finding the the silver lining living a life with food allergy, and making the most out of it. Food Allergy Info Card referenced in this episode was made on www.vistaprint.com using the following verbiage (feel free to copy and use this verbiage), and then listed respective allergens:I have anaphylactic life-threatening food allergies to the following foods and should I come in contact with them would require emergency medical attention. When the gynecologist/oncologist told her that her best option was to have a total robotic hysterectomy and that the surgery was scheduled to be in 3 weeks, Antra hopped on the ‘urgency train.' She was a hot, blithering mess. When faced with a cancer diagnosis, that big ol' C-word sends people into complete fear mode, and not even this whiley veteran nurse was spared. Luckily, Antra had the where-with-all to gather her support team and ‘phone a friend.' Karen DiMarco reminded her that the urgency train was a ride she DEFO did not want to be on for peace and clarity of mind, and that the three weeks until the proposed surgery was plenty of time to research the particulars regarding the recommended ‘STEP 1' course of action (surgery). ‘STEP 2,'the possibility of chemotherapy and/or radiation, need-not yet bugger her brain until after STEP 1 was completed. During those 3 weeks, Antra was like the ‘dog with a bone' she is for her own clients, and tracked down all the information she could find to make an informed decision. Along the way she made curiosity her superpower, and learned how to be engaged in her care simply by asking questions (lots of questions). THIS IS ESSENTIAL: in spite of the fact that we are conditioned to NOT doctors - but if we don't engage and don't question, we cannot be fully informed of ALL of our options. We can't know what we don't know unless we look… and ask. Cancer treatment in the US is big business so there is no incentive for allopathic doctors to suggest possible treatments outside of the conventional care toolbox: cut it out (surgery), poison it (chemotherapy, burn it (radiation.) Finally, even when Antra was armed with all the information she needed to make an informed decision, her decision about what to do came from the place of her own inner knowing. The medical team is there to guide you, but not decide for you, and this clarity enabled Antra to take control of her own course of action, and ultimately make the right decisions for her own health and healing.
