This month’s hymn improvisations draw from the incredibly rich repertoire of African-American spirituals. While many of these songs were sadly birthed out of oppression, they hold deep emotional conviction for having a personal relationship with Jesus. The history of these songs also reminds us of the truths of freedom and equality for all, that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL [PEOPLE] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (Declaration of Independence). I don’t usually mix politics and social issues with my music but considering recent events it’s impossible to ignore. This week’s episode is in response to the growing and rampant injustice of racial inequality. It just seems that so many issues are brought about because people (especially those in power) don’t take a moment to take a breath and think of the potential outcomes of their actions. Winter can be bleak for many of us. I’m the first to admit it’s not my favorite time of year. But Christina Rossetti’s poem reminds us that even during the coldest and darkest times in our lives, there is hope—hope in a God who promises “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18). British playwright and poet William Congreve wrote the often misquoted line, “Music hath charms to sooth the savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.” At the core of this sentence is a truth that music has a healing and restorative power like no other. Life isn’t always what we hope for. I recently finished working on a new theatrical adaptation of The Book of Esther, which is full of unexpected twists and turns. Yet it shows how God continues to use and bless His people for His good purpose even when things don't go as expected. While this life may not be what you hoped for right now, there is a new life waiting . . . something MORE than you could ever hope for; “more than you could ask or imagine.” Be reminded that in Christ, “you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. We all make plans. It’s inevitable. We’ve been given minds that can extrapolate future possibilities based on knowledge, experience and the heart (or gut). This morning my wife asked me what I thought heaven looks like. I didn’t know how to answer her. Of course there is all the imagery found in scripture of a beautiful place beyond description, where God will “wipe away every tear and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” There are also scriptures that point to a day when God will make a “new heaven AND a new earth”. So what do you imagine heaven to be like? Whatever our vision may be, one thing is certain: “As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is My (God’s) love for YOU.” That is a hope and a truth we can cling to now and forever. We all need assurance. It’s a key ingredient to our humanity. We have been created with the capacity to love deeply, to strive through the most difficult of circumstances, and to have faith in that which is unseen. Yet we have also been created with mind, heart and soul that need nurturing, nourishment and care. We need to be loved deeply, we need support when we go through the most difficult of circumstances, and we need assurance from a God who promises to strengthen our faith in Him even when it seems impossible.
