Send us a textMahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Kali Dayton. Kali Dayton is an ICU nurse practitioner and like Gandhi, MLK Jr., and Parks, Kali is peacefully protesting the way ICU patients are cared for. Similar to the civil rights advocates before her, Kali fights for the rights of ICU patients. She believes they have the right to limited sedation, early mobilization, open communication, and family participation. Kali was born as a baby nurse into an Awake and Walking ICU in which ventilated patients received little to no sedation, were out of bed walking while intubated, and communicating through whiteboards, all with the crucial support of their families. Then she began traveling to ICUs across the country and found her patients automatically sedated if intubated, enduring long periods of immobilization, and if they were lucky enough to avoid death in the ICU, they were discharged to suffer PTSD and face long periods of rehabilitation.Kali is a self-described ICU revolutionist and is dedicated to educating both clinicians and families through her podcasts, "Walking Home from the ICU" for clinicians, and "Walking You Through the ICU", which is directed toward patients and families. Through her consulting business, Dayton ICU Consulting, she travels the country visiting ICUs helping them to become awake and walking ICUs. The revolution has begun. In the five-minute snippet: did someone say free time? The 2024 annual report from the Commonwealth Fund describes in detail that Americans face greater barriers to accessing and affording healthcare than those in peer nations. Now, nurses are overcoming those barriers to access through a new, growing medium: podcasting. In our Power of Podcast series, we explore how nurses are taking their expertise to the airwaves to share evidence-based care solutions, offering patients and the public vital, practical, and trusted information while also providing healthcare colleagues tools to improve education and care delivery. Through podcasting, nurses are bridging gaps in education, care availability, and professional development, fostering better health outcomes and stronger communities. In the second episode of our three-part series, critical care nurse practitioner Kali Dayton DNP, AGACNP shares how her podcast Walking Home from the ICU is mission-critical to improving ICU care and preventing the physical and cognitive impacts of long-term sedation and immobility by following the ABCDEF Bundle and keeping ICU patients awake, communicative, mobile, and autonomous and their families engaged and participating in care. Walking Home from the ICU dives into research from experts, experiences of survivors, and evidence-based practices of critical care teams to ensure that research is accessible, applicable, and practical for ICU clinicians so patients can indeed walk home from the ICU and return fully to their lives! Just Passing Through Episode Two Subtitle: Is There Life After Death? We Are Just Passing Through Part Two We must rely on Jesus Christ to get us into the complete fulfillment of His glorious kingdom of love, holiness, godliness, perfection, and freedom. My deceased brother, Belmon once told me we must strive toward God (GOOD ORDERLY DIRECTION). Because only the Lord Jesus Christ can give us Spiritual and Eternal Protection. For in this life we are just passing through. Before many of my beloved loved ones died, they told me the same thing too. Oh Lord cleave and strengthen us all toward You. Because You are the only Eternal Reality that stands forever Divine and True. While, we are all just passing through. Join me tonight as I recount a strange and rather unnerving experience that I had just over a week ago, of feeling as if I were walking in the footsteps of Meursault, the main character of one of my favourite books, Albert Camus' The Outsider. Please note that this episode contains themes relating to death and cremation.Journal entry:25th July, Thursday“First light of iron and steel. A mist of rain On the back of A wind from the south.A raven calls from the Topmost branch of the tallest Of the convocational oaks.We both look west And share this morning light Of rain and southerly wind.”Episode Information:In this episode I read an extract from Albert Camus' (1942) The Outsider translated by Sandra Smith and published in 2012 by Penguin Classics. Cheryl Esposito welcomes Sonia Choquette, spiritual teacher, six-sensory consultant, transformational guide, & author of 19 best sellers on intuitive awakening & transformational capabilities. Our sixth sense, intuition, is our “first sense.” It is the conscious intelligence of our heart…many of us ignore its wisdom. We disregard our knowing in favor of the facts. Urgency addicted, we miss opportunities to create connections. In our busy-ness, is loneliness; a longing to live a meaningful purpose. We learn by doing, then by our un-doing. Sonia reached her un-doing: her brother died; 6 weeks later her father died; her marriage ended, her business unraveled. To regain spiritual footing she chose a pilgrimage, walking Camino de Santiago, 800km/500 miles over Pyrenees & across northern Spain. Walking Home: A Pilgrimage from Humbled to Healed is Sonia's 35-day transformational journey into her heart's knowing. Join Cheryl Esposito&Sonia Choquette to learn the way…into your own heart.
As a family, we gained a reputation for the way our 'short walks' often turned into marathon hikes which invariably meant staggering home long after dark (usually without a torch). In this week's episode I reminisce on the lessons learnt, their prescient significance, and living in a culture that does growing old and dying so astonishingly badly.Journal entry:24th February, Saturday.“Cloud cliffs, grey and climbing Early spring sunshine Catching the stonework traceries And Benedictine flint and brickwork. The hub of politicking and commerce Silenced by the wheel-turn of centuries. Now trees stand where monks walked And daffodils nod in silent prayer. An hour of gentle talk and laughter Among such emerald greens of spring. And crows bathe in the Stiffkey brook As the wayside flames with primrose, Crocus, and snowdrop.Later, vast flights of wild geese fly south Along the coastline.”Episode Information:This episode comprises largely of family recollections, but please note that it also touches on the themes on death and dying. July 16th: Helen Betty Osborne Born (1952) Most women have been taught to fear walking alone at night. No doubt a product of stories like the one we are telling today. On July 16th 1952 a young, bright, and driven young woman was born who, seeking to further her education, moved away from her community. A woman whose case may have sat at a standstill because of her sex and, more importantly, her race. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Helen_Betty_Osborne, http://www.ajic.mb.ca/volumell/chapter1.html, http://www.ajic.mb.ca/volumell/chapter3.html, https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/helen-betty-osborne-50-years-1.6242973, https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/helen-betty-osborne-the-cree-woman-whose-brutal-murder-helped-expose-racism-in-the-justice-system-1.5665028, https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/15-canadian-stories-helen-betty-osborne-a-murder-that-resonates-50-years-later

Welcome back for a special episode of Good Nurse Bad Nurse! We are excited to announce that we are uniting forces with a series of podcasters for a podcrawl with a focus on delirium. This week we are joined by Kali Dayton, nurse practitioner and host of Walking Home from the ICU podcast. We tackle the story of nurse Eyvette Hunter. When a request to sedate a distressed, elderly patient was denied, nurse Hunter allegedly took matters into her own hands and administered a sedative medication. Nurse Hunter is facing the legal consequences of her alleged actions. Nurse Kali takes the reigns to share our Good Nurse story regarding nurse Polly Bailey. Nurse Bailey has improved the quality of care and life for patients in the ICU by demonstrating that early activity is feasible and safe in respiratory failure patients. The word “home” means many different things that bring a wide range of feelings, depending on your experience. You may see that home is the keyword for today's episode and the conversation with my lovely guest. Join us for this conversation that is full of light and warmth. Genevieve Walker is a violinist and composer who grew up in a musical household in which the sound of tuning a violin became synonymous with home. She lived in the classical music world for many years before traveling the world as a young adult. She was influenced by different cultures and approaches to music and began weaving these influences into her playing. Having toured internationally as a violinist, Genevieve has seen the world through the perspective of the stage. Perhaps she is most known for her long-time accompaniment for Krishna Das, with whom she has recorded and performed extensively. Genevieve composed her first solo album, Walking Home, while pregnant with her first son. Two kids and some life later, she has completed her second solo album, Home Songs. This album is a shift in her orientation, drawing upon the sounds and melodies of everyday life to express a collective ode to the longing and cultivation of home. Home Songs is a musical exploration of finding home and the people we love. In addition to being a violinist, Genevieve is a certified yoga teacher and a licensed psychotherapist. She views her approach to these disciplines as a way to unwind deeper into ourselves and untie the home that exists within us all. In this conversation, we talk about what it is like to have a long-term relationship with an instrument and her journey to playing the violin. She discusses the idea of home and what it means to her, along with how motherhood has influenced her music, and she shares how she came to meet Krishna Das and ended up playing music with him. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
Ryan Leighton is our guest this week and, though not a thru-hiker, he has probably impacted more people with regard to long-distance hiking than many of our guests on the show. He produced a documentary movie–Walking Home–that followed the hike of a father and son duo, along with two other characters who intermittently entered the story. But Ryan has always been a thrill seeker, and he shares his fascinating story of climbing Katahdin in the winter, a negotiating Knife's Edge with a reluctant friend, and spending time working on a nineteenth century whaling ship. You'll really enjoy meeting him. As we said on the show, the documentary is free and available on YouTube, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4TWPbBlf70. It is so good and I hope that, if you haven't seen it, you give it a look. Our Mighty Blue Class of 2022 has been drastically reduced over the summer, and we lost another member this week. Dom Tammaro sustained a hike-ending injury that made him reluctantly quit his journey for the time being. He intends to get back on the trail next year. Our free-wheeling young member of the group, Dan Whitesides, or Trumpet, and his dog, FrankE, have had a fairly drama-free time–until this week, that is. Hear what's happened to Dan.
