In 2021, famed Irish author Sally Rooney declined to publish her book in Israel because there was no BDS-compliant publisher. At the time, she said she would be “pleased and proud” to have her books translated into Hebrew, as long as it was done in a way that respected the principles of the boycott. Last week, Rooney announced that she was publishing a Hebrew translation of her latest book, Intermezzo, with November Books and +972 Magazine. The publishers had been vetted by PACBI, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, and deemed BDS compliant. This means November Books does not operate in Israeli settlements, receives no state funding, and explicitly recognizes the Palestinian right of return. In The Guardian, Rooney said she “kept in touch with PACBI along the way to try to ensure that I was upholding both the letter and the spirit of the institutional boycott.”Immediately, there was backlash. Some Palestinian writers, including Mohammed El Kurd and Susan Abulhawa, questioned the decision to use this “loophole” in BDS guidelines to bring the book to Israeli audiences. Why now? And why this? Even if it adheres to the letter of the boycott, does it capture the spirit, as Rooney says? On this episode of On the Nose, Arielle Angel speaks with Ahmed Moor, a writer and fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace; Maya Rosen, assistant editor at Jewish Currents; and Muhammad Shehada, a writer from Gaza and a visiting fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, about this tempest in a teapot surrounding the Hebrew translation of Intermezzo. They discuss whether this action hit its strategic marks, and what the response says about the Palestine movement's relationship to both the Israeli left and the prospect of changing Israeli society. Thanks to Jesse Brenneman for editing and to Nathan Salsburg for the use of his song “VIII (All That Were Calculated Have Passed).”Media Mentioned and Further ReadingBDS Guidelines“On +972 Magazine, Sally Rooney, and the centering of Israelis in an anti-colonial movement,” Susan Abulhawa, MondoweissThe Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappé“Yuval Noah Harari on Donald Trump's Core Delusion,” The Ezra Klein ShowPerfect Victims by Mohammed El Kurd“We're publishing Sally Rooney in Hebrew, in line with BDS.

Chess. At first, the idea of thinking like a chess champion may sound like an impossible feat if we do not know how to play the game, but as winner of two U.S. Women's Chess Championships and the first woman to win the U.S. Junior Chess Open, Jennifer Shahade shares in her new book, it all comes down to thinking well. Or to put it more precisely, thinking sideways. In my conversation with Jennifer, who is also a two-time Global Poker Award winner and silver Olympic medalist, she will share what she means by her chosen title, and then we will dive into specific decision-making strategies that champion chess players like herself use and how they also translate into creating a life we love living. Be sure to tune in to the audio version of our conversation as we will talk about the power of embracing intermezzos, why presence is crucial to seeing and then seizing opportunity, why focusing on our strengths is far more valuable than zeroing in on our weaknesses, and many more worthwhile pieces of life advice as witnessed through the lens of the game of chess. I do hope you enjoy the episode as Jennifer was a great guest and shared freely. And her Petit Plaisir offers a new perspective on a word we may have unfairly defined negatively. Very impressive!

What the frak?!?
Studenten opgelet! EPISODE 126 - “THE WESTMORE DYNASTY: MAKE-UP TO THE STARS AND BEYOND” - 2/09/2026 Hollywood loves dynasties—acting families, directing families, producing families—but one of the most powerful dynasties in film history didn't appear on screen at all. And it's one of the rare family dynasties that began in silent films and continues working in film and TV to this very day: THE WESTMORE FAMILY. The Westmores were the architects of illusion and the sculptors of stardom. From the pioneering vision of GEORGE WESTMORE who laid the foundations of cinematic makeup, to the extraordinary careers of his six sons, this family transformed faces into movie stars and shifted the culture of how women thought of and accepted the use of makeup in every day life. Their techniques, philosophies, and innovations continue to influence how we see characters on screen today—often without even realizing it. Join us as we spend time with The Westmore Dynasty: Hollywood's ‘First Family' of makeup. A forty-year slow-motion disaster in higher education is reaching its climax – and Labour is left holding the bag. If young people decide a degree isn't worth the massive debt, where does that leave British cities that depend on free-spending undergraduate populations – and universities that are hooked on no-longer-welcome foreign students? Can academia expect much sympathy from graduate generations whose aspirations are held back by crushing loan repayments? And can Labour do anything about it? In a fascinating conversation Oxford Brookes history professor and education commentator Glen O'Hara walks Ros Taylor and Hannah Fearn through the unfolding mess. Participantes: Bernardo Norat e Danilo Gomes Trilha Sonora: Fantasias op. 116 - No. 2 Intermezzo. Andante - Johannes Brahms

Aktomis & Mungg - II Tea Time (Where The Sirens Meet For Tea) Aktomis =Jo Flüeler / Mungg = Moritz Widrig 2. Lucio Dalla - L'anno che verrà 3. Hélène Grimaud - Johannes Brahms – 7 Fantasien für Klavier, Op.17: Intermezzo in e-moll (Andante con grazia) 4. Alexandre Tharaud - Jean-Philippe Rameau: Nouvelles Suites, «Gavotte» / «1er Double de la Gavotte» / «2e double» 5. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Requiem: «Sequenz. Dies irae: Allegro assai» Concentus musicus Wien / Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Dirigent
Freund weg. Wohnung weg. Job weg. Last of All, Servant of All. God has always employed real live humans for the task of directing and caring for God's people. What kind of people are best suited for this work? Those who serve relentlessly, conscientiously, joyfully. We'll celebrate stories of church leaders who have sacrificed much for the sake of the “flock” they “shepherd.”To tell us your thoughts on this sermon, click through to the web posting and leave us a comment. ChessDojo's GM Jesse Kraai is always one of my favorite people to talk chess with, yet somehow it had been five years since his last visit to the pod. Jesse returned at a great time, having been both studying and competing actively, and recently achieving his goal of qualifying for the 2026 U.S. Senior Closed Championship. His recent over-the-board activity provided a springboard for us to discuss a wide range of topics, including: How he has learned to confront his fears in tough, “meat-grinder” weekend tournaments Why he believes weight training—and even certain health supplements—are important for older players, and may be the next frontier for professionals as well How the ChessDojo curriculum and philosophy have evolved in recent years I am also a big fan of Jesse's book reviews on the ChessDojo YouTube channel, so I couldn't let him go without sharing a few recommendations. We even closed the conversation by discussing Intermezzo, a recent novel by award-winning Irish writer Sally Rooney. I always admire Jesse's dedication to improvement, and it's a pleasure to hear his thoughtful perspectives on chess and beyond. Approximate timestamps of topics discussed are below. 0:02- Does Jesse ever find it hard to stay motivated to keep studying and reading chess books? 0:03- Reflections on Jesse's recent tournaments 0:05- What are the keys to GM Alex Fishbein's recent success? 0:09- What does Jesse do to work on his own chess? This week's Walk Talk Listen comes with a quick update. Due to my travels to South Africa for the G20 Interfaith Forum, the regular episode will be released on Friday morning instead of Wednesday. In this special intermezzo, I share my reflections from the forum in Cape Town, where over 400 participants gathered under the theme Ubuntu in Action – Focus on Vulnerable Communities. These impressions were first published on jliflc.com, and I hope you enjoy hearing them here as well. If you'd like to support the podcast, please share and like my posts on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Blue Sky—and let me know if you have ideas for future guests. Your feedback and encouragement help keep Walk Talk Listen growing.

This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower and Natalie Orpett and Lawfare Contributing Editor Michel Paradis to talk about the week's biggest national security news stories, including:“A Justice Delayed Still Has Justice on the Mind.” After weeks of waiting, New York state court judge Justice Juan Merchan has finally become the first judge to apply the Supreme Court's Trump v. United States immunity decision, holding that incoming President Donald Trump's convictions under New York state law may stand and did not unduly rely on conduct for which he is immune. How persuasive is his ruling? And what can it tell us about the future of both Donald Trump's criminal case and the Supreme Court's immunity holding?“A Break in the Case.” Tectonic shifts in Syrian politics over the past few weeks that has led, among other consequences, to the release of thousands of former prisoners, have brought back to the fore the case of Austin Tice, an American journalist who has been missing in Syria for more than a decade. Believed to have been held by the Assad regime before its collapse, some are concerned that he might have been injured or killed during Israeli airstrikes over the past several weeks. What does Tice's case tell us about the challenges of wrongful detention cases like his? And what should we make of allegations that the Biden administration is not doing enough to bring him back?“Gym, Tan, Low-flying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.” The state of New Jersey has a new signature activity, as Americans and politicians of all stripes have been voicing concern over reports of mysterious drones of unknown origins operating in the state's skies. What might explain this phenomenon? And what should we make of the reactions around it? For object lessons, Anna recommended “Intermezzo,” by Sally Rooney as a read over the holiday. Natalie Orpett endorsed Washington, D.C.'s Eastern Market as a worthwhile visit for holiday shopping, and Scott doubled down with another local recommendation of Middleburg, VA, as a holiday wonderland not to be missed. And Michel wrapped things up with a final endorsement of Weike Wang's dryly comedic book “Rental House,” for those needing to commiserate over managing family relations over the holiday. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
