On Season 8, Episode 2 of the Race To Speak Up Podcast, Brian Mhando, a Regis High School (NY) senior, founded his school's Black Student Union in the wake of America's racial reckoning in the summer of 2020. While engaging in racial dialogue within the club, Regis' students and alumni attempted to raise awareness and create intergenerational dialogue by detailing their racial experiences on an Instagram page titled @blackatregis. Brian also created a debate curriculum for young kids via the REACH program, a year-round enrichment program that helps students of color and lower-income families gain admission to private schools. On Season 7, Episode 5 of the Race To Speak Up Podcast, Teresa Valley started Girls Giving Back in 2009 with her 9 year old daughter, Taylor with the mission of bringing friends and youth together to do community outreach for social services in need of urgent help. Local shelters were unable to maintain their facilities and provide the most basic needs. Teresa not only wanted to provide the basic necessities such as kitchen utensils, toiletries, and linens to local shelters, she wanted to create an uplifting environment that fosters hope. On Season 7, Episode 2 of the Race To Speak Up Podcast, James Gibson was 23 years old when he was forced to confess to a double homicide he did not commit. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. James began to study law while imprisoned and embarked on a mission to prove his innocence. After nearly 30 years of imprisonment, an appellate court vacated his conviction in 2019 and gave him a certificate of innocence. James attributes his mother as the source of his strength and resilience throughout his ordeal.
