Charles and Jon talk with mammalwatching power couple Venkat Sankar & Nicole Haseley from their base at Stanford University in California. Nicole and Venkat 'accidentally' turned 2024 into a Big California (Mammal) Year and ended up seeing a record breaking 150 species in the state by December 31.They talk about some of their big year's highs and lows as well as their favourite places in California to mammalwatch, and offer advice on how to identify small mammals in the field. Plus Nicole explains why browsing iNaturalist pictures in public can be a fast track to romance. For more information visit www.mammalwatching.com/podcastNotes: a Big Year - a concept well known among birders - sees participants look for as many different species as possible within a geographic boundary (in this case California). Venkat and Nicole's Big Year report is here (there are many more California reports here). Meanwhile Charles's epic 2019 Big Mammal Day report from Tanzania is well worth a read!A report from Charles's Royle Safaris' trip to Ghana will eventually arrive here. The ethical mammalwatching cartoons Jon mentioned are here.Cover art: Venkat & NicoleDr Charles Foley is a mammalwatcher and biologist who, together with his wife Lara, spent 30 years studying elephants in Tanzania. Scams come in many forms but receiving a freebie from a scammer doesn't make sense. If something shows up at your door that you didn't order, should you be worried? Brushing scams are becoming more common and while they may seem harmless at first they can be a gateway to fraud, identity theft and financial loss. Today we're diving into how these scams work, why they exist and the real dangers behind them. Our guest is Dr. Venkat Margapuri, an assistant professor of computer science at Villanova University. His research focuses on AI applications in agriculture and healthcare but he's also spent time studying online fraud and digital security. He's here to help us understand what's really going on when scammers send you something for free and most importantly what you should do about it. Show Notes: [00:44] Venkat is an assistant professor in the department of computer science at Villanova University. A lot of his research is focused on artificial intelligence, image processing, and security. [01:53] Brushing scams are where you receive products that you haven't ordered. It's a fraudulent e-commerce scheme. They try to get reviews or add additional sales for their product. [04:48] Venkat explains why it's not a good idea to scan those QR codes in products. You don't want to put your credentials into the website. [05:41] This is where brushing leads to phishing scams by getting people to enter information into a fake website. [06:20] The major risk of receiving these packages is identity theft. [09:30] Scam charges on Amazon can be used to verify stolen credit card credentials and overconfidence often leads to being scammed. [10:52] We discuss where these scammers find people's addresses. [13:05] A lot of scammers are really smart people who got into the wrong business. Key qualities include narcissism and psychopathy. [17:05] When you receive these packages just dispose of them. Don't scan the QR codes. [21:25] A scam where they send emails with the link to free Apple Gift Cards. Be careful about what you post on social media. [22:43] Assume unsolicited contact is a scam. [23:50] Don't share personal information. Look out for things that are out of the norm. [27:04] Venkat talks about advance fee scams. [28:14] Being careful about geographic perceptions.  [31:18] Be cautious if you are being rushed.  [32:18] Whenever you suspect something isn't right, err on the side of caution and don't do it. Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today's episode is with a founder who is building mission-critical software for private equity firms.I sat down in Citywire's London studio with Venkat Subramaniam, the Co-Founder of DealsPlus, to discuss why he has built a digital solution to streamline, digitize, and automate the management of complex holding and capital structures for private equity firms.Historically, private equity firms have relied on humans and manual processes to manage and track cap tables, transactions, and entities. This process has required significant human intervention and has often been rife with errors, making deals harder to consummate and transactions. Venkat has taken his 15 years of experience advising private equity managers on cross-border transactions, most recently as an Associate Partner at EY UK, to build DealsPlus to create a single source of truth for capital structures for private equity firms. DealsPlus works with a number of industry-leading private equity firms and is backed by a private equity firm with $38B in AUM.Venkat and I had a fascinating conversation about the challenges private equity firms face with managing and tracking transactions and portfolio companies. We discussed:Why it's been so hard to create a cap table management solution for private equity. Why it's much harder to build software for private equity firms than venture capital firms. How private markets can move from the Excel Age to the Digital Age.How to build software that provides a single source of truth. The atomic unit of value in private markets.Building an end-to-end platform versus building a point solution. What's next in post-investment ops tech innovation? Thanks Venkat for coming on the show to share your thoughts and wisdom on private markets tech.A word from AGM podcast sponsor, Ultimus Fund SolutionsThis episode of Alt Goes Mainstream is brought to you by Ultimus Fund Solutions, a leading full-service fund administrator for asset managers in private and public markets. On July 18th, Los Angeles Review of Books and The Berggruen Institute hosted a panel discussion titled "Writing Climate Futures," featuring David Wallace-Wells, Jenny Offill, Bharat Venkat, and Jonathan Blake. As our planet faces a climate crisis, questions about the role and efficacy of environmental writing assume greater urgency by the day. Through education, envisioning fictitious new worlds, and pushing forward the public discourse, writing holds the power to move the conversation we have around the future of our planet. LARB and The Berggruen Institute convened exciting voices in the climate movement from across genres to discuss how writing can enact change. David Wallace-Wells is the author of The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming (Penguin Random House, 2019), which argues that the state of the world, environmentally speaking, is “worse, much worse, than you think.” He is a weekly columnist and staff writer for the New York Times, deputy editor of New York Magazine, and he was previously the deputy editor of The Paris Review. He writes frequently about climate and the near future of science and technology. Jenny Offill is the author of three novels, Last Things, Dept. of Speculation, and most recently, Weather, which was shortlisted for the Women's Fiction Prize and the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is also the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship. She teaches at Bard College and lives in upstate New York. Dr. Bharat Jayram Venkat is an Associate Professor at UCLA with a joint appointment spanning the Institute for Society & Genetics, the Department of History, and the Department of Anthropology. His forthcoming title—tentatively titled Swelter: A History of Our Bodies in a Warming World— is about thermal inequality, the history of heat, and the fate of our bodies in a swiftly warming world riven by inequality. Dr. Venkat is the founding director of the UCLA Heat Lab, which investigates thermal inequality from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, ranging from biology and history to anthropology and urban planning. Jonathan Blake directs the Planetary Program at the Berggruen Institute. He is the coauthor, with Nils Gilman, of Children of a Modest Star: Planetary Thinking for an Age of Crises and author of Contentious Rituals: Parading the Nation in Northern Ireland.

2023 marked the hottest year recorded in human history, with predictions indicating a worsening global trend. In early June 2024, southern California experienced an extreme heat dome, with temperatures rising into the triple digits. Currently, heat alerts affect over 16 million people across California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. This escalating situation is not confined to the United States nor limited to the present; it is a manifestation of the intensifying impacts of climate change. Regions previously unacquainted with extreme heat are struggling to adapt, while areas accustomed to high temperatures are becoming increasingly uninhabitable.Heat is not merely a climate issue; it disproportionately affects individuals based on geographic location, race, and socioeconomic status, among other factors. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Bharat Venkat, Associate Professor at the Institute for Society & Genetics, the Department of History, and the Department of Anthropology at UCLA, to delve into the concept of thermal inequality. We explore how Dr. Venkat developed an interest in this subject and examine the origins of thermal inequality. Our discussion addresses the populations most impacted by heat inequality, with a particular focus on the Los Angeles area. We also touch upon critical topics such as urban design, socioeconomic disparities, and their intersection with heat. Finally, we contemplate the future of thermal inequality and potential solutions to mitigate its effects.

There is not much I enjoy more than sitting down with one of the most innovative thinkers in compliance; Carsten Tams, to find out what is on his mind regarding compliance. I recently had the opportunity to do so on the topic of making compliance training memorable. Over this short five-part series we will introduce the problem and challenges and then provide you with four game changing strategies you can employee for success in your compliance training. In this Episode 2, we discuss the concept of focusing on strengths within compliance and ethics training, as opposed to traditional deficit-based methods that highlight potential misconduct.  When we instruct people about prohibited behaviours, and how the company detects and discipline misconduct, employees often feel mistrusted and alienated. They tune out. This is deficit-based learning. It approaches the learner as a risk factor or potential delinquent. It aims to constrain unwanted behaviour. When employees can learn how to effectively shape and safeguard the ethical workplace they aspire to, they feel inspired and tune in. This is strength-based training. It approaches the learner as a valued partner in maintaining integrity. It assumes that people have capabilities, It aims at eliciting and strengthening the positive ethical faculties already present in most people. Tom and Carsten urge a shift in perspective so that learners are viewed as valued partners, drawing upon the principles of self-affirmation theory and strength-based approaches found in various sectors like healthcare and education. This approach aims to engage learners by acknowledging and enhancing their capabilities, ethical values, and problem-solving skills, thus fostering a sustainable ethical culture within organizations. Examples of successful applications of this approach, including innovative training methods and programs like UNESCO's card game and the 'Giving Voice to Values' curriculum, are highlighted. The conversation underscores the importance of designing training that not only prevents misconduct but also supports and develops employees' strengths, thereby enhancing overall company culture.  Highlights and Key Issues Discussed ·      The Problem with Deficit-Based Training Approaches ·      The Power of a Strength-Based Approach ·      Real-World Applications and Success Stories ·      Practical Steps Towards Strength-Based Training ·      Building a Sustainable Ethical Culture  Resources Books and Articles Saleebey, D. Recently, Barclays shed light on their financial standing in an earnings call that captured significant attention from investors and market analysts. Barclays' CEO, Coimbatore Sundararajan Venkatakrishnan (Venkat), provided insights into the bank's current performance and prospective forecasts. Venkat clarified, "it's worth reiterating what I said before is that this is not -- what I'm talking about is not a V-shaped recovery. It's a longer path to success in a number of areas. Certainly, for this quarter, the areas where we need to do better in terms of capturing the opportunity set is FICC and European rates. And you should expect to see improvement, not in months but certainly not quarters." This statement set the stage for a nuanced discussion about the bank's strategies and areas earmarked for improvement, as highlighted on the earnings call. The conversation also veered towards the U.S. Consumer Bank due to concerns raised about a significant year-on-year decline in fee revenues. During the earnings call, Anna Cross expanded on the impact of less aggressive collections actions and new legislation affecting late fee incomes, pointing to the challenges faced by the bank's U.S. operations. In the volatile world of global finance, Barclays has showcased resilience, navigating through uncertainty with prudent decision-making. As noted in the recent earnings call, the financial report underscores their commitment to operational excellence and strategic development across all divisions. The bank recorded a noteworthy return on tangible equity (RoTE) of 12.3% during Q1 2024, reflecting a robust business performance, as stated by Barclays.Barclays' effort to fortify both operational and financial performance has been exemplified by its investment bank, which secured a RoTE of 12% in the quarter. Accolades go to securitized products and equity derivatives for contributing to this success. The acquisition of Tesco Bank marks a long-term strategy to nurture unsecured lending growth in the UK, as acknowledged by Barclays during the earnings call.Progressive strategies to streamline operations include the divestment of non-strategic business units. Discussion during the earnings call brought attention to the planned disposal of Barclays' Italian mortgage portfolio and potential divestment from their German consumer business. As reflected in their strategy, Barclays aims to recalibrate risk-weighted assets, planning to invest an additional £30 billion into high-return UK businesses. This strategic move targets key divisions such as Barclays UK, the UK Corporate Bank, and Private Banking and Wealth Management.Barclays also aims to elevate returns within the US Consumer Bank to match group-wide targets, as highlighted in their earnings call. The recent strategic disposal of credit card receivables to Blackstone is a key part of this strategy to optimize capital management. In conclusion, Barclays' standing in the financial landscape is the result of methodical planning, strategic action, and a focus on financial and operational excellence, as outlined in their earnings call. Barclays' forward-looking strategies signal a realistic approach to sustained growth and success based on these ongoing improvements. As the bank navigates the complexities of global markets, it remains a reference point for robust performance and strategic innovation. It's vital to remember however, that all financial forecasts are subject to uncertainties and potential fluctuations in global markets. This is a public episode.
