This episode is about appreciating our past selves for getting us through, no matter how bumpy the ride. It's about recognizing the lessons learned and embracing our present, wiser selves. Ever wonder about the difference between a cook and a chef? It's not just about the kitchen, homie! While cooks excel at following recipes and executing tasks, chefs lead, create, and innovate. They do the cheffy things. This distinction goes beyond culinary skills; it's a mindset. A 'cook' mindset in daily life focuses on routine and consistency, while a 'chef' mindset embraces creativity, strategic planning, and adaptability. Think about it: are you just following the recipe of your life, or are you designing your own unique menu? (Gluten-free, if you must)By adopting a 'chef' mindset, you can transform your approach to personal growth. Challenge your routines, set ambitious goals, and embrace change. Shift from passively living to actively designing your life. Cultivate creativity, develop leadership skills, and seek innovative solutions to everyday challenges. Just like a chef elevates ingredients into something that is greater than the sum of the parts, you can elevate your life experiences by using the leadership skills of a chef. Are you ready to step into the role of the chef of your own life? Listen to my latest podcast episode to learn more about this! And of course, I offer coaching around this to help you step into your "inner chef"!To learn more about my Soulful Guidance sessions, you can see the info here on Instagram: LEARN MORE To book a live reading, go HERETo book a remote reading, go HERETo join the wicked email list, go HERETo find out more about working with me, go to the website to find out more about how life and creativity coaching can work for you.You can also find me on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook.Watch the episode on YouTube as well! Ever been nervous to cook for a chef? In this episode of Seared, I bust the myth of the food snob, revealing that most chefs actually love being cooked for, regardless of the cuisine. I share personal anecdotes and explores the difference between genuine food enthusiasm and judgmental food snobbery, highlighting how the latter often stems from deeper psychological needs related to status, insecurity, and belonging. The conversation delves into the social context of food, examining how it can be used to create hierarchies and exclude others, while also acknowledging the diverse meanings food holds for individuals – from simple sustenance to cherished childhood memories.Beyond the kitchen, the episode explores how snobbery manifests in other areas like music, fashion, and cars, connecting it to the human desire for social validation. I also offer practical tips for cultivating a more inclusive approach to food, emphasizing gratitude, curiosity, and focusing on the shared experience of a meal rather than passing judgment. This episode encourages you to embrace the diverse world of food, appreciate the emotional connections people have with their meals, and celebrate the joy of sharing a table together, no matter what's on the menu.To learn more about my Soulful Guidance sessions, you can see the info here on Instagram: LEARN MORE To book a live reading, go HERETo book a remote reading, go HERETo join the wicked email list, go HERETo find out more about working with me, go to the website to find out more about how life and creativity coaching can work for you.You can also find me on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook.Watch the episode on YouTube as well! In this latest podcast episode, yours truly dives into the vital role immigrants play in the culinary, hospitality, and tourism industries. I explore how the influx of diverse cultures enriches our own, challenging us to grow and learn through shared experiences and culinary innovation. These industries are currently facing a critical staffing shortage, with many businesses struggling to stay afloat due to a lack of domestic workers. Immigrants are essential to filling this gap, preventing closures and ensuring the continued growth and vibrancy of these sectors. Beyond economics, I share how working alongside people from different backgrounds fostered a deeper sense of community and connection, for me and my teams, and reminding me that we're humans just trying to human. This episode isn't about political debates about borders and immigration, but focus instead on the undeniable reality of our interconnected global society. I share how the blending of traditions and perspectives strengthens these industries and enriches our lives (and hey, the staff meals are BLESS, ya know?)Join us as we celebrate the contributions of immigrants to the culinary landscape, the hospitality sector, and the tourism industry, and discuss how their presence fosters a more inclusive and dynamic environment for everyone. To learn more about my Soulful Guidance sessions, you can see the info here on Instagram: LEARN MORE To book a live reading, go HERETo book a remote reading, go HERETo join the wicked email list, go HERETo find out more about working with me, go to the website to find out more about how life and creativity coaching can work for you.You can also find me on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook.Watch the episode on YouTube as well! In this episode, I dive deep into the fascinating world of cognitive biases, specifically the Halo and Horns Effects. I share a personal story about how the Halo Effect led me to make some poor hiring decisions in my kitchens. By unconsciously seeking out younger versions of myself, I set unrealistic expectations for my recruits, ultimately leading to their failure. We'll explore how the Halo Effect, which involves forming overly positive impressions based on a single trait or initial impression, can be a dangerous form of snap judgment. We'll also discuss the detrimental impact this bias can have on both the individual being judged and the one making the judgment.Furthermore, I'll delve into the equally harmful Horns Effect, where a single negative trait overshadows all other qualities. I also share my secret in approaching these situations when we recognize these biases within ourselves (hint: it involves grace, respect, and self-awareness!)This episode encourages you fine folks to become more mindful of your own perceptions and judgments, striving for more objective and equitable assessments of others. Oh boy. This was NOT the episode I had planned. The one I did plan fell apart quicker than a used tissue in a hurricane. In this SHORT episode (about 10 minutes), I talk about how I had to let go of a disastrous podcast recording and to just accept that it will NEVER see the light of day. So what do you do when something doesn't go to plan? You forge ahead. Not everything is going to go to plan. And you know what? This ended up being a heartfelt lesson about letting go of expectations. Of surprises. Of letting the Universe guide you. This is an unscripted, off-the-cuff recording and man, it almost brought me to tears. I hope that it resonates with you. I think it will. You know the tired trope - the fired up chef, tossing pots and pans everywhere, screaming at people, barking orders, having a mini-meltdown as everyone murmurs "yes chef", "no chef" under their breath. TV shows, movies, and books all glorify the Angry Chef, or at least poke fun at them. It's something that is very real, though, and anyone who has worked in the hospitality industry has either worked for one, or know someone who has. But that begs the question - WHY ARE THEY SO ANGRY? It's a good question, and one that I tackle on this episode. I share what would set ME off back in the day, and common reasons for why chefs may get unhinged. Of course, it's not acceptable, and things are changing - and I share reasons why the industry is turning away from the boring pissy chef. I also share ways that YOU can calm yourself down when you feel like you're about to burst at the seams with anger. These are things I did while on the line (and now in my office and out and about!) that truly WORK. And you know I mean business when I wear MY whites on the show! First time ever. Have you ever stood on the precipice of a decision, toes curled over the edge, ready to leap away from all you've worked towards? In this episode, I share my near-quits, along with the wisdom that kept me grounded. Have you ever been accused of being 'too nice?' Perhaps you've grappled with the fear of losing people's validation, or felt a constant need to perform for others? On this episode, I pull back the curtain on the 'nice guy' syndrome, a concept popularized by Dr. Robert Glover. Sharing from our personal experiences, I delve into the hidden darkness of this seemingly benign persona - the dishonesty, manipulation, and repressed anger that can surprisingly breed resentment.I then share the counterpoint to this - the good man. Unlike the 'nice guy,' a 'good man' doesn't seek validation from others but operates from a place of self-acceptance, sets boundaries, and acts with integrity. I share some tips on how to step away from the nice guy and into the integrated, healthy man.I also share how support and accountability from fellow men have helped men break free from old patterns. So if you're ready to break free from societal expectations, tune in for an engaging discussion on transforming from 'nice' to 'good.' Join me as I share intriguing tales from my recent Arizona trip, exploring not just the desert landscape but an introspective journey that has shaped my perspective on humility. I also share small stories from a restaurant I worked at that also doubled as a filming locationand introduced me to the stark contrast in celebrity behaviors - from Mariah Carey's notorious antics to Billy Ray Cyrus's down-to-earth demeanor. These experiences stirred a deep realization about the power of humility. What does it mean to be truly humble? It's not just about being meek; it's about balancing assertiveness with openness, acknowledging your worth without overshadowing others, and understanding that pride and being prideful are not the same. It's intriguing how a simple question can provoke deep thought, and in this episode I ask this very type of question to you. This question has prompted me to contemplate the connections I've built over time, and what this means in how I show up daily. I invite you to do the same. In this birthday episode (53, bitches) I also share about the vital concept of 'impression of increase.' The act of leaving others in a better state than you found them is a potent principle, not about gaining popularity or expecting returns, but about creating a positive ripple effect. Coupled with the law of cause and effect, these principles form the backbone to a life of purposeful impact. Let's breathe into the abundance that surrounds us and show appreciation to those who enrich our lives. Addiction SUCKS. We all know this, even those who are afflicted with it. But it's hard to tackle, both as the one who suffers, and the ones who love those who are suffering. In the latest episode of Seared Stories from the Stove, we address the pervasiveness of addiction and the unique challenges within the hospitality industry, and ways to help cut down, or even eliminate alcohol and drugs from your life. I also expose how the hard-living culture, shift work, and proximity to alcohol in the hospitality industry could contribute to substance abuse. I examine the stories we create around drinking, the importance of setting clear objectives, and how to dispute these narratives. Supporting a loved one with an addiction is not easy. This heartfelt conversation includes my personal experiences, tips to support loved ones without blaming oneself, and the significance of focusing on the problem, not the person. We also explore how to set boundaries and the importance of not enabling a loved one's addictive behaviors. If you're feeling lonely or need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to reach out to me.
