WWII STORIES: The Story Of A WWII Veteran Who Was At Iwo Jima Mr. Gallo’s ship left Hawaii on January 21, 1945 for their combat mission. They stopped for short periods on Eniwetok, Kwajaline Islands and Guam. No one was sure where they were headed. There was a lot of speculation. Finally they were told that their destination was Iwo Jima. The captain showed them a map of the island and explained to the men their orders. They were to land on Red Beach 2, which was just below Mt. Suribachi. After 35 days aboard ship, they arrived at the island on the afternoon of February 19, 1945, which was “D-Day.” They were prepared to land the next morning. Holocaust Survivor Series: Mr. Harel’s Story In early 1944, Mr. Harel’s family, along with all Hungarian Jews in Nagy Banya, the city he was in, were moved to a Jewish ghetto and then to Auschwitz, the extermination camp in Poland. This is where Mr. Harel was separated from his parents. First he was sent to Mauthausen, a concentration camp in Austria, and then to Ebensee another concentration camp. CHECK OUT: 1.) STORY SHARE: The Story Of Maximilliam Kolbe During the Second World War, Maximilliam Kolbe provided shelter to refugees from Greater Poland, including 2,000 Jews whom he hid from Nazi persecution in his friary in Niepokalanów. He was also active as a radio amateur, with Polish call letters SP3RN, vilifying Nazi activities through his reports. On February 17, 1941 he was arrested by the German Gestapo and imprisoned in the Pawiak prison, and on May 25, he was transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner #16670.
