"The very fact that a general problem has gripped and assimilated the whole of a person is a guarantee that the speaker has really experienced it and perhaps gained something from his sufferings. He will then reflect the problem for us in his personal life and thereby show us a truth." - Carl JungThe Head of Engagement and Outreach at American Business Media, Andrew Berman is joining us yet again to act as co-host to go through our very own Jay Doran's book, Thirty Days of Thought. Today, Andrew and Jay are getting into the value of writing things down. Though the technology exists to type or record, there is still something to be said for good old-fashioned penmanship. We hope you enjoy this episode of The Culture Matters Podcast.
Send us a textKate Downing joins us to discuss her new Bible study "Fighting With Fear" and shares profound insights about the theological significance of fear in ministry leadership and decision-making.• Fear itself isn't bad—we were designed to fear, but the object of our fear matters• Ministry decisions often trigger fears about consequences and others' opinions• The "brain dump" technique helps sort problems into what you can and cannot control• Decision fatigue plagues ministry leaders who try to reinvent the wheel annually• Document everything to avoid recreating the same work year after year• Christian leadership requires balancing fear-fueled paralysis with reckless fearlessness• Scripture mentions the fear of God over 200 times as our proper orientation• Leaders should filter decisions through the question: "Does this honor and obey God?"• Student anxiety often reveals deeper theological misconceptions about God's character• Ministry in 2025 should focus on equipping students as ministers, not just recipientsCheck out "Fighting With Fear: Becoming Fearfully Unafraid" by Kate Downing, available now wherever books are sold. Doug interviews Tyler Dunagin, an entrepreneur and CEO and founder of Turnserv LLC. Tyler shares how he founded one of America's fastest growing companies and talks about his goal setting framework, business psychology and personal growth. Tyler also reveals how he maintains laser focus through daily journaling, whiteboard visualisation and how this helps him achieve success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tyler believes in deeply understanding your "why", when you know what truly motivates you beyond surface level, you'll have extra fuel to pursue your goals with determination. Visualisation drives Tyler's success, he keeps three horizons of goals visible on whiteboards everywhere: weekly goals, yearly goals, and 'delusional' long-term visions. Daily journaling transformed Tyler's accountability, he writes at least one bullet point every day about goal progress, framing entries as if leaving a legacy of lessons for his three sons. Tyler strategically chose property for his business, targeting a market with predictability (50% of renters move yearly), growth potential (housing shortage) and opportunities for innovation. Building company culture is about psychology, not spreadsheets. Tyler focuses on making systems simple for his team, connecting them to purpose and creating transparent processes. Tyler gives managers equity in his companies, ensuring team members' interests align with company goals, so when he discusses selling the company, they are invested. Tyler credits vulnerability for his growth, he intentionally put himself in rooms where he felt inadequate and embraced being 'the dumbest person there' to accelerate learning rather than trying to appear clever. BEST MOMENTS "If I don't write it down, if I don't have a deadline, if I don't have some sort of tractional plan, it just doesn't happen. And I've learned that about myself so literally every single capacity that I do in my life is goal oriented." "Every single day I need to be able to see the goals I have. So, at my office, at my home where I'm at now, I have a simple whiteboard and in as little space as possible, I keep those things. Here's my goals for this week, here's my goals for this year, and here's my crazy, if I showed anybody this, they would think I'm delusional." "When you understand why you do things first, you gotta preface that when you understand what you're motivated about and why the, you're gonna, you're gonna have some extra fuel." "Growing a big business, you need to first look at the market that you're getting into 'cause it matters. You don't want to be getting into a profession that's so dependent on one person and it's a dying industry." "I look at the companies I have today and how quickly they have grown and all the accolades and whatnot. All of those things started in my head way before they actually came tangible and anybody can do these kind of things." ABOUT THE GUEST Tyler Dunagin, CEO and Founder of Turnserv LLC. Mom Who Works: Redefining what it means to be a working mom (in a world without working dads...)
First of all, how many times do I say dadgumit this episode? Please ignore. Second, this episode is for the mom who works and is making things SO big in her mind. All the tasks, all the projects, all the clients, all the kids, all the food-- all the things that clog our brains can quickly bring about anxiety and a doomed feeling that says I will never get this all done. We want to issue a simple challenge: write it down. We believe when we write things down, they get smaller-- and we remember how capable we truly are. Listen in! As always, drop us a note at stories@momwhoworks.com
In July, 2018, the dead body of an emaciated man was discovered in a tent on a Florida hiking trail. Everything about this death was a mystery, including the manner of death, and, especially who he was. An investigation leads to hundreds of fellow hikers to come forward with pictures and stories of said hiker, but no one knew his name. The only name he gave was "Denham" and "Mostly Harmless."Reference:The Called Him Mostly HarmlessMax
