A woman in Portland, Oregon started her daily exercise habit with one activity – walking her dog. Lindsay Kee then added movements to this daily activity. Before leaving on the walk, she did some standing stretches. On her return, she did other exercises such as jumping jacks. Over time, Kee added more exercises around the dog walk. She said adding exercises to an existing activity took the pressure off of creating a whole new daily exercise. And now more than a year later, she consistently exercises around the dog walk. Kee said, “I've found it to be really effective in helping me be consistent with things that I really do want to do.” What Kee did is called habit stacking. Writer S.J. Scott created this term for his 2014 book of the same name. The idea behind habit stacking is to attach something you want to start doing to something you already do every day. 作家S.J. A common example is flossing your teeth after brushing them. However, you can use habit stacking in many areas of your daily life. Kee, for example, places her vitamins next to the coffee machine. This helps her remember to take them every morning. Exercise experts say habit stacking is especially helpful if you are trying to increase exercise time. Dana Santas is a movement expert who has trained more than 50 professional sports teams. She combines exercise habits with personal health care. For example, Santas does push-ups before every shower. And she does leg exercises while brushing her teeth. She says that her electric toothbrush makes a sound every 30 seconds to remind her to brush different teeth. But she uses the reminder to change her exercises. “It's perfect,” she added. Two minutes of exercise may not get you in shape. But, experts say every little bit helps. Experts at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest getting 150 minutes of moderate activity, like a fast walk, every week. Or you could also get 75 minutes of very energetic activity, like jogging, every week. The health experts also suggest two days a week of strength training. Most people find keeping new habits difficult. And while habit stacking is not a perfect solution, it does help with one barrier -- decision-making. Gretchen Rubin is the writer of Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives. She said habit stacking is one of the best ways to start and keep new habits. The technique helps to remove the barrier of deciding when or if to do something. Rubin shared a story of her college days. To help her stay active, she would only shower if she had exercised that day. She suggested combining the new, or what she calls “shaky,” behavior with something you have to do or deeply want to do. “So you have to do the shaky habit before you get to the strong habit,” Rubin said. If she wants to listen to a podcast, her strong habit, she must do it while exercising on a running machine. For her, this will strengthen her shaky habit.

“It's important for folks to have the tools they need to not be deceived because when you're buying products, if you don't know how you're being fooled, you will be fooled,” says David Steinman, a best-selling author and chief officer of the Healthy Living Foundation. He joins Dr. Andrew Fix in this episode to put a spotlight on the hidden toxins in everyday life that threaten children's health.   From the food we eat to the products we use, harmful chemicals are everywhere. David points to organophosphate pesticides in non-organic produce, linking them to ADHD, cognitive issues, and brain damage in children. How can parents navigate these risks? David suggests organic foods, explaining their cleaner profiles and rising affordability.   Beyond food, David discusses the impact of plastic on health, and explains how particles end up in the brain and reproductive organs, which contribute to infertility and reduced IQ. He shares simple changes, like switching to glass containers, that make a significant difference.   What steps can you take today to protect your family? David's book, “Raising Healthy Kids: How to Protect Your Children from the Hidden Chemical Toxins in Our Everyday Lives,” offers parents the tools to create healthier environments for their children and future generations. This episode reminds us that small, intentional changes can lead to healthier lives and stronger communities.   Quotes “Every slice of bread that we've tested contains what is known as an organophosphate pesticide. Organophosphate pesticides are nerve toxins. They inhibit the body's ability to produce an enzyme called cholinesterase, which breaks down acetylcholine. The ingestion of organophosphates—and our exposure to them, particularly for kids, though there are adult consequences too—results in a greater risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cognitive loss, and IQ loss.” (08:29 | David Steinman) “If we were able to put every kid on an organic diet… we would have fewer cancers, higher birth rates, fewer cases of ADHD, fewer dysfunctional kids who are terrorizing communities, and a more sane political system because we'd stop shaving IQ points off our entire future generation.” (33:34 | David Steinman)  “When people discover how many chemical toxins are actually hidden in their consumer products, they want to know that kind of information… It's important for folks to have the tools they need to not be deceived because when you're buying products, if you don't know how you're being fooled, you will be fooled.” (48:50 | David Steinman) “Not many parents think about this, but if you have a kid at school, what's in the school's drinking water? Do you know what's in your kid's drinking water? You should.” (51:42 | David Steinman)   Links Connect with David Steinman: Websites: http://www.healthylivingmagazine.us    https://davidwilliamsteinman.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-steinman-345ba775/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/bydavidsteinman Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/davidwsteinman Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidsteinman_author/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DavidSteinman2012 Book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1510774394/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1   SideKick Tool: https://bit.ly/4a6CqJS   Movemate:

Wow did I get some feedback and support from my last podcast. I guess I”m not the only one who gets in my own way (“Who knew”- she says tongue in cheek). So often, we stop ourselves from getting what we want or even doing what we know we should be doing. Do you know why? Me too! I'd love to know- just kidding, I do know. It's because of a basic need we have to be comfortable. We sit in the comfortable fear or sit uncomfortably comfortable feeling guilty about our choices (hello Netflix rather than reading a book), or we tell ourselves we don't have time (again netflix or youtube shorts!).    As you listen to the rest of these “things” these excuses we are using to get in the way. I use to call them reasons and could justify each one- until I realized that was one of the ways I was getting in my own way too…there is a bonus for you

And get Point Road’s take on the steps you can take to realize your current habits around rest to making changes. May this episode be a good steward for you finding stillness in whatever way works for you. Ideas Shared:  Below are a few tips discussed in the episode on how to find rest amidst “busy” times. 5 Steps to Help You Downshift to Rest Get clear on your current habits Do a habits assessment  Set an intention around rest or stillness Interrupt your addictions Find an accountability partner Resources and Links: Today’s episode was recorded in the midst of a beautiful family retreat to the Hudson Valley. Here is the space where we stayed in Woodstock, NY – a magical retreat just a hop skip and a jump from downtown Woodstock, but nestled away in the woods. A perfect mix of restful seclusion and community. Soooooo good. Resources you might like to explore on habits: Point Road Journaling Exercise: Pick a timeframe (recommended: 24 hours and/or 1 week). Notice (without judgement!) how you spend your time. Write down what you observe capturing chunks of time in 15-30 minute increments. Review your data and notice (again without judgement!) what you see. It can be helpful to bring in a trusted set of fresh eyes to review the data as well and see what new perspective s/he might have. The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg  Better than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives by Gretchen Rubin  Resource on finding stillness after birth: The First Forty Days: The Essential Art of Nourishing the New Mother by Heng Ou The magical poem I read at the end of today’s episode. The Peace of Wild Things, by Wendell Berry When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

DEEP CABLES: Uncovering the Wiring of the World. The 8th event of the Disruption Network Lab. Keynote: The Internet, Really. Behind the Scenes of Our Everyday Lives with Andrew Blum (writer & journalist, USA). Respondent: Bernd Fix (computer security expert, Wau Holland Stiftung, DE). In the book Tubes: A Journey to the Center of the Internet (German title: Kabelsalat), journalist Andrew Blum goes inside the Internet's physical infrastructure, revealing an utterly fresh look at the online world we think we know. What is the Internet physically? And where is it really? The Internet, its material nuts and bolts, is an unexplored territory. Connecting a shockingly tactile realm of unmarked compounds, from the room in Los Angeles where the Internet first flickered to life to the caverns beneath Manhattan as new fiber-optic cable is buried; from the coast of Portugal, where a ten-thousand-mile undersea cable just two thumbs wide connects Europe and Africa, to the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, where Google, Microsoft, and Facebook have built monumental data centers, Andrew Blum chronicles the dramatic story of the Internet's development, explains how it all works, and takes the first ever in-depth look inside its hidden monuments. Is the Internet in fact “a series of tubes” as Ted Stevens, the late senator from Alaska, once famously described it? How can we know the Internet's possibilities if we don't know its parts? www.andrewblum.net (http://andrewblum.net/) www.disruptionlab.org/deep-cables (http://www.disruptionlab.org/deep-cables) Photo: Maria Silvano Produced by Voice Republic For more podcasts visit http://voicerepublic.com

When it comes to health and wellness, there is nothing more powerful than our habits. But in this modern, busy, sometimes even crazy world, what is the real secret to habit change that we all can apply? Does it matter for better wellness that you get up early, never take a bite of vanilla cake again, do crossfit or go running? Or is your tendency type so fixed so that you can eat what you want and still be healthy? In this episode, we'll get the answers to all these burning questions and much more, as we uncover the secret to habit change with #1 New York Times Best-selling Author, Gretchen Rubin. The Secret To Habit Change  I sat down with world famous author Gretchen Rubin last week in the Wellness Force studio to dive deep into a powerful question: Why do we do what we do? What came next over the next 60 minutes was powerful knowledge and tools extracted from Gretchen's 10+ years of research to help us better understand our habits and behaviors so we can show up more vital, healthy, and fit in our lives. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Our wellness force is the energy source that fuels us to be our very best. So today, we're tapping into, and getting more clear on your wellness force. Gretchen Rubin: Make or Break Your Habits Gretchen Rubin is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers, Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. In Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, she provides surprising insights and practical advice drawn from cutting-edge research, ancient wisdom, and her own observations, about how we can make our lives better than before. She investigates the multiple strategies she’s identified that help us make and break our habits. After all, habits are the invisible architecture of a happy life, and when we change our habits, we change our lives. The secret to changing a habit? First, we must know ourselves, so we can suit our habits to our own nature. It was Rubin’s longstanding interest in happiness that led her to the study of habits, because when she talked to people about their happiness challenges, they often pointed to a habit that they couldn’t make or break. This pattern made her ask, “When and why can people successfully change a habit—or not?” What It Really Takes To Change Our Habits Many of us want to change our lives by getting rid of bad habits and adopting new habits. But changing something that is fundamental to our daily lives can be very difficult. To get insights into how we can make effective and lasting habit changes, Gretchen Rubin explains the spark that lead to her researching how to use the power of custom habits to help transform our everyday lives. On her own wellness journey and never-ending passion to master habits, Gretchen shares towards the end of the show how reading Gary Taubes book, "Why We Get Fat," dramatically increased her body and health awareness by changing her diet to low carb; which ended up transforming her life. But before anyone can transform their life, they first must deeply know themselves. Gretchen has formulated just exactly how we can tap into this self-awareness in a system she calls "The Four Tendencies." What Is Your Tendency Type? Last month, I sent out Gretchen's 4 tendencies quiz to my social circles and here were the results: 14 Obligers 3 Upholders 1 Rebel 5 Questioners Where do you fall? For many of us, maintaining good habits can be both rewarding and challenging. Also, as we approach the end of one year and the start of another - living a happier and more successful life is without a doubt one our biggest goals. On this episode of Gen X Amplified, we have someone who is perhaps considered the "queen of habits and happiness", New York Times bestselling author, Gretchen Rubin. She is here to discuss her latest book, aptly titled Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Everyday Life, and to share some awesome insights on the steps we can take to change and conquer our habits. Gretchen Rubin is definitely a content creator phenomenon. She is a blogger, podcaster, speaker, and bestselling author of many books, including The Happiness Project, which really sparked her overall happiness movement. Then she "happily" put pen to paper again to write Happier at Home, which was Gretchen's personal account of what she implemented to create more happiness in the things that mattered to her at home - such as marriage, family treasured possessions, neighborhood, and parenthood. Now Gretchen's latest book, Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, is all about how to maintain and increase the good habits in your life - and how to break the bad ones that are keeping you from reaching your goals. She has also recently launched a weekly podcast called Happier with Gretchen Rubin that she co-hosts with her sister, where they discuss good habits and happiness. Gretchen has a passionate following both in print and online, and her books have sold more than two million copies worldwide in more than thirty languages. She also makes frequent TV appearances on shows like The Today Show, and others. As our featured guest on today's episode of Gen X Amplified, Gretchen speaks directly to the challenges and even the great opportunities that Gen-Xers have when it comes to creating better habits, especially during this "rush hour" of life as she calls it. Key Takeaways From This Episode: Why Gretchen made the decision to leave the practice of law to start her journey as a published author. What is one of Gretchen's themes in all of her writings on happiness. Why the biggest "happiness" challenge that most people face actually deals with habits. The most important thing to think about when changing habits is focusing on strategies that are right for us - and not others. What are the (4) Four Tendencies/personality traits that Gretchen created to identify how people respond to expectations. Also, there is a quiz you can take to find out yours! Why being very specific and concrete is the best approach when setting New Years resolutions, habits, and goal setting. And so much more! SHOW NOTES!  Find all resources mentioned at http://www.onairwithella.com/037-gretchen-rubin-habits   Why can some people just wake up one day and decide to change their lives? How does someone wake up one day and just quit smoking or quit drinking or stop eating sweets or processed food? Why do some people struggle with forming habits that actually make them happy? They know they make them happier, but they still struggle doing them. Why do so many of us know what to do, but we just aren’t making the changes in our lives?  We know what to do but we just aren’t doing it.   How do we actually change?   These questions led me on a quest and that quest led me to Gretchen Rubin, the best-selling author, wife and mother of two. I knew Gretchen already from her previous books; I read The Happiness Project years ago and I thought it was amazing. So when she came out with Better Than Before, her newest book, I picked up it up for myself. I read Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives and I became a woman obsessed.  I chased Gretchen down. I said, “Oh, I know you’re on every television channel in the world. I know you’re at the top of iTunes with your own podcast.  I know that you are in extreme demand right now by every media outlet known to man, but could you maybe come talk to us? Because I believe you can change everybody’s lives who listens to this show that we do together.” And guess what? Gretchen didn’t hesitate, and she said yes.  This show today is about how we actually create lasting change in our lives, and I hope that it is of as much value to you as my conversation with Gretchen was to me.  Let me know –  What is one habit are you trying to break? What is one habit you are trying to create? Find all resources mentioned at http://www.onairwithella.com     We want to hear from you! Leave any questions for GRETCHEN or ELLA in the comments and make sure you subscribe in iTunes or Stitcher Radio so that you automatically get new episodes.   Have you connected with me on Facebook? We share lots of content, recipes, photos, motivation and more over there, so COME ON OVER. :-)

In this episode of the Confessions of a Terrible Husband podcast I talk with New York Times Best Selling Author Gretchen Rubin about how we can use her new book, Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, to improve your relationship. I firmly believe that Gretchen's book can have a similar impact on relationships to The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman because it not only helps you understand yourself, but it also provides insight into the mind of your spouse.    Confessions of a Terrible Husband is a marriage podcast for people who are looking for real advice from the trenches and who are committed to taking personal responsibility over improving their relationships.  Hear Nick Pavlidis talk all things marriage and life and interview people like Fawn Weaver from The Happy Wives Club, John G. Miller, of QBQ, Inc., Dan Miller and Joanne Miller of 48 Days to the Work You Love, Derek and Carrie Olsen from Better Conversations, Marcus and Ashley Kusi from the Our Peaceful Family, Farnoosh Torabi from the So Money podcast, Shawna and Thomas McGreevy from McGreevy Cakes, Gretchen Rubin of The Happiness Project, Happier at Home, and Better Than Before, and many, many more, about the best ways to have an amazing relationship!
