Join us this week as Mike sits down with Renee Van Acker, the Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph. Mike and Renee discuss the notion that there are limited or restrictive careers in Agriculture that dissuade many from entering the industry. Dwayne became interested in helicopters as a hobby but now operates Great Lakes Helicopters out of Cambridge. Christoph and Mike look at the agriculture industry and its relationship with sustainability. Sustainability being the practice of attempting to reduce damage or degradation caused, has various everchanging processes, goals and needs from industry to industry or even farm to farm. Christoph utilizes his insight and experience with sustainability to explain how sustainability operates within our government and our communities, with a focus on sustainability for different breed of livestock.

John and Mike discuss the series of short courses that teach agriculture business management skills that is offered free to those interested in learning the various skills necessary for farm management. We explore the breakdown of these courses to highlight why they are important for farm business management and how to take these lessons from practice to application on the farm.
This week on The Back 40 Mike is joined by a member of the Canadian Space Agency, Matt Bamsey. Bamsey is currently involved with The Deep Space Food Challenge, an initiative that looks to create sustainability in low input, high yield, food growth processes that are necessary for extended travel in low to no resource environments such as space. Mike and Matt discuss The Deep Space Food Challenge, why it is necessary and the benefits the challenge can have on our food security across the world.
This week on The Back 40 we are joined by the Director of Trillium Mutual Insurance Pat Bushby. Pat has had a distinguished career in grain, working with Viterra and acting as President for the Grain Elevator and Processing Society. Mike and Pat kick off this week’s episode with discussion surrounding the grain industry. They then break down the impacts of the Russian war against Ukraine on various aspects of agriculture including the growing and transport of crops in these areas of strife. We finish the episode by breaking down the uncertain future of food security on the world stage.

This week on The Back 40 we are joined by Abby Stec, Director of Business Development at Elephant Thoughts. Elephant Thoughts, located in Durham ON, was founded in 2002 with the goal of putting education first to create sustainable change for youth facing barriers. Their local farm property is over 135 acres and boasts farm land, hiking trails, several event facilities, overnight accommodations and much more. Their focus is to be inclusive and by providing these resources to those facing any type of barrier they can start to improve access to quality education to as many as possible!
Today, February 22nd, Canada’s Ag Day, we are joined by a very special guest, The Hon. Rob Black, Senator for Ontario. Senator Black has been heavily involved in agriculture with OMAFRA, 4-H, Junior Farmers, AALP and in February of 2021 he was recognized by the Canadian Western Agribition as one of the top 50 most influential people in agriculture. Senator Black joins us to discuss a number of topics including his journey & role in the Senate, the importance of celebrating Ontario’s Agriculture industry and what’s in store for the future of agriculture across Canada.
This week on The Back 40 we spoke with Chris Van Esbroeck, Stewardship Services Coordinator at the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. Chris joins us to discuss the various programs they offer to help farmers with advice or funding to address their land concerns. They work with each individual land owner to meet their specific needs to help combat climate change, land erosion or increase the diversity of their natural areas.
This week we are joined by Martin Pochtaruk, President of Heliene. Heliene is a company that is challenging the status quo or what solar panels can do. Solar panels have become more abundant over the years as more people look towards renewable sources of energy for their operations needs. Martin joins us to discuss how their technology is allowing farmers to not only produce energy, but also grow crops using the same area.
This week on The Back 40 we spoke with Cole Jones, CEO of Local Line. Local Line is an online marketplace for the food industry that helps farmers list, sell and manage their products. They build e-commerce, CRM and inventory management solutions that helps farmers, wholesalers and other food system stakeholders manage and grow their business. Grain Discovery is an Ontario based company that is working to digitize the entire supply chain from seed to the end consumer. Their focus is to provide a tool for producers to meet the increasing consumer demand for transparency using blockchain technology to create a digital food passport. Amy and her husband Mike started farming in 1995 as pork producers and have since expanded their operation, along with their six kids, to include poultry and cash crop on farms all across Ontario and some parts of the United States. The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef’s mission is to advance beef sustainability in Canada by bringing together many different stakeholders from across the industry. She joins us to discuss how the Roundtable is working to help improve the sustainability of beef particularly from the perspective of greenhouse gases.
This week on The Back 40 we spoke with Emma Butler of J & E Meats who has recently opened up an on-farm retail location. The Butler’s are the fourth generation operating their family farm in the Chatham-Kent area. They have over 1200 acres of crops, along with sheep and cattle, which provide the fresh, quality meat for the store. Emma joins us to talk about how they found and connected with new customers and what they have learned since opening their store. Emma also talks about how she uses the store as a platform to educate customers about their farm and livestock.
This week on The Back 40 we are joined by Martin Ritsma. Martin is the Deputy Mayor from Stratford Ontario, local farmer, Principal, Vice Principal and Teacher at the local school. Martin joins us to discuss an initiative that is tackling the drought in Western Canada, called Hay West. The severity of the climate conditions has impacted local farmers there so much that Martin has organized for loads of hay to be sent to farmers most in need. Martin ran the same initiative in 2002 and moves forward in 2021 with the goal of helping one farmer at a time to make a huge impact.
There is no question that technology plays a major role in farming all across Ontario. Whether it be robotic milkers, driverless farm machinery or drones, farms are becoming increasingly reliant on technology. Sougata Pahari, Founder & CEO of Koretchi Innovations, joins us to discuss how his company is using robots to automate many repetitive and sometimes unsafe farm tasks. His company is continuing to adapt and look for new ways for autonomous technology to be used to meet the growing demands of Ontario farmers.
This week we are joined by Amanda Brodhagen who has grown up in rural Ontario and has an extensive amount of knowledge regarding the ag sector including the beef industry. Amanda grew up on a beef farm near Bruner, Ontario and is currently an Agriculture & Agri-Food Associate at the Pathway Group. Amanda wears many different hats including being a Counsellor for the Township of Perth East as well as working on her multi-generational family farm in Perth County. Amanda joins us to discuss her experiences, what the future looks like and what some of the challenges are that producers will face.

This week on The Back 40 we are joined by Chantal Lewington, Owner of Click Fork & Co-Owner of Dalew Farms. Chantal has been involved in the food and agricultural industry for over 16 years and runs a grass-finished beef operation with her husband and three kids. Click Fork is an online marketplace where local producers can market and sell their products directly to consumers. The website allows consumers to connect with farmers and enjoy a variety of fresh, local products delivered directly to their home.

The National Zero Waste Council works by collaborating with various sectors to drive change towards waste prevention & reduction through the design, production and usage of goods.
