What if Canada could become a global food superpower—from farm to fork, from field to plate? In this live-recorded episode taped at Farm Credit Canada's Future of Food Conference, I sat down with two titens transforming Canada's agricultural landscape: Curt Vossen, the visionary CEO of Richardson International, and Kristjan Hebert, a farmer who manages his tens of thousands of acress of land with intelligence, passion, and pursuit. Together, they tackle the future of food—from battling inefficiencies in our supply chains to seizing untapped global markets. They speak with brutal honesty about what's holding Canada back: our mindset, our infrastructure, and our humility. Their solution? A call to action that blends bold vision with incremental, achievable steps. In the final segment, Lisa Ashton of RBC Thought Leadership shares powerful insights into Canada's strengths, risks, and unrealized potential in agriculture, backed by data, policy, and her personal story, which began on a farm. My take: Canada does not need to be reliant on one trading partner, we have what it takes to create an economy powered by purposeful jobs and those who both dream and do. Let's all work together to make Canada a Food Superpower.   To find out more about Farm Credit Canada: https://www.fcc-fac.ca

Farmland values across Canada continued their steady upward trend in 2024, with the average price of farmland increasing by 9.3 per cent, according to Farm Credit Canada's latest Farmland Values Report. While the pace of growth slowed slightly compared to the 11.5 per cent increase recorded in 2023, FCC Chief Economist J.P. Gervais says the market remains strong despite some pressures. “The increase in Canadian farmland values in 2024 reflects an enduring strength in demand for farmland amid some pressures on commodity prices,” Gervais said. “The limited supply of farmland available for sale combined with lower borrowing costs resulted in an increase in the average price of farmland across the country.”

Blanket tariffs — like the proposed 25 per cent tariffs on all imports into the United States from Canada, set to come into place March 4 – affect every single industry. However, although the effects on almost all of Canada's industries are significant and negative, they're also all unique. Those who work in export commodities know that these complexities extend beyond consumer-level "buy Canadian" sentiment. In this special episode of AgAnnex Talks, we discuss the unique ways in which the agriculture, agri-food and growing sectors would be affected by the planned tariffs. They discuss the subsectors that would be most affected, how our current trade processes work at a granular level, what lesser-known factors have industry groups worried and how these tariffs fit into an already at-times fraught context when it comes to labour, infrastructure and more.Hosts Bree Rody (Manure Manager, Potatoes in Canada and Drainage Contractor editor) and Amy Kouniakis (Greenhouse Canada editor) also feature economic perspectives that touch on historic precedence of both tariff and non-tariff-related trade disruptions and what the industry learned from those times, innovation opportunities and just why the U.S. became such an important trade partner in the first place.Today's guests of AgAnnex Talks are Colin Hornby, GM of Keystone Ag Producers, Victoria Stamper, GM of United Potato Growers of Canada and Amanda Norris, senior economist with Farm Credit Canada

A Farm Credit Canada report shows farmland rental rates are keeping pace with farmland values. FCC has been comparing rental rates to the price of farmland and the data shows the national rent-to-price ratio in 2023 was 2.52 per cent, reflecting a decline from the previous year. FCC Senior Economist Justin Shepherd says in 2023 we saw some fairly strong farmland value growth across the prairies, especially in Saskatchewan as well as Manitoba, while Alberta had a little bit slower growth, but it was still positive. Seeding is underway in Manitoba.  While other parts of the prairies started the season on the dry side, its a different story in Manitoba. Rain has slowed spring seeding but will give this year's crops a good start. Dennis Lange is a pulse and soybean specialist with Manitoba Agriculture and the editor of the provincial crop report.
