Emma Anderson is Head of Solutions Delivery at Planet, a payments company based in Ireland, that provides services to companies like Starbucks, Adidas and Kate Spade. It’s an industry we don’t often talk about - yet it’s played a vital role in enabling our ability to make online payments and digital transactions. Emma had several stops along the way to get to this point, but her original career goal had nothing to do with the payments industry. Her parents were missionaries, and that inspired Emma to pursue being a medical missionary. But Emma struggled to make it through the rigorous and demanding coursework of medical school at the University of Birmingham in the UK. So, she dropped out and started working as a sales and operations coordinator for a heavy machinery company. In 2007, Emma was introduced to the endless possibilities in the world of digital payments when she accepted a position at Barclays. And then pivoted to a Senior Marketing Manager role at Visa to promote digital payment products and services to greater Europe. And eventually took a position with Elavon that involved less travel when she needed to think seriously about starting a family. Emma absolutely loved working at Elavon, a subsidiary of U.S. Bank, until some changes shook up the company’s focus on ethical business practices. Knowing the importance of transparency in the financial world, Emma spoke up as a whistleblower at the risk of more losses to the company and ruining her relationship with her boss. Honesty is a big part of Emma’s story, so when she was later offered a new job in the UAE around the same time she finally got pregnant, she knew she had to turn it down. After the birth of their first child, Emma then took a position with Planet where she works today. Emma’s story is all about the importance of honesty and trusting God when the outcome looks different than what we imagined. Fight For Your Right To Get Better with Robin Anderson. Robin moved to his town in December 2015 from Spokane. He's been a medical card holder since 2012. Once Robin moved there he was immediately targeted by neighbors in the town that did not like them here because they were newcomers. They tried to be nice and respectful to a lot of them but three totally decided to Target them. There are several bogus police reports that neighbors made constantly calling the police for stupid reasons then the police department will take just their word as evidence and arrest them for stupid things like disorderly conduct and others. Then the neighbors went to the courthouse and filed an anti-harassment order claiming that they were harassing them. The judge awarded it to them with zero proof. Now the neighbors can simply call the police and say that they spoke to them and the police show up and arrest him. Robin's wife deals with a seizure problem and high-stress situations cause them to kick in. Robin himself has mental and physical disabilities. Robin and his wife were subject to a police raid from all of the harassment from neighbors.

People are so good at minimizing the human situation. I've encountered this throughout Mary's and my ministry, right from the very start, in Silver Spring, MD. The religious "professionals" detested my message, that the world was in incomparable conflict with itself, and that each human being experiences comparable conflict inwardly. People would say, your message is too "down", and I just don't like it. It's too dark, or depressing, or gloomy. But what actually happened is that a majority of the people listening tuned in fast! And then they started inviting their friends. It's not that the human condition is hopeless. With God it is never hopeless. But without God, yes, the human condition is hopeless. And the older you get -- I know this can sound patronizing -- but the older you get, the more empirically evident it becomes that life stumps a person. An inflexible person becomes an impossible person -- and an impossibly unhappy person. A messy person becomes a hoarder. A depressed person becomes suicidal -- and actually DOES TAKE THEIR OWN LIFE. To put it mildly, nascent emotional tendencies in people become hard-and fast character assaults -- on everyone else! But you're not allowed to say this. Every time I pointed out the obvious, a couple incensed hearers would come up briskly, and accuse me of terminal pessimism. But we weren't. We weren't pessimists. We were realists, and had the rudiments, from the Bible and a few wise mentors, of applicable hope. Because with God, nothing is impossible. I can honestly say that and look you in the face. This podcast simply says that it's time we accepted the disappointments and impasses of our lives; and instead of fighting them, give them to God --- Jesus, really -- in a spirit of repentance and humility. Say "Uncle!" But don't carp. Don't "say it isn't so" (Hall and Oates). Be like 'Pilgrim', in Robin Anderson's favorite great Epic, and lay that burden, of the truth, down, at the foot of Someone. LUV U.
Matt and Robin Anderson challenge us to focus on One Word for 2018. What word might God be asking you to focus on?

With support for the war in Iraq severely waning and a new democratic legislature in power, the stories that we hear from Washington and in the media might be different ones this year than they have been for the last few. We talk to to author and Fordham professor Robin Anderson about the stories we've been telling about this war, and the stories we tell about others. Her new book is "A Century of Media, A Century of War." --Aired 1/22/2007
