Kids and teens are experiencing less independence than in the past — whether due to screen time, parents' fears of letting them roam freely, or other factors. It's a problem. But why? And what can be done? In this episode, host Dr. Delaney Ruston discusses this important topic with journalist Lenore Skenazy, who was labeled “America's Worst Mom” after letting her 9-year-old take the New York City subway home alone. Skenazy has spent years sounding the alarm on the harms of decreased youth autonomy, including co-founding Let Grow with psychologists Jonathan Haidt and Peter Gray. This episode explores the factors contributing to decreased independence and offers tools for parents and schools to combat this trend. It also examines the role of technology and tracking devices in this context, addressing both their benefits and potential pitfalls. Bliesner operated a now-shuttered fruit juice facility in Sunnyside, Washington.During an FDA inspection in May 2018, VPI employees used caution tape to prevent investigators from entering a room at Bliesner's Grape Road Facility in Washington that held concrete storage vats. The workers told FDA investigators that the facility was unsafe to enter and contained no juice or juice products. Not only did that room store juice, but it was often old unsold grape juice concentrate, sometimes held for years in large concrete vats that were not properly covered or cooled, according to the Department of Justice. Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

That teacher was Miss Moretti of the third grade for a shy, socially awkward Charles. She gave him permission to engage with his artistic passions and live more fearlessly. "It was transformative," he explains. "Those experiences with remarkable teachers helped me find my place alongside the other theater and chorus kids."  We're grateful to that long line of encouraging adults. Without them, Charles may never have found a creative home at SFO. As Director of School Programs, Charles is tirelessly pursuing opportunities to make learning accessible and more operatic.  "Opera has it all. Poetry and dance, theater, media, arts, music. It's all there," he marvels. "There's an understanding that as human beings, we're naturally curious. By drawing the arts into the classroom, we're tapping into that natural curiosity and deepening the engagement that students––and their teachers!––have with whatever else they're learning in school." It's encore time! After a brief hiatus to appreciate a triumphant 65th summer of opera in the desert, Destination Santa Fe Opera returns with one last conversation to close out this podcast season. Host Jane Trembley chats with Charles Gamble, SFO's newly appointed Director of School Programs, and Amy Owens, newly appointed Director Designate of the Young Voices Program about how opera's inclusive, collaborative storytelling can boost self-esteem and confidence in young people. Charles and Amy also share the paths that led each of them to their current positions, and they provide valuable details regarding the community engagement programs that SFO is involved in, including Opera Storytellers Summer Camp, the Young Voices Program, Active Learning Through Opera (ALTO), and The New Mexico Alliance for Responsive Teaching (NM ART.) Opera often seems insular and complicated to those unfamiliar with the art form. All the more reason for students to gain exposure to it as soon as possible. “Opera does a remarkable job bringing together every art form,” says Charles, thoroughly smashing opera's stiff reputation. He is also quick to point out that a student's first opera might be their last if the introduction isn't engaging or relatable. “If you consider that each one of the components is actually a point of access rather than focusing on the overwhelming experience, I think that's the way into [opera] for most students.” Amy agrees. “There's an infinite well of curiosity, of things to discover through opera, from the super-analytical stuff to the very playful and vulnerable.” She and Charles point to arts education in general and opera exposure specifically as scaffolding for skills-building, lessons that will support students throughout their lives.  Thanks for joining us behind the scenes this season!  Learn more: School Programs, The Santa Fe Opera The Young Voices of the Santa Fe Opera Opera Storytellers Summer Camp ALTO: Active Learning Through Opera FEATURING Charles Gamble - Director of School Programs, Santa Fe Opera Amy Owens - Director Designate of the Young Voices Program of the Santa Fe Opera Website Facebook Instagram SFO TikTok SFO Twitter SFO YouTube CREDITS Destination Santa Fe Opera is a Santa Fe Opera podcast produced and edited by Andrea Klunder at The Creative Impostor Studios.
