Over 700 people of all ages including local dignitaries and politicians, came out to tour the place, eating bushels of popcorn, drinking gallons of coffee, and generally creating the most festive atmosphere you could imagine for the opening of an industrial canning facility. Why the excitement? Because this was MCC's new Stationary Meat Cannery. We hear from Jon Lebold, Martin Rahn, and Dylan Yantzi about the early challenges, the recent challenges and how this project “kept drawing in miracles."Transcription here.Discussion guide here. Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (December 1874) John McCabe was carting cook stoves to Matteawan when his horses were frightened by an approaching locomotive. The horses raced along the track and a stove fell off the wagon in front of the engine, which demolished it. Lewis Tompkins, of the Fishkill Landing Hat Works, put down one of his prized brown mares after it broke its leg in the stable. It was valued at $700 [about $19,000 today]. Patrick Murphy, who worked at the Gowdy brickyard near Dutchess Junction, was arrested on assault charges. Murphy was absent when John Gowdy distributed wages and later demanded his $28 [$775]. Gowdy said he did not have the cash on him and Patrick, who was drunk, attempted to take Gowdy's horse. When Gowdy resisted, Murphy punched him. Murphy was fined $25, which he had Gowdy take from his pay, leaving him with $3 [$83]. The Matteawan Manufacturing Co. was making 200 dozen ladies' jockeys every day but was still 150 cases behind filling orders. Two sheep owned by Jacob VanWyck near Fishkill were slaughtered in his field and the meat carried off. James Pettigrove moved from Cold Spring to Fishkill Landing to operate Traver's hotel, which had been damaged by fire on Sept. 3 but restored. Several young men in Matteawan formed a gymnasium society. W.H. Mase of Fishkill Landing sold his trotting horse Mountaineer for $6,000 [$166,000]. A Fishkill Landing milkman said he would sell milk through the winter at summer prices of 6 cents [$1.66] a quart. A Matteawan Free School teacher found in an old history book a handwritten copy of a Thanksgiving sermon preached by the Rev. Samuel Prime on Nov. 23, 1833. [In 1840, the young Presbyterian minister left the village for New York City to become an editor at a Christian newspaper where he worked for the next 45 years.] The Seamless Manufacturing Co. of Matteawan received an order for thousands of skirts, in variety of sizes, including what were thought to be the largest ever made in the U.S.: 5 feet, 7 inches long; 5 feet, 1 inch around the waist; 10 inches around the hip; and 16 inches at the bottom. Mr. and Mrs. David Kniffen, of Fishkill, lost two children - their 5-year-old daughter and 2½-year-old son - in the same week to diphtheria. Their third child, an infant, was not expected to survive. When the Albany Post reported that "Aunt Betty," the last known person enslaved in New York state, had died in Cayuga County at age 99, the Poughkeepsie Press reported that an inmate at the Dutchess County poorhouse was older. He recalled being traded for a barrel of rum. [According to research by the New York State Archives, a woman named Sophy, who died in November 1876 in Cornwall, was likely the last surviving person who had been enslaved in New York.] On a late Saturday night train, a passenger refused to pay the fare. The conductor ordered him off at New Hamburg, but the passenger retreated to the toilet and sat with his back against the door. At Poughkeepsie, a police officer ripped off the door with a crowbar. At 3 a.m. on a Saturday, a fire at John Gerow's brick building in Matteawan destroyed everything inside, including the stock of the Noel & Smith clothing store, Hatche's cigar store and Vosburgh's printing office. Frank Timoney, the brick manufacturer, and an employee, William Doyle, were struck by an express train south of Dutchess Junction. Doyle was killed and Timoney was not expected to survive. [Timoney lived another 29 years.] 125 Years Ago (December 1899) A man who missed the last train at Fishkill Landing for Cold Spring hired a wagon. According to the Matteawan Journal, the driver had been on duty for hours and the passenger had not slept for two days, so both fell sound asleep on the journey along the river road. When the horse reached a trough in the village, it took a drink, turned around and returned to Fishkill Landing. There, the passenger and driver awoke and, confused, ...

Residents lobby officials for accessible parks Having a physical disability is a challenge. Having a physical disability, owning a dog and finding an accessible park presents an even greater challenge. Cali Gorevic, 80, who lives in Philipstown, has difficulty walking. She has two "country dogs" - a golden retriever and a German shepherd - that would benefit from running free and meeting other canines at the town's North Highlands Park on Route 9 at Glassbury Court. The problem, she said, is that the dog park is located more than 100 yards from the parking area. Fabiola Gomez, 62, a New Hamburg resident who suffers from post-polio syndrome, would also like to exercise her giant schnauzer at North Highlands Park. In addition to the distance from parking, she said the gravel and grass path leading to the park is unsuitable for the devices she uses to improve her mobility, such as forearm crutches or a wheelchair. Gomez and Gorevic each complained to the Town of Philipstown but said they were not satisfied by the response. Gorevic wrote Supervisor John Van Tassel in August to suggest two handicapped spaces adjacent to the dog park. Van Tassel responded that a lot isn't possible at that location because Glassbury Court's septic field lies beneath it. Van Tassel expanded on his response in an email to The Current on Wednesday (Oct. 2), writing that "due to terrain and other physical boundaries we cannot make the dog park fully accessible" and that the town had problems in the past when visitors were able to drive closer to the park and added a gate to prevent it. "I'm sympathetic to her wishes to be able to utilize the dog park; it's just not feasible for that area of the park to be handicap-accessible," Van Tassel wrote. Gomez said she contacted the town in June and also reached out to Disability Rights New York, a nonprofit that provides free legal and advocacy services to people with disabilities. In response, DRNY wrote to the Philipstown Recreation Department stating that the federal Americans with Disabilities Act "requires that services and programs provided by local governments be readily accessible to individuals with disabilities," although the ADA qualifies that requirement, saying that when full compliance is impractical because of terrain, "the service must be made accessible to the greatest extent that is structurally feasible." DRNY also noted that the ADA requires public facilities, including dog parks, to provide accessible parking and a "stable, firm, level and slip-resistant" path that is the shortest accessible route to the dog park. Van Tassel said he would ask the town attorney for a legal opinion. Marilynn Glasser, the president of Dog Park Concept and Consulting in Patterson and author of Dog Park Design, Development and Operation, has worked with dozens of communities across the U.S. She said the ADA "absolutely" applies to municipal dog parks but municipalities, especially in the Northeast, often create parks with little or no thought to making them accessible. She noted that while "a disabled person needs to be able to get inside a dog park," they don't necessarily need access to the entire area where dogs are free to run. She said a path to a park should be wheelchair-friendly and that long paths are also more difficult for people on crutches. Shorter, easier paths also benefit people with heart conditions and other health issues, she said. The lack of accessibility at North Highlands Park is not unusual. A survey of local municipalities found no ADA-compliant dog parks in Peekskill, Kent, Fishkill, Putnam Valley or Nelsonville. County parks in Westchester and Dutchess also lack facilities. In Putnam County, Chris Ruthven, the director of parks and recreation, said a dog park being developed with Guardian Revival at Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel will be ADA-compliant. In Beacon, Friends of Beacon Dog Park operates its facility at Memorial Park. While parking is nearby, the site is not fully ADA-com...

Adam Schwartzentruber is the founder of Boko, a design-build studio and workshop in New Hamburg where he works with his wife, Stephanie Boutari, a muralist and fellow University of Waterloo School of Architecture graduate, frequently collaborating with each other on a variety of public artworks.  From installing an original Volkswagen Beetle that appears to be exploding at Kitchener’s Settlement Co. to creating custom-built ice cream carts and a tasting room for Four All Ice Cream, Schwartzentruber’s experimental installations are stellar in execution and design.  On Bonn Park with Sara Geidlinger and Marshall Ward, Adam Schwartzentruber discusses his common desire to pursue a full-time creative career with his wife, Stephanie, his site-specific installations, and how he cut up an old car and put it back together.  BOKO INSTAGRAM BONN PARK INSTAGRAM SUPPORT A LOCAL BUSINESS LIKE: GINA'S SPA

Waterloo Region-based Canadian/Egyptian artist and designer, Stephanie Boutari’s bright, bold, and colourful murals and installations celebrate the beauty of balance and simplicity.  Born and raised in Bahrain, Boutari came to Canada 15 years ago for her post-secondary education, studying architecture and completing her Master’s degree at the University of Waterloo.   A cooperative partner at BOKO, a design-build studio and workshop in New Hamburg founded by her husband Adam Schwartzentruber, whom she frequently collaborates with, Boutari’s eye-catching downtown public artworks can be found in places like Goudies Lane, Abe Erb, Settlement, and inside Vidyard, a converted historical building near Victoria Park.   On Bonn Park with Sara Geidlinger and Marshall Ward, Boutari reflects on how urban art, site-specific murals, and experimental works not only adds meaning to our everyday lives but creates one-of-a-kind gathering spaces in a vibrant and progressive technology hub like Waterloo Region.   https://www.stephanieboutari.com https://www.instagram.com/stephboutari/ https://www.instagram.com/bonnparkpodcast/

Twas Now, is a New Hamburg-based duo, with a superbly refined blend of two heavenly voices. Diana and Mike Erb are so perfectly paired, they should almost be a couple and get married. If you didn’t already know, they are also a happily married couple, who’ve known each other since childhood, but i’ll let them explain. Rooted in roots, country and folk, the music of Twas Now transcends the artform of songwriting, harmony and each of their respective genres and influencers. I’m delighted to have officially met Diana and to have gotten to see my old friend Mike, and extra delighted to have this time with them. Enjoy! // Featuring live performances by this episode’s guests. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/todddonaldshow/message

My guest today is Peter Visscher, Chief Technology Officer at Ontario Drive and Gear. Ontario Drive and Gear is not your typical space company. In fact, for most of its 55 year history, Ontario Drive and Gear had nothing to do with space, that is until 2008. And still today, this New Hamburg based business, just west of Kitchener-Waterloo, is still primarily known for developing gears and transmission systems as well as their ARGO all terrain vehicles. How they got involved in the space sector is part of the story we’ll hear today. The other part of the story is how this company has turned that involvement into a new commercial line of XTreme terrain robotics, or XTR, and how their robotic mobility platform might be roving the surface of the moon in the not too distant future.

Milky is committed to the story of Winnie the Puto, the psychopath of The Hundred Acre Wood. Pouch here. We knew you guys missed Paco, but we wanted to try out some new meat before we delved back into our regulars. She's been out of the loop for quite some time, so it was fun catching up with her on the podcast. Of course, another rousing edition of Paco's Tacos.
