Welcome back to season 11 of Down the Garden Path podcast! After a winter hiatus, landscape designer Joanne Shaw is excited to kick off a new podcast season revisiting new topics and old favourites while gaining valuable wisdom and advice from industry experts. Here are some of the topics covered in this episode: Plans for the new season, including interviews with experts and authors in the landscape and horticulture industry Her recent experiences at the Landscape Designers Conference and Landscape Ontario Congress: At the Landscape Designer Conference, keynote speaker Dr. Allan Armitage, a professor from Atlanta, spoke about transforming chaos into contentment. This concept of transforming a chaotic outdoor space into a contented and enjoyable environment emphasizes the importance of curb appeal and year-round outdoor enjoyment. During the Landscape Ontario Congress, Joanne attended a talk by OMAFRA, (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) that discussed the impact of the box tree moth on the boxwood industry including prevention methods and treatment options: It has spread across most of Ontario and Quebec since its first sighting in 2017 and has caused significant damage to boxwood plants. While efforts to contain the moth have been unsuccessful in the east, they have managed to prevent its spread to Western Canada. Joanne discusses potential remedies, including using a bacterial spray (Btk) but notes that frequent application is necessary due to the moth's voracious appetite. Feed the world. Preserve the environment for everyone's enjoyment. Christine Brown, one of our 2024 IWCA honourees, views her mission in life to be one of stewardship. It's that steadfast belief that helps Brown feel like she's among family when she networks with her fellow manure extension associates, wherever they're from.It didn't take Brown long to know she wanted to be in agriculture. Raised on a small dairy farm, Brown initially envisioned herself as an agricultural journalist – she didn't want to be involved in "widgets," but eventually found a love of conservation, soil and crops which led her to OMAFRA (now OMAFA), where she took on manure as a specialty. Her career has always offered a healthy balance of science and people. "I love the variety of activities that I get to be involved with, and that every day is different," she tells agriculture editor Bree Rody. She was part of the original team that developed the nutrient management software for OMAFA, was part of the local team that hosted the first-ever Ontario Manure Expo (as well as the first virtual Manure Expo). But her career has been defined just as much by the little things as it has been by the big things – like making a point of remembering a farmer's wife's name, or changing a tire in the field. In Brown's interview, she discusses how her lifelong confidence helped her feel secure in a male-dominated field, what her mentors mean to her, the reality of balancing family and career, and why it's important to work in the field with the eyes of a child.

Continuous corn has been possible the past couple decades thanks to Bt corn hybrids. But, as in many situations where there are limited options for control, the repeated use of Bt corn has allowed resistance to develop in corn rootworm populations. In a report published in late August, Tracey Baute, field crop entomologist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), stated that cases of corn rootworm resistance to Bt rootworm (Bt-RW) hybrids have cropped up in fields of continuous corn in new counties. Corn is used by many livestock farmers as feed due to its abundance and nutritional content. So, what can we do? In this episode of Inputs, Baute discusses how Bt corn hybrids have worked to manage corn rootworm so far, how resistance has developed and what it means for corn growers going forward.Never miss an episode of Inputs by subscribing to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Show notesOMAFRA's Field Crop News recently discussed strategies for dealing with resistant rootworm populations;Alternative forages to silage corn (compiled by OMAFRA forage and grazing specialist Christine O'Reilly;Baute references a massive windstorm in Iowa – this was the August 2020 Iowa derecho.Support for this episode provided by Dekalb and FCC AgExpert.
Mary Ruth McDonald has always been interested in plants, which led her to the University of Guelph, the study of plant pathology, and an interest in crop protection. But it was a summer job as a pest management scout in Ontario's Holland Marsh that clarified what she wanted to do with those interests. Between her work as an OMAFRA pest management specialist and as a professor in the department of plant agriculture at the University of Guelph, McDonald has spent almost her entire career focusing on vegetable cropping in the unique agricultural production conditions of the Holland Marsh, acting as a bridge between research and application in the field. In this episode of AgAnnex Talks, McDonald, one of the 2022 Influential Women in Canadian Agriculture, speaks with Fruit and Vegetable and Top Crop Manager East editor Alex Barnard about trying new things, rolling with the punches and seeing research in action. https://annex.omeclk.com/portal/wts/uemcnr%7Cdqr%5EbaPo8ch38%5Ed3b8Bgb (IWCA) is a program created by the agricultural brands at Annex Business Media designed to recognize women who make a difference in Canada's ag industry and provide them with a platform to share their knowledge, triumphs and advice. Christoph utilizes his insight and experience with sustainability to explain how sustainability operates within our government and our communities, with a focus on sustainability for different breed of livestock.
It's said the first cut is the deepest – for forages, it's also the longest in terms of plant development and giving pesky insects the opportunity to snack on the growing crop. Christine O'Reilly, forage and grazing specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), discusses how the season is going so far in preparation for (or shortly after) the first cut for many forage farmers, as well as scouting and management tips for alfalfa weevil and potato leafhopper, the two major insect pests with which Ontario forage growers must contend. Cover crops are widely seen as a beneficial practice, with effects like improved soil health, weed management and erosion protection. They also require a little planning and knowledge to be successful. Kris McNaughton is a research technician at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus. She discusses the importance of forethought: termination of a cover crop, the crops that preceded and will follow in that field, and how herbicide use can affect the cover crop. Yvonne Lawley, a professor in the plant science department at the University of Manitoba, and Callum Morrison, a University of Manitoba PhD student, discuss a cover crop survey they conducted in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta in 2019 and the importance of considering the realities of your farm when deciding on cover crops.
