We had to ask about the red hair, does one get ridiculed or admired? Loreena McKennitt has a mass of beautiful red curls but is mostly admired for her music. When Mo thinks of her, she sees mists and magic and fairy tales. Loreena's sold more than 14 million albums and toured the world with her harp and her beloved band of fellow musicians. She's a singer, songwriter and composer with a new album full of early Celtic tunes called “The Road Back Home”, and is going on tour where she hopes the audience will sing along with her! Loreena's never had a manager and organizes the tours herself. She says the insurance during Covid was half a million dollars! We talk to her about the joys of touring and about being a privacy activist. Ok, that was our word, Loreena says she's not an activist, but she sure sounds like one, as she speaks about trying to make the world a better place. She was born in Morden, Manitoba and now lives in Stratford Ontario. You can watch the show on our YouTube page. You can grab a copy of the transcription on the episode page. Alexandra Evans joins us this week for an in person interview. Alex started her hospitality career over four decades ago in her teenage years working at a French café a few blocks from where she grew up in midtown Toronto. A few years later, Alex lied her way into a waitressing job at Toby's Goodeats - very popular burger chain in Toronto in the 1980's. Alex loved the late nights and fast cash and fast cameraderie that comes with working in the industry. Alex moved into Management at Toby's and in the early 90's joined the team at O'Tooles on Carlton St across from Maple Leaf Gardens and stayed for 3 years. Alex eventually moved on to work at a French bistro - Le Paradis - for over 12 years, then soon after got bitten by the wine bug. Alex started a wine class in 1999 that morphed into a Sommelier diploma by 2004. That diploma opened the door to a management job at Boba restaurant on Avenue Road then Celestin on Mount Pleasant. That in turn opened a bigger door to Scaramouche restaurant where she stayed for 10 years as Maitre d', Sommelier and server. Eventually, Alex retired from serving in 2019. Alex and her partner moved to Stratford Ontario in the summer of 2021 and started teaching wine and service at the Stratford Chefs School where she enjoys passing the torch to the younger generation. In March of 2022 Alex started working for Nicholas Pearce Wines as their sales representative for South West Ontario where she gets to interact and keep her foot in the door of the hospitality industry and be in bed by 10pm….. In Alex's own words "It's been a great gig!" GUEST OVERVIEW: John C. A. Manley has been writing speculative fiction since he was nine years old. In 2001, he married, moved out of Toronto into a small town, and began work as a freelance ghostwriter and copywriter; while penning short stories and collecting rejection slips from publishers. In 2018, he began writing his first full-length novel, an urban fantasy set in Stratford, Ontario; but when the first lockdown began in 2020, he put down that project to pen a short dystopian story about where he saw these so-called “public health” measures going. That short story grew into the full-length novel, Much Ado About Corona. John is currently working on the sequel, Brave New Normal, while living in Stratford Ontario, with his wife Nicole, and son Jonah.

Dan Moran joins the show this week. Currently, Dan is one of the co-owners of Red Rabbit in Stratford. This is part of a co-op style ownership group that also includes Old Man and Son, Pollo Morto and Somewhere a Sandwich which are all in Stratford Ontario. Dan was born and raised in Gananoque, Ontario - a border tourist town and subsequently got his start early in the service industry. In 1988, Dan moved to Waterloo Ontario to attend University of Waterloo and started working at the on campus bar - The Bombshelter Pub (The Bomber). Shortly thereafter, Dan started working for on campus concert promoter known as BEnt. In 1990, Dan temporarily left school to figure out his next move. Well, his next move involved moving to Whitehorse in the Yukon on a whim. While up north, Dan worked security, bartended and did sound for live concerts as well. Dan eventually returned to Kitchener-Waterloo and started working with BEnt once again as well as security at several clubs and live events. Eventually, Dan started got a job at Ethel's bartending when it opened in 1994. After a number of years at Ethel's, Dan got in to the ownership side of the business and opened up Frat Burger with several partners. This provided him with the foundation of business operations and mechanics of running an independent restaurant. Moving on from Frat Burger, Dan spent time working at Mercer in Stratford and the Duke of Wellington in Waterloo for several years. By this point, it was 2013 and Dan made one of the best decisions of his career and joined a staff-owned restaurant concept in Stratford that he has been a part of ever since. They opened up Red Rabbit that same year and haven't looked back. The ownership group subsequently opened Okazu in 2015, Old Man and Son in 2016 and Pollo Morto in early 2020 and Somewhere A Sandwich. www.redrabbitresto.com @redrabbitresto oldmanandson.com @oldmanandson www.pollomorta.com @pollomorta www.somewherearestaurant.com @somewherearestaurant

The London Free Press' Joe Belanger noted that “‘Infinite Sequels' is a brilliant, beautiful piece of theatre. Stone recites his poignant poetry with mostly subtle gesture, movement and animated face, asking us to face moments and questions about our lives we may not have even recognized.” In our conversation Stones admits his love of poetry goes back to his youth confessing that it was only later in life after his career and kids were no longer a pressing concern that he found the freedom to truly hone his work and share it publically. Supreme Court Upholds mandatory retirement for police. There was no question that Stratford Ontario police officer Albert Large had to retire at the age of 60; both the police board and his union had agreed on that. But Large regarded it as age discrimination, and took his case to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, which agreed. The city appealed, only to lose at two separate Ontario court levels. However, on October 19, 1995, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled against Large, saying the policy was valid under human rights legislation. According to the top court, most police work is strenuous, requiring young, fit candidates. If the force is peopled by too many older officers – who are typically at risk for cardiovascular disease and declining aerobic capacity – it puts strain on the department, which must scramble to create less strenuous positions. Darren Dumas aka Mista D is the lead singer in a Canadian band known as "the Salads". The Salads had some hype in the early 2000's with their hit "Get Loose". After several albums, tours and shows, the band is still together but not as busy as they were 10 years ago. All members of the band are still active in music and art to some capacity. Darren is presently back in his home town of Stratford Ontario working as a graphic designer and singer in his Bob Marley tribute act "Mob Barley & the Railers". Darren is the same positive guy I met way back then and it's inspiring to see his unwavering love of music and art. One in a million!! In the podcast, we talk about his band being in the industry when it was almost dead. We talk about life and the future of music.
