Three fellas from North Dakota talk about how to consume media in healthy way as Catholics
This week, we're talking about the Netflix Fantasy series "The Dragon Prince." Generally speaking, I like the humor in the show, but the coy jokes about things that have a name in real life and they subvert that by making up a different obtuse name for the thing, like coffee for example, is stupid and annoying and I hate it. Merry Christmas from the Palladian Papist crew! This is our Christmas Special and 150th episode celebration rolled into one. It's about as chaotic as your local breakfast and disaster scale reference establishment if you live in the south, so buckle up for some arguably excessive merrymaking and speculation about the suspicious death of Santa Clause in a certain Tim Allen film. Ultimately, we do end up talking about Netflix's 2019 Christmas film "Klaus." You would not believe these guys They go through space in a Firefly And picked a girl who was asleep Turn's out she's not all there, and the cops chase her everywhere The crew's kinda rude but they kinda like here there Ok I'm going to be honest that's about as far as I can take that. I'm not Weird Al, get off my back. Anyway, here's Firefly. (00:00) Intro/Banter (15:50) Super Serial: Firefly (30:00) Cool Stuff/Themes/What we liked (44:15) Transcendental Analysis
Bruh, have you listened to any nu metal recently? I got Quiznos subs in the back seat of my Saturn so I should get a move on. Anyway, here's our episode on The Matrix. Intro/Banter (00:00) Philmosophical: The Matrix Summary (15:31) Cool Stuff/What we Liked (26:24) Transcendental Analysis (51:36)
The woke mob is after me. Guys these days can't just give flowers to the gal they like and live a happy life, gotta be fighting giant broccoli spirits or talking to aliens and crap. We've got Mob Psycho follow up (first follow up episode from something we've discussed? IDK) with our discussion of Season 3. Yep, we're back from yet another hiatus, from which we surely shall never ever go on another one, ever, at all, positively not. If we did, which we certainly will not, but if we did (but we won't), it wouldn't be when our lives get crazy again, which it won't, because we won't and it won't. ....Oh yeah, Horizon Zero Dawn, enjoy. Disclaimer, Adrien Brody DOES NOT star in Steven Spielberg's 1975 classic film "Jaws" as the well-meaning police chief of an island tourist town trying to prevent needless death. Nor does his character have the first name Adrien. Just want to make that clear. If he did, which he certainly does not, that'd be wild. But it isn't. Because he's not. That's right baby, a real, honest-to-goodness Saltcast from your boys, we're talking about why movies and shows aren't original or unique or creatively interesting these days. And we do manage to put our own spin on it, believe it or not. Because saying the same things that everyone else says to get in on what's popular would drastically undercut what it is we're trying to say now wouldn't it. Surprising lack of vampires when you think about it. Gothic architecture, British accents, and lots of the fluid we need to keep us alive, and it all happens at night. Missed opportunity maybe? I dunno, I never cared for vampires much anyway. We discuss From Software's "Bloodborne" in today's episode. LISAN AL GAIB! THE SHAI HULUD FEELS A LITTLE SCARED IN SOCIAL SETTINGS! SHY HULUD. Ok, got that out of my system. Amidst this dreary psychotic desert of suitable content for your ears (or eyes), come find an oasis of auditory (and visual depending on the medium) sights and sounds sure to stir up your religious fervor and rally you to join forces under the banner your local skinny white boy from another planet and shake up the drug sandbox that isn't the American Southwest this time to overthrow the forces of evil in this week's episode about Denis Villenueve's "Dune", part one and two. Da Vinci Resolve, if your life had a face I would punch it. This was a rough one to edit for some reason, just lots of little glitches and issues. Idk why. But you're here for the Spotify version aren't you? You are? Cool. Thanks for being here. Scott Pilgrim doesn't stick around long to kick off Netflix's animated "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" in today's episode. Seriously Da Vinci Resolve what the heck did I ever do to you? CCC Cartoons, coming to a church basement half-assed kids' play area with a tube tv on a wheeled cart near you! I will say, at least the animation was ok to passable, unlike the bizarre flash cartoon of Leif Erickson I got from the library once as a kid. I will say though, the part of that cartoon that is the most annoying to me is the crappy and nearly nonexistent lip sync on that. I guess I have high standards for the way animated characters are animated speaking. Speaking of high standards, we're talking about a cold war thriller Bridge of Spies. If you're ever beset by a pugilistic and diminutive chicken-like creature with a penchant for late 90's space operas, know that at least we've combined those thoughts together into one podcast episode banter session. This podcast is a return to topic discussion, namely a Saltcast about the genre of Dark Fantasy and how it is seldom done well. (00:00) Intro/Banter (17:25) Saltcast: Dark Fantasy discussion
Thomas Cruise is Thomas Cruising for a Bruising as he relives the same day over and over and over again trying to fight them aliens. Those dirty aliens keep changing the time to rig the game in their favor. We can't stand for it. And neither could Thomas Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow." We happened to unintentionally record this the day before Groundhog Day, so make of that what you will. Look, I'm going to level with you guys, this one runs a little long so I'm going to write a shorter description this time, you're welcome. Bit of a Christmas special for you guys, we're comparing and contrasting the stories of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" in its various (mostly the Muppets) adaptations, and "It's A Wonderful Life." So, enjoy the Christmas season with your families, push a muppet off a window ledge, crash your car into a tree and come back from a supernatural experience being glad that it happened, and maybe give another shovel full of that nice, clean coal to your bookkeepers this year. Merry Christmas! (00:00) Intro/Banter (5:30) The part where we figure out Nathan's microphone isn't turned on (17:00) Philmosophical
My desire to make thing stems from what 5-year-old me considered to be the peak of comedy: flash cartoons lampooning the dictator of Iraq and a certain famous terrorist leader in the early 2000's.Those and my older brothers making goofy videos caused me to want to make my own goofy stuff. I tried making stick figure cartoons in Microsoft Paint, stop motion cartoons with legos, and finally sketch videos in college, to now podcasts. Needless to say, content creation has been on my mind basically for the life cycle of the modern internet, and we're talking about it today on the podcast. (00:00) Intro/Banter (16:05) Saltcast/Topic: Content Creation
Yeah, I put friggin Scared Kirby on the thumbnail. Sure it's not a multiplayer game, who asked you, nerd? Narc? Whatcha going to do? Call the niche podcast thumbnail police? File a report of a violation of gamer code 420 that I didn't do my gamer homework and published a non-related picture on my own dang podcast thumbnail? Deal with it, I think Scared Kirby looks funny. Different sort of podcast this week, we're discussing multiplayer games and why many iterations these days don't quite suit our fancy (Mainly Reilly) (0:00) Banter, Grommit's clay (17:30) Saltcast Warning, Topic
Unlike the series, we're going to try and be concise and end things in a prompt enough fashion. Long story short, after lots of tall boys get killed by short kings who in turn were getting squished by the tall boys, Mikasa chops Eren's head off and cries uwu, and ultimately the short kings win out. Except they merely live to die another day in another war against another enemy facing complete destruction or whatever. You wouldn't steal a book would you? Apparently this girl does like all the time and she's celebrated for it. How backwards is that? Like, the first time, she can't even read, steals a book, and learns how to read with it. That'd be like if I stole a car and learned how to drive with it and then was celebrated as a monumental achievement under difficult circumstances. Whatever. I think I got the order of our pre-recorded episodes correctly, the timeline in my head for the last month of podcasting is all kinds of screwed up so enjoy our podcast on The Book Thief I guess. ======== Timestamps ========== (00:00) Banter (15:55) Synopsis (27:11) Cool Stuff (45:15) Transcendental Analysis
Bag. You betcha. Hotdish. Hockey. Oh fer sure. Watch out for deer. Gotta go put da boat in da lake. Boat Show at the Fargodome. How's it goin der? Gettin tired of my just listing things off that Minnesotans say huh? Yeah, this here's the Palladian Papists episode on the Coen brothers' "Fargo." Ok, Minnesota nice turned off for a second. You dirty dogs mocked us for decades for our quaint little accents in our weird frozen backcountry tundra, and it tooked a film named after a town in North Dakota mostly filmed in Canada and takes place largely in the Twin Cities for you to pay attention to us huh? A grisly murder mystery to grab your MSG addled brain's attention. And you'll go back to not giving two darns about Minnesota when you're done here I bet. Fer shame. I'm turning the nice back on now. Watch out for deer now ok on your way home all right? I didn't forget to upload this episode a week ago, shut up. Except for the banter and random updates we have about our lives I'll have you know that our content constitutes what we call in the podcast biz "evergreen content", meaning stuff that isn't topical and time-sensitive, so there. This week's episode is on the League of Legends series on Netflix "Arcane." (00:00) Banter (12:45) Introduction (42:20) Cool Stuff (55:20) Transcendental Analysis
Ok, I'll give a little bit of explanation on this thumbnail because I'm insecure in my choice and feel the need to justify it to you. I thought I'd do a silly image of the Rebels from Star Wars Battlefront II but not the the new one, the old one. I couldn't find any good ones though so I settled for this picture from the new Star Wars Battle Front II which really should be Battlefront IV but here we are. The reason I wanted to show the rebel characters in Star Wars Battlefront II (the old one) is because they're kind of a**holes in the game and we're kinda crapping on the trope of Rebel = Good Guy so I thought I'd throw those guys under the bus, but now I'm just rambling. (00:00) Banter (13:20) Introduction (14:13) Topic
I often feel bad because whenever there's coffee and donuts, a veritable institution and mainstay of the American Church, I never have cash on me to put into the free will offering basket. I guess I repay my debt by producing a podcast for free. Or something. Is this a service to the Church? I dunno man. I'm just gonna keep plugging away at this. Haha, got vulnerable there, just like a certain little Matt Damon did with Robin Williams in the film "Good Will Hunting." We're back again. Again. However many breaks we've taken, whatever. Enjoy it while it lasts folks because goodness knows how long or when the next hiatus will be. Regardless, in this episode we're talking about the true story of Bl. Franz Jägerstätter as portrayed in the film "A Hidden Life." BUT NOW YOU'RE a BURNIN the SPAGHETTI. Testing, testing, 1,2,3? Had to do that . It's episode 123 of the podcast for crying out loud. Enjoy this first episode after hiatus. Will it be immediately followed by another one? Hopefully not. In the meantime however, enjoy our discussion of La La Land. Also, if you get the riddle wrong, the penguin mafia (not Colin Farrell) will come to your house. So think wisely.
Another podcast for ye. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! This episode on "Super 8" has nothing to do with Thanksgiving or cheap motels. Well, I suppose you could draw some correlation to cheap motels. This film is made to look like it has a 70's vibe, and a lot of motels were built in the 70's and 80's or whatever and haven't updated much so they still kinda carry that general aesthetic. Speaking of aesthetics, there are few aesthetics that just make me generally uncomfortable as Alf. Frickin creeps me out. I can't put a finger on it, but Alf is just an unseemly looking character. Like a rotten roll of shag carpet in your grandma's basement that nobody wants to touch because it was ripped up in like 1978 and it's been there for too long and it's kind of a fixture of the place and an eyesore....
Little pun for the WWII nerds out there. If you know, you know. Exciting episode for a few reasons. 1. We're back (ish) 2. I finally fixed the dang Philmosophical bumper so it's not so hard on the ears 3. we drop some thoughts on the Rings of Power (current event commentary sellouts? Not so fast.) 4. we review a fantastic yet sobering movie about the true story of Desmond Doss: "Hacksaw Ridge." Also, Halloween release day. I don't care. Halloween is for kids, adults who refuse to grow up, and emos. There, I said it. The truth hurts. Be a Christmas enjoyer like a normal person. But not too early. You know who you are.
Deal with it, John. We watched Thor 4 and kinda liked it. That aside, it's not as if we have a gap in episodes because a certain editor had a brain fart and completely forgot to try and upload the episode or anything for an entire week. That'd be crazy. Almost as crazy as the fact Thor: Love and Thunder isn't trash.
The internet drives people to do crazy things. Or, rather, the desire for real human connection drives people to do crazy things. Like take an unannounced break from your podcast for several weeks, or think everyone around you is an animal and accidentally uncover several conspiracy theories in the process. You know, like you do. In this week's topic, Odd Taxi.
THE NATIONAL SALTCAST SERVICE HAS ISSUED A WARNING FOR INCREASED LEVELS OF SALT IN YOUR PALLADIAN PAPISTS PODCAST. THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS, IT'S THE LONG-AWAITED DEBUT OF THE SALTCAST BUMPER. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT, WE'RE GETTING SALTY ABOUT A FEW DIFFERENT THINGS AND STARTING A NEW FORMAT. AND YES, FAITH WAS OK WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT, WE CHECKED.
Indoctrination and propaganda are some serious business. You wouldn't expect heavy subject matter and comedy to mix, but yet somehow in Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit" they blend in a rather thought-provoking way. See, I can write more serious descriptions.
If you ain't got no radio, you can still listen to this here iPod Broadcast on any of them newfangled devices you so please to make use of in this fine country, I do tell you hwat boah. Now iff'n you desire to satiate and dare I say - I do dare say, ingratiate yo self - I say here now listen to this episode of the Palladian Papists as they discuss gopher and those cinematic masterminds the Coen brothers themselves, yessah, the Coen bothers I say, and their just dandy and sophisticated motion picture - with sound mind you, a bona fide talkie, "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?"
We're rekindling the flame of the Dark Souls [Dank Sus (Patent pending){just kidding...unless...?}] universe in this week's discussion of Dark Souls III. I had to go back and re-listen to this episode a bunch because I didn't want the title and the joke in the bit to be conflicting. That's just the level of effort I put into this pod for the 2 of you. Be grateful. Or not. Do what you want. But if you want me to like you...
There. That's the title. I hope you're happy Nathan. Actually, overall, I was happy to see Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan again, not gonna lie. My question is how on earth or Tatooine for that matter he cooks that giant fish meat or whatever that stuff is that's definitely not rubber, so shut up, to where it's edible. Is it an animal? A fish? Sand seal a la Breath of the Wild? 0/10, unanswered meat questions.
Nathan's birthday has come and gone as of the uploading of this video, so he gets to talk about video games and one of his favorite things at that. Axiom Verge. Which brings up a lot of questions, like are we truly conscious people popping from reality to reality or are we just pixelated brains being stimulated in a digital jar? No joke, Reilly and I both said that absentmindedly and half-awake said it out loud at the same time while lifting weights early in the morning in college, minus the pixelated part but the original quote whatever it is if you follow me.
Run. We're reviewing Demon Slayer. Bada bing, bada boom, skippidy bop mmmmmdada, here we go. Can't think of much of a description this week. Deal with it.
It's our eleventy-first episode! We don't remember half as many bits as we would like, and like less than half of them half as much as they deserve. Anyway, we talk not about Lord of the Rings, but "Megamind" by Dreamworks.
The Benedict that produces the eggs is probably from the same farm where chocolate cows produce the chocolate milk. The Cumberbatch. What doesn't involve farms whatsoever (or eggs really) is the Disney Plus series "The Mysterious Benedict Society."
We bucked the Podcast Formula (rated E for everyone) by accident so Future James (Rated M) (TM) had to backtrack and do a little bit of cleanup. Speaking of a lot of cleanup and attempted government coverup, we review Brad Bird's animated feature "The Iron Giant" in this week's episode.
In the next installment of our unofficial COMM 101 we're going to talk about public speaking, particularly of the royal variety. Watch a head of state ascend to a state of leadership and overcome a speech impediment to unite a country in the face of great struggle. Successfully. Ahem. In "The King's Speech."
Good morning class. I know you're all probably hammered and hungover but it's time for your COMM 101 class. Yes, 10 out of the 100 students are actually still showing up for class, and I've barely even presented any new information since I handed out the syllabus months ago. I'll cut you guys a break. Let's just watch and discuss Arrival in our class today. That good? Good. No you don't get extra credit for being here.
Inside you, there are (at least) two Oscar Isaacs. Which one dominates your life depends upon which one you feed. But if you manage to get the two of them to get along then a more murderous one will manifest and silently assassinate the cheesy metaphor in the back of a limo while dead birdman watches. That's right, we're talking about Moon Knight on Disney Plus.
We're talking about Fr. Stu. No we're not bandwagoning on a popular-in-the-Catholic-sphere-right-now movie trends and stuff, shut up. Mark Wahlberg didn't give us an advanced copy to review and interview him unlike some people, ahem. But yeah, John talks to us about Fr. Stu because he's seen it.
It's the 60's. Make of that what you will. Self discovery, Russians, profligacy whatever that means and 1 like = 1 box top to educate a poor child with one whole slice of cardboard. That's right, it's "The Queen's Gambit."
Don't worry it's not what you think. Unless what you think of is an existential crisis war by humanity against an alien race forcing children to undergo training to become strategic masterminds to gain the upper hand in said war, then yeah, you got it right. Good job. We're talking about Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game."
You see that there green thing? That's a lawn. And Clint Eastwood would really, really, really, really, politely as evidenced by the gun, like you to do the opposite of being on it. This week's episode is on Clint Eastwood's la- ahem- film, "Gran Torino."
