LAMP Club is postponed a week because John Erwin, director of "Jesus Revolution", is coming on the SASF pod next week to discuss the movie himself! So in the meantime: You might remember that Nate had thrown out some reckless bait about Breaking Bad. A few bold listeners pushed back: Surely Breaking Bad isn't so very Bad, is it? The guys dig into the nuts and bolts of Christian artistic appreciation: the responsorial tier (what does the audience do with what they've watched), the aesthetic tier (how well or poorly is it made), and the objective tier (does God like it). You'll find such a system of criticism maps perfectly onto the classical trifecta of the true, the good, and the beautiful. So how does that apply to Breaking Bad? Listen to find out. Hint: It doesn't look like hosting a Breaking Bad party with rock candy in place of meth, as some Christians have done. The guys also discuss the next LAMP Club pick, which will be Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit." #StoriesAreSoulFood #sasf #BreakingBad #JojoRabbit
Indoctrination and propaganda are some serious business. You wouldn't expect heavy subject matter and comedy to mix, but yet somehow in Taika Waititi's "Jojo Rabbit" they blend in a rather thought-provoking way. See, I can write more serious descriptions.

Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, a comedy-drama satire about a young boy in Hitler's Youth toward the end of WW2, features some truly dark humor, but does it go too far? Anthony and Mark make arguments for both sides. Note: This episode was recorded during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, and as a result we heavily discuss the event and the content gets pretty political. We still appreciate your thoughts and opinions you may have on the matter. 0:00-Intro 0:26-Opening Banter (Afghanistan withdrawal) 18:09-Pro Argument 43:54-Con Argument 1:05:00–Closing

When Nazi youth member Johannes discovers a Jewish girl hiding in the walls of his house, he is mysteriously drawn to her and when the end of World War II threatens to take her from his life, he lies and tells her Germany won and she has to stay in hiding, stay with him. These are some of the dark turns left out of Taika Waititi's JoJo Rabbit, an adaptation of Christine Leunens' book Caging Skies. Joe is joined by Tyler Pistorius to break down the adaptation of Leunens' book and the vastly different take on the story Waititi brought to life. This is the most conflicted episode I've ever had to give, nevertheless I gotta truck on. It's in the spirit of Jojo Rabbit regardless.
Scott Derrickson has quit Doctor Strange 2 (Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness), Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes and Ricky Gervais gave Hollywood's celebrities a bit of a telling off. Plus, I review Sam Mendes' 1917, Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, and do my best and worst film and TV shows lists of 2019. So sit back and enjoy the first episode of Small Screen Stories in 2020. Me-OW! It's the end of the year and just as we were preparing our Best & Worst of 2019 list, we had a couple of late entrants into both categories. Before we get into what elevated and sank the mood in 2019 (they're not necessarily the worst films, we're just very disappointed), Jonathan Roberts and Cheow Sue-Ann delve into some current releases – Tom Hooper's take on Cats and Taika Waititi's boy-with-Hitler-as-a-best-friend war movie, Jojo Rabbit. Skip to theses times for the different segments. 01.00: Everything wrong with Tom Hooper's Cats – a film that has gone so wrong that it deserves to be seen. 10.40: Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit – a film so good it's effectively the best film of 2019 (according to Jonathan) 15.00: Best & Worst of 2019. Joker, Parasite, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Aladdin, Lion King, Us, Marriage Story – listen on to find out where they rank. Thanks for listening and here's to amazing films in 2020. On this week's episode, we see out 2019 with Greta Gerwig's Little Women, and we welcome in 2020 with Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit. In Little Women, Greta Gerwig couldn't have chosen a more beloved classic to adapt for her second feature as director, matched only by the strength of cast she's corralled. Playing the four leads on the verge of womanhood are Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Sharp Objects' Eliza Scanlen. Telling the tale of four daughters of a preacher in post-Civil War Massachusetts as they learn to love and live their own lives, this adaptation emphasises the novel's feminist message of self-determination.Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit shouldn't work, but the director pulls it off with panache. Never less than extremely funny, Waititi's performance as a cracked Adolf Hitler manages to easily overleap any questions of taste, backed up by a hilarious cadre of supporting Nazis (Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson and Alfie Allen). This anti-hate satire from the director of Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok will win you over.Plus, Curzon bring you a Christmas Day treat: you can watch Mikhaël Hers' Amanda on Curzon Home Cinema from 25th December, over a week before it arrives in cinemas.Follow the team on Social Media:@jakehcunningham - Jake@samhowlett_1 - Sam@ks_powell - Kelly@ella_kemp - EllaProduced by Jake CunninghamEdited by Mark Towers Hosted on Acast. Seeing & Believing wades into Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit, set in Nazi Germany, and The Lighthouse, from the director of the The Witch.
Hey there! We are your imaginary friends bringing you a non-imaginary episode full of laughing and crying. We have the news about Batman casting (Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman!), Netflix leasing theatres to show its movies in so they can make an Oscar run, and John Cho injured his knee on the set of Cowboy Bebop. Recently, Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit was released making it our Recent Review, recently. We caught that sucker and interrogated it to the full extent of movie critic law. Find out if it passed or was executed by firing squad. Even rabbits aren't safe from us. We missed a week so our would-be Recent Review for our failed episode, Bong Joon Ho's Parasite is our Try This for Try This, Not That. We so wanted to dive into this with you. We have failed you. We won't let it happen again. Please don't hurt us. Our long-winded Topic Discussion is about more seasoned director folk taking a huge cookie all over people's hopes and dreams. Stop it, old people. Let us Millenials ruin our lives in peace. Our Geriatric Cinematic is Top Secret! No really. We're telling you. It's Top Secret! That's the title. None of that "Who's On First" stuff. We had some fun with this one. We always do but this one in particular aged like fine wine. Or cheese. Or things that age well. Charlie Chaplin lampooning Hitler's bombast and fragility in “The Great Dictator” (1940) marked one of film comedy's all-time “truth to power” moments. But 80 years after WWII, how best to laugh at fascists when they seldom don the brownshirt? With the release of Taika Waititi's “Jojo Rabbit”—a would-be charming comedy about a Hitler youth whose imaginary friend is der Führer—Chance and Noah ask themselves why, how, and when skewered Nazis are funny. After reviewing “Jojo,” Chance and Noah duck back to “The Producers” (1967) and “Top Secret!” (1984) to examine how Nazis became a source of irony and camp for filmmakers like Mel Brooks and the ZAZ trio. As always—down with Hitler; all the way down. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message
