Home renovations can be an exciting time and can transform your home into the dream space you've always wanted. Yet, behind every successful renovation project lies the complex, and sometimes daunting, process of getting building permits. These permits not only ensure that your project adheres to local codes and regulations, but they also protect both the homeowner and contractor from potential legal and safety issues. Luckily for you, here at Big Fish, we know the ins and outs of building permits and we have our permit expert, Kelsey Kasten, to talk all about what goes on with them. Together, we chat through the basics of permits, including what kinds of projects typically require a permit, how skipping this step of getting a permit can get you into trouble, and how permit requirements can vary depending on where you live. We also discuss when and how to know when you should pull a permit, and what the inspection process looks like, so you never get caught off guard mid-project. If dealing with permits leaves you overwhelmed, don't worry because that's where we come in. At Big Fish we take care of all the behind-the-scenes logistics so you get to focus on the exciting parts of your reno! If you haven't heard of the term “ice damming” before, you've probably at least experienced it because it's a common issue many homeowners face during the winter months. Basically, ice damming occurs when heat is lost from the house, causing snow on the roof to melt and then refreeze at the gutter line, which is unheated. Ice damming is typically a concern once the water starts to infiltrate the interior of a house. While this can be a huge concern for homeowners, it's important to remember that ice damming, while inconvenient, is not a life-threatening emergency. It is fixable. During this episode, we are sharing both short-term and long-term solutions, including roof raking, using calcium, and using EdgeMelt which is a heat cable system. And if you're looking to prevent ice damming, feel free to give us a call. We will come out to your property and evaluate any kind of ice damming that's occurring, and we also do a lot to help minimize the risk of any sort of leaking in the future. In this episode, we chat about: What ice damming is Why it happens and where it typically occurs Solutions to ice damming, both long-term and short-term How we can help minimize ice damming occurring in the future To connect with Big Fish Contracting, you can check out our website at www.bigfishcontracting.com.
