LBG Wayne Motts and historian Zackery Fry join me for an Ask A Guide about Hall's Brigade during the battle of Gettysburg. From the Monument: July 2. Took position on the line at the left of Second Brigade and of the copse of trees. The 19th Mass. and 42d New York were late in the day advanced to support Second Division Third Corps but retired on Second Division being forced back. The Brigade was attacked by Brig. Gen. Wright's Brigade which overrun Battery A 1st Rhode Island then in advance but was repulsed with heavy loss and forced beyond the Emmitsburg Road. July 3. Remained in position. At 3 P. M. Longstreet's assault was made after a cannonade of two hours. The Brigade and the Second Brigade received the charge of Major Gen. Pickett's Division which was repulsed with great loss in killed wounded prisoners and flags. In this engagement the First Brigade and the other troops were rushed to support of the two Brigades engaged and contributed to the victory. The Brigade remained in its position until the close of the battle. Today's guest, Jason, has always felt a bit unique as a dad. Early in their marriage, Jason and his wife decided that when they had children, he would be the stay-at-home parent. I was actually surprised to learn that 1 in 5 stay-at-home parents are now stay-at-home dads. What makes Jason's story more unique, however, is that both of his children had special needs. When someone is the primary caregiver of a special needs child, it often becomes a huge part of their identity so when their child dies, a part of them feels like it dies as well.   When Jason's son, Zachary, unexpectedly died of sepsis, Jason suddenly felt alone. Like many of the moms of special needs children whom I have interviewed over the past year, Jason felt very isolated. Jason turned to social media to find others who were suffering the same pain and grief. He longed to find other dads to talk with, but couldn't seem to find any. He became involved in many Facebook groups and found that he would be one of the only men who would regularly contribute.   On the advice of a therapist, Jason began to write out his feelings. They were raw and unfiltered letters to his son, Zachery. He imagined that someday he would simply throw them out, but instead decided to ask to post them on a bereaved parent's Facebook page. The feedback he received was so overwhelming that he eventually decided to make his own social media accounts. He entitled his Facebook page 'Letters to Zachary.'   Jason's 'Letters to Zachary' Facebook page now has almost 1000 followers. He says that his purpose is two-fold. First, he wants to show other bereaved dads that it is not only ok but good to open up and share the feelings that they have related to grief and loss. The second purpose is to give women some insight into the mind of a bereaved dad. He hopes that his sharing may help women understand the grieving men in their lives just a little bit better. Hopefully, the discussions that Jason starts can help couples better understand each other as they grieve together.

Zach's practice often focuses on work with individuals navigating their 20's-30's, male psychology, and anyone looking to explore identity. He believes that the foundation of his work with clients in therapy is based in offering them a relationship in which they can feel genuinely safe to trust that they can be seen and understood. He has worked in a variety of clinical settings and with diverse client populations which has highlighted his strength in his humanistic, relational approach toward inviting clients into the healing work that awaits them. He is often working from a psychodynamic and feminist lens to conceptualize and hold space for the “whole person” and their various intersectional identities, but usually tends to bring the work back to the here and now, through a warm, yet direct approach, as he and his client move toward further insight and mindfulness. Zach has a passion for working with clients exploring their values and identity as they learn how to engage life in the most congruent way for them. This is often what comes up in his work with navigating 20's and 30's and at times even more specifically with his work with men as we explore intimacy, masculinity, and self-esteem. He is also passionate about his work with attachment and relationships, inner-child processing, as well as understanding family system dynamics and role expectations.
