To some, Lent can often seem like an empty ritual. But author of The Good of Giving Up, Aaron Damiani will discuss on Wednesday’s Mornings with Eric and Brigitte what he came to find, and what he describes as something else entirely. Lent has been described as a "springtime for the soul," a season of clearing to make room for growth. Damiani calls this something exceedingly good. We're back! This season we're focusing on worship, particularly worship that is transformative. Our season long guest is Rory Noland and we will be working with his book, Transforming Worship: Planning and Leading Sunday Services as If Spiritual Formation Mattered. In addition to Ruth and Rory, we will also be bringing other guests into the conversations about worship with spiritual formation at its core. This season is for all who worship, not just pastors and leaders who plan the weekly services! In today's episode Ruth and Rory are joined by Aaron Damiani, an Anglican pastor, to discuss the worship practice of Communion. Ruth and Rory share about their own painful experiences trying to celebrate the eucharist across denominations in the early days of Transforming Community and the three talk about how to wade into the places of tension the Lord's table can hold. They also tackle why the eucharist is an important part of transforming worship and how to make communion transformative if it's become a rote practice. Aaron Damiani serves as the Rector (Lead Pastor) of Immanuel Anglican Church in Chicago and is the author of The Good of Giving Up: Discovering the Freedom of Lent (Moody, 2017) and Earth Filled With Heaven: Finding Life in Liturgy, Sacraments, and other Ancient Practices of the Church (Moody, 2022). How is it that Easter sneaks up on us every year? Or maybe it doesn't sneak up on you, but your heart never feels quite prepared to celebrate the most amazing of miracles. Somehow it just feels like another Sunday with nicer clothes and better music. This is what Lent is for. Forty days set aside to help us prepare our hearts for Easter. Aaron Damiani, pastor, and author of The Good of Giving Up: Discovering the Freedom of Lent, stumbled into practicing Lent years ago. He may have started with a half-hearted fast, but he quickly noticed his new church community was all in for Lent. He saw them not practicing Lent out of obligation but with hearts full of joy – especially on Easter. Join Aaron and me as we discuss all things Lent: where it came from, how to practice it, and why we should try it. Some highlights from our conversation: Where did Lent come from? While we don't see Lent explicitly spelled out in Scripture, history tells us the very earliest followers of Jesus started with a communal overnight fast to mark the anniversary of Easter. This grew into what we now recognize as Lent. The three main practices in Lent are: fasting, prayer and almsgiving (generosity) Aaron tells us about his first Lent – and how it became a meaningful part of his journey with Jesus. We talked about what Aaron is giving up this year for Lent – and how you can discover what God might be inviting you to fast from for this season. Do you feel resistance to Lent? Aaron and I discuss this and he has some wise and pastoral words for us. Finally, Aaron prays over us. Here are the words he prayed written by Pastor Thomas Kramer: Heavenly Father, You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. So, look with compassion upon the heartfelt desires of your servants and purify our disordered affections that we may behold your eternal glory in the face of Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)
Download your free Lent Journal here. Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit, where he fasted for 40 days. Then, in Jesus' hunger and physical weakness, the enemy showed up to test him and tempt him. How did Jesus stay strong? And what can we learn from the encounter? Jesus turned to God in dependence, reminded himself (and his enemy) of what was true, and did the next right thing. He passed the enemy's test with flying colors. Lent, 40 days that mimic these 40 days of fasting by Jesus, helps us turn away from the things that comfort us to depend more fully on God. As you meditate on Matthew 4, allow the Spirit to help you notice something from these words that applies to your own life. Once you've listened to this Scripture Experience podcast, head over to the next episode and listen to the interview with pastor and author Aaron Damiani. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, on Karl and Crew Mornings, we continued our weekly theme: "Bold Steps", and we discussed biblical confession of sin. Understanding true confession is critical to our relationship with Jesus. What is the 10% factor of confession? How can churches incorporate confession biblically and effectively? Consider just three things confession of sin produces in our lives: 1. Healing – James 5:16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 2. Cleansing – I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 3. Mercy/Prosperity – Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Today's special guest was author Aaron Damiani who is the lead pastor of Immanuel Anglican Church in Chicago. He shared how sin and shame of not confessing can keep us from loving relationships. Confession is a discipline, not a ritual. There's joy and relief in confession. His latest book is called, "Earth Filled With Heaven: Finding Life in Liturgy, Sacraments, and other Ancient Practices of the Church". Our guest today, Aaron Damiani, author of the book, Earth Filled with Heaven: Finding Life in Liturgy, Sacraments, and Other Ancient Practices of the Church will explore how the practices of the ancient church, such as liturgy, creeds, and the public reading of Scripture can help modern Christians rest in the stability and truth of Jesus Christ “who is the same yesterday, today and forever.” He will discuss with us how the peace of these practices gave way to courage and missional living in the early church, which faced the same level of upheaval that we have today.Coffee and Bible Time Prayer Journal - https://www.coffeeandbibletime.com/product-page/prayer-journalCoffee and Bible Time Prayer Binder - https://www.coffeeandbibletime.com/product-page/prayer-binderCoffee and Bible Time Courses - https://www.coffeeandbibletime.com/coursesBook - https://amzn.to/3Wo9Hd3IG - @damiani6: https://coffeeandbibletime.hopp.to/instagram10FB: https://coffeeandbibletime.hopp.to/facebook3Bible – Pastors ESV Bible: https://amzn.to/3Nr0rAEPen: https://amzn.to/3gXa7XrJournal: https://amzn.to/3sPw5hRFavorite App: https://coffeeandbibletime.hopp.to/accordanceDaily Prayer Website: https://coffeeandbibletime.hopp.to/the-daily-office-%7C-morning-and-evening-prayer-according-to-the-book-of-common-prayer-(2019)

Growing up, my experience going to church was in a contemporary building, with modern music and culture. But occasionally...I would visit a different kind of church with a friend and there, I was exposed to ancient rituals, rhythms, and sacraments that drew me in and touched my heart. Join me for a warm, rich conversation with Aaron Damiani. Aaron is the lead pastor of Immanuel Anglican Church in Chicago, and the author of Earth Filled With Heaven: Finding Life in Liturgy, Sacraments, and other Ancient Practices of the Church. Aaron invites us to discover how these historical practices of the early church can nourish our spiritual lives and be a beautiful way to connect with God and community. If your spirit is longing for new ways to go deeper in your relationship with Jesus, the answer just may be... rediscovering the old ways.

The death of Queen Elizabeth has many wondering about the future of Christianity in the UK. The Queen was outspoken about her faith in Jesus Christ, but how will King Charles change what it means for the monarch to be the “Defender of the Faith”? We all know evangelicals are divided by politics, but a new report by Catholic bishops says Roman Catholics are too. What can we learn from one another? Poverty among kids in the U.S. has declined dramatically in recent decades. Liberals say it's the result of government programs. Conservative credit economic growth. Who is right? Then, Anglican pastor Aaron Damiani talks with Skye about his journey from megachurch burnout to life-giving liturgy. His new book, “Earth Filled with Heaven,” is written to Christians skeptical about tradition, rituals, and sacraments, but they might be the key to saving evangelicalism from itself. Plus, why you shouldn't drink coffee before shopping or trust ads featuring dogs.
