First on Scene, Last to Heal: Emergency Workers and Fatal Collisions goes behind the scenes with the men and women of An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service and the fire service as they share stories about fatal collisions on Ireland's roads, and how that impacts their way of thinking. Produced and presented by Alex Rowley, a young journalism student from Wicklow and IMRO-nominated broadcaster, it's inspired by the contrasting ways different members of the emergency services deal with their trauma. Some choose to open up to friends, while for others, it's as if nothing bothers them.Due to a spike in road deaths in recent years, the topic has been high up in the news agenda, and rightly so, but every bank holiday we hear appeals from high-ranking Gardaí, Government Ministers and the RSA. Rarely, do we hear from those who actually deal with these collisions and see the devastation firsthand. In the documentary, Paramedics Clodagh Murphy and Paul Malone, based in Waterford, tell us about the trends they see in responding to collisions and why they're always keeping their own family members in the back of their mind. The documentary also goes on patrol with Gardaí Leanne McCarthy and Ken Driscoll of the Roads Policing Unit in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Ken bravely opens up about how it feels to break the news of a death to a family, comparing it to handing someone an “explosive device”.We also speak with Sub-Officer Stephen Connolly from Monasterevin Fire Brigade in Co. Kildare, who speaks of the challenges faced by on-call emergency workers, who service their local community first and foremost. All emergency workers in the documentary have pleaded with people to put down their mobile phones, put on their seatbelts, follow speed limits, and not take drugs or alcohol when using the roads this Bank Holiday Weekend.Analysis from Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Malie Coyne, contextualises the issue, and further hammers home the importance of looking out for our frontline workers.

Limerick Gift Card goes live in the city and county

A new Limerick Gift Card has launched as part of efforts to support local businesses by locking in spending and attracting new spending to the county. Backed by Limerick City and County Council and Limerick Chamber, the gift card is available as either a physical gift card or an e-card that can be added to digital wallets. Cards can be spent in the city and surrounding towns, including Newcastle West, Adare, Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock and Rathkeale. Over 140 businesses, including independent businesses and well-known Irish brands such as Penneys and Brown Thomas, accept the new Limerick Gift Card. John Moran, Mayor of Limerick said: "Local retail businesses are key to a vibrant Limerick. They provide essential shopping and services, employment and broader support in our communities. But it is not a one-way street. They need our support too. A little adjustment by each of us in how we spend this Christmas will make a huge collective difference to them. These innovative cards make that easy for us all! Please think local this year!" The Limerick Gift Card is part of the multi-award winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Drogheda, Letterkenny, Sligo and Waterford. Over €7 million Town & City Gift Cards were sold in Ireland in 2023, with around 80% of sales to organisations for staff rewards and incentives. Newly launched technology from Miconex allows Irish organisations to distribute digital Limerick Gift Cards to their staff, clients and customers online to multiple participants at once, immediately or on a future date. Liam Dwan, manager of Brown Thomas said it's a card for everyone: "Brown Thomas is located on O'Connell Street at the centre of Limerick's main shopping district and as one of Ireland's leading department stores, we were keen to get involved with the Limerick Gift Card. What's great about the card is the choice on offer. With one card, recipients can go shopping in Limerick's best stores, grab a bite to eat or a coffee, or even stay over. It's a card that caters for everyone." Penneys store manager Noel McNamara adds: "Penneys Limerick is delighted to be collaborating with fellow Limerick businesses on this exciting new gift card for our city and county. People often visit the city for the high street stores, but will stay to discover other businesses too, and this has a positive impact on everyone. We know from our own Penneys gift cards that people spend over and above the value on the cards, all benefiting our local economy and helping Limerick to thrive." Alongside city businesses, a range of Limerick county businesses are participating in the program, like Isobel's Boutique in Adare. Kay Mulcaire is the owner of the store and said the card is straightforward and appealing: "The fact you can buy a digital version of the card which can be added to digital wallets is fantastic. Lots of people pay using their phones now, so it makes supporting local really convenient. It's also ideal for last-minute gifts, as people can buy the digital card online and send it to the recipient in moments. People want to support local, but it has to be easy, and the new Limerick Gift Card is straightforward and appealing." Hospitality businesses including restaurants, cafés and pubs are also accepting the card, like multi-award winning pub Mother Macs on High Street and Upper Denmark Street. Michael McMahon, owner of Mother Macs, said the card provides much-needed support for the hospitality sector: "Supporting local has always been at the heart of what we do at Mother Macs Public House, and the Limerick City Gift Card aligns perfectly with that ethos. It's a simple yet impactful way to champion our city's incredible mix of retailers, hospitality venues, and cultural gems." A range of accommodation providers are also accepting the Limerick Gift Card, like Deebert House Hotel. Margaret O'Sullivan, manager of the hotel, commented: "Nestled at the foothills of the Ballyhoura Mountains, ...

Limerick organisations unite to develop 'shop local' gift card

Limerick City and County Council, in partnership with Limerick Chamber, have unveiled plans to introduce a new gift card to encourage shop local in association with local businesses. The new Limerick Gift Card is set to launch before Christmas with an aim of driving footfall and spend in the city and surrounding towns, including Newcastle West, Adare, Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock and Rathkeale. Newly elected Mayor of Limerick, John Moran outlined plans for a shop local initiative in his Mayoral Programme in August. The forthcoming Limerick Gift Card will be available as either a digital or physical gift card, with multiple benefits over paper gift vouchers, including security, friction-less redemptions and quick payment for merchants accepting the cards. The new Limerick gift card will provide tangible investment into a number of sectors including retail, hospitality, leisure and services, benefiting both the day and night time economy. Limerick businesses are encouraged to take part in the programme, which offers a no commission basis. Michelle Gallagher, CEO of Limerick Chamber said the Limerick Gift Card will differentiate itself from other gift cards: "A key USP of the card is the commission free nature of it. Limerick businesses have experience of accepting the national cards that charge commission for every transaction. With the Limerick Gift Card, the business keeps 100% of the transaction, at no additional cost to the purchaser. This is a gift card purely for Limerick which can be spent only with Limerick businesses, and that sets it apart from any other gift card. "This is a great and tax efficient opportunity for employers in the region to support local businesses, by providing the Limerick Gift Card to their employees this year. Every transaction will go a long way in helping local businesses in Limerick." John Moran, Mayor of Limerick said: "The Mayoral Programme set out the plan to improve and invigorate Limerick's shopping districts. That is exactly what the Limerick Gift Card will do, giving people money to spend with Limerick businesses, in person, driving footfall. I am calling on Limerick organisations to unite to develop the Limerick Gift Card. "Once the Limerick Gift Card launches, organisations will have the option of a gift card for Limerick where the money stays right across the county in Limerick, benefiting local businesses. Just in time for Christmas planning." The Limerick Gift Card will be part of the multi award winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Drogheda, Letterkenny, Sligo and Waterford. Over €7 million Town & City Gift Cards were sold in Ireland in 2023, with around 80% of sales to organisations for staff rewards and incentives. Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said: "It is very easy for Limerick businesses to register to accept the forthcoming Limerick Gift Card using a simple one-time registration process. As the card is Mastercard backed, businesses need no additional equipment, and it's friction-free."
