The 2023 Barbie movie was a massive box office hit, with an incredible construction of 'Barbie World'. The soundtrack played a huge role in this world-building, with its heavy use of synthesised instruments and hyperpop creating what can only be described as a sense of 'plasticity'. In this episode, undergraduate Music student Florence Allen is joined by Dr. Adam Harper, a music critic and lecturer whose specialisms include electronic and pop music, to discuss how the soundtrack of the Barbie movie is a key element in the film's storytelling, whilst tapping into the latest trends in internet and pop culture.

This week me & Matt Macklin are joined by Adam Harper who on Friday night fights Anthony Fowler at Matchroom Square Gardens. Adam’s got one of the best stories out there. 3 years ago me & Matt commentated on his Midlands Area title win. He followed it up by travelling to Australia to challenge for the Commonwealth title after chasing and getting the fight on Facebook. Then he came back home and won an English title. Then on the brink of a British title challenge failed a brain scan, retired and started training to be a referee. Then he got the failed scan overturned, hassled the life out of Eddie Hearn and got himself the Fowler fight. Oh, and he got engaged during lockdown too. It’s a rollercoaster.
As an amateur boxer, Anthony Fowler won Commonwealth Gold, World Championship bronze and competed at the Rio Olympics. As a pro his record - at the time of recording - stands at 12-1. He's set to fight Adam Harper at the 'Matchroom Square Garden' on August 7 2020. Outside of boxing, Anthony has a property business and promotes CBD Oil, which he credits for a huge boost in his well-being.
Former English Super Welterweight Champion Adam Harper, from Tewkesbury, who's returning to boxing after a 23-month layoff. Adam's brain scans were reviewed and he's been allowed to box again. He takes on former Commonwealth amateur champion Anthony Fowler live on Sky Sports on August 8th.
Sofía is a teenager living on a coffee farm and was going to school five days a week. But a year later, she’s studying only on Saturdays. This might sound trivial, but I’m going to take you on a journey to show you why this undermines an industry worth over $30 Billion. ———————————A list of charities working in the coffee sector: https://sritson.com/Good-Hands-in-Coffee-BetaBuy your next coffee from a marginalized farmer: https://marginalizedfarmers.org/Leave a review for Filter Stories on Castbox! https://castbox.fm/channel/2604177?country=usNeed help on your podcast? Adam Harper has had a rollercoaster 18 months. In September 2018 he won an English title in his 10th professional fight and felt on the cusp of huge nights to come. But then a brain scan led to all plans being ripped up and Adam announced his retirement. Then his mother’s illness led to a review of all his career brain scans and opened up the chance of a comeback. It was set for April. But then the Coronavirus came...Apologies for audio issues, having to record remotely on phone during the Coronavirus crisis in the UK.

A change in his brain scan meant former Commonwealth title challenger Adam Harper hung up his gloves. Harper talks here with searing honesty about the concerns over his long-term health, the hardest part of becoming an ex-fighter, the pressure of being a ticket-seller and much more. But it was following a gruelling fight in Australia, in a bout against Michael Zerafa, that he knew the course of his career had changed. Now, with his eye on becoming a leading referee, he addresses the hard topics of pressure, health and retirement.
We assume the instruments we know and love today will be around forever. What if they're not? What new forms and ideas could take their place? Hannah Catherine Jones takes you into the world of the prototype, meeting instrument inventors challenging traditions and shifting boundaries. Sarah Kenchington is an artist and inventor living on a derelict farm in the Campsies, Scotland. Her curiosity for how instruments would sound if they were freed from humans led to a life-long endeavour. Twenty years later and she's still tinkering with her semi-mechanical orchestra, complete with hurdy-gurdy, 100-year old gramophone and ping pong machine. Savinder Bual is an artist, animator and now instrument-inventor. She's fascinated with the pineapple - a fruit that symbolises Britain's dark colonial history whilst being a fun, popular motif. By spinning the pineapple head, she realised its leaves could pluck strings and make music. That discovery led to her making a complete orchestra of pineapple instruments. The Mi.Mu gloves were invented by a team of scientists, technologists and e-textile designers. Using your movements to trigger sounds from a computer, they allow the performers the flexibility to move on stage without being connected to a computer. But if the sound isn't coming from the gloves themselves, does this still make them an instrument? Hannah enlists the expertise of Adam Harper (musicologist, music critic, former church organ player), important grime figurehead Elijah (who runs the record label Butterz), multi-instrumentalist and producer Swindle, and the luthier Bill Bunce. Hannah Catherine Jones is an artist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, conductor and founder of the Peckham Chamber Orchestra. Produced by Eliza Lomas.
