Bryan shares his terrible travels to and from Memphis by asking the question: What is appropriate airplane behavior? Who owns the arm rest? Should you take off shoes during long distance flights? Why do you get 4 carry bags and I get 1? Who are these people that cut the line at every gate? What time should I show for my flight? What do you wear on a plane? Should you talk to your seat-mate? And most importantly...who controls the shade? TCB hopes to bring common sense and civility back to the not-so-friendly skies! LINKS:Want a TCB limited edition collectible sticker?
SHOUT OUTS Thanks to all our patrons and everyone in the Runcation Nation for all your support and encouragement. RUN Welcome to Anchorage RunFest! We recap Saturday's events on our trip this week, including the Expo and the Anchorage Mile. The Anchorage Mile events included a Women's, Men's, Military, and Community Mile that went off throughout the morning. We had a great time running the flat course that looped 1.5 times around a great park where an outdoor post-race event was held with tents set up with games for kids, a truck serving coffee, post-race pizza, and a hunting safety tips tent was set up. Then we got the honor and privilege to hear Bart Yasso and World Record Holder for Double Amputees in the Marathon. Marko Cheseto motivate us and provide us with wisdom ahead of the longer races on Sunday. Such great events to start the weekend off right! We will recap our 5K experience on next week's episode, so stay tuned for more about this incredible weekend. It is our first back-to-live racing and traveling out of the state… can you tell we are excited? EAT Simon and Seafort's was our celebratory meal after all the running was done in Alaska. It was amazing. Pro tip: make a reservation! If you are craving a classic steakhouse experience or a place to get authentic and delicious Alaskan King Crab when it is hard to come by, get to Simon and Seafort's. Their ribeye is incredible, too! DRINK The last time we were in Anchorage, we explored some outstanding breweries. This time, we decided to indulge in amazing beverages from Anchorage Distillery. We had a Ghost Pepper Caesar and a Pickle Rick, but we did not stop there. We also had a Porch Swing and a Barbie Girl. Listen to the episode to discover who ordered what… And if you are ever in Anchorage, check out Anchorage Distillery! THAT'S A WRAP! Don't forget the virtual race that is near and dear to our hearts that we talked about last week. We Love Truckers (Rob Nadeau Memorial) Virtual Race. It is a virtual race of various distances honoring the life of one of our own lost too soon, Rob Nadeau. It supports organizations he wanted to highlight and help, St. Christopher's Trucker Relief Fund and Koch Trucking. These organizations work to support and show appreciation for many Truck Drivers across the United States. We will be running our miles during Truck Driver Appreciation Week (September 12 - September 18), culminating in Rob's birthday on the 18th, and it's going on RIGHT NOW! Find out more information about the organization and sign up for the race: https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/Redding/WeLoveTruckersVirtualChallenge?remMeAttempt= Find out more about St. Christoper's Trucker Relief Fund at: https://truckersfund.org Find out more about Koch Trucking: https://kochtrucking.us We love and miss Rob with all our hearts. He was one of the earliest and biggest supporters of our show. We look forward to honoring him in September. THANK YOU! Thank you for listening! We are looking forward to YEAR NUMBER 5 of the podcast because of all your support! Don't forget to follow us and tell us where to find you next on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Join Andrew and Brandon as they journey back to September 1997, but first they talk about being able to record in person for the past 3 episodes. After the break, Andrew wants to discuss the live episode of E.R. that he some how forgot after his last rewatch. They then pitch their favorite picks for the new new host of Jeopardy. Brandon enlightens Andrew on Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation and the female turtle introduced in the series and the time they crossed over with Power Rangers: In Space. Andrew gets to give his thoughts on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. Finally Brandon closes out the episode by reading the lyrics of Barbie Girl by Aqua.Check out this week's Spotify Playlist:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7G3iUPnWzWRAsUS0uI0DQP?si=b190d33ef78b45c5 Like the show? A wise poet once said, "A little bit of love goes a long, long way. Lifting you up to a brighter day," and while you wait for that RuPaul earworm to exit your head, why not sashay your way to the Drag Race Hall of Fame to meet the newest inductee! It's been an incredible journey, but the latest season of All Stars is over and a new queen has been crowned! Everybody say (Kylie Sonique) LOVE!The boys are backpack, backpack, back again to sip the tea and dish the dirt, squirrel friends! Now that the finale of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 6 has aired, Bryan, Erik and Pat Da Bear have reconvened to dish on the cast that made up, quite arguably, one of the best seasons of All Stars we've seen yet. From the sisterhood the queens shared to the stunning looks they turned, to the depth and maturity they showed in the challenges, these queens truly are ALL STARS. They also share their picks for the best of the challenges from this season as well as the challenges they hope to NEVER see again and of course there's an extended conversation about the Super Secret Lip Sync Smackdown Pageant Competition Extravaganza Competition Extraordinaire. Did Silky deserve all of her wins? Did Jan break the runway lights on purpose? Should the light up wall have won that Barbie Girl lip sync (the answer is of course - and the lighting person should get a raise as well!)? Was Trinity robbed of her rightful place in the top 4? Did the right queen take the crown? All of those questions are discussed and in this episode, so check it out and let us know what YOU think!Grab your wig and heels, 'cause we're bringing you another fabulous episode of Drag is the New Spandex! In this episode of COL Drag Race ‘T-Time', Gary and Damon finally get a full-on view of the “game within a game” that has been hinted at all season long. During this lip-sync smackdown spectacular, the guys flap their gums as the eliminated queens face off in one song after the other after the other. … Continue reading COLDR: AS6E10: Rudemption Lip-Sync Smackdown →

In this episode Simon, Jon, and Mat discuss A Town Called Bastard, The Silencers and The Cannonball Run through a series of tenuous links. We explore how Tinker from Lovejoy shot someone 5 times with a shotgun, how Simon acquired his Matt Helm's Lounge boxset, how seatbelts got their name and Aqua's Barbie Girl's connection to Titanic. All this and more for your listening pleasure.
This episode, we discuss earworms. Not earwigs, earwax, earthworms, wormholes, gummi worms, or tapeworms. Earworms. We talk what causes them, how to cure them, theories about them, and songs that have caused us to get stuck with an earworm. We go thru a few lists from different studies. We also try some more craft beers, hear Frank's thoughts on Mudvayne's reunion, learn of Frank's Barbie Girl fantasy, and learn of Kim's fear of getting Rickrolled. We were going to review a spoof movie this week but someone messed up at the factory! That's right, this week is an OOPS ALL SONGS episode of the podcast, and we've got three top-tier novelty songs that we discuss this week on the pod. First, the meme sensation GANGNAM STYLE, followed by the 90s one-hit wonder BARBIE GIRL. Finally, we take it home with a classic, the Coasters' YAKETY YAK! Even without a movie, this episode is JAM packed with Sopranos talk AND games!
The Boston Bruins are pretty much the only bright spot for Boston sports fans, so Gab and Al welcome on their friend (and Al's coworker) Lauren Campbell of NESN to discuss Chara's departure, their playoff chances, the Lake Tahoe trip, the teams that scare Lauren, and of course, Pastrňák's Barbie Girl soundbite!
Today a himbo and a PhD candidate examine the cultural role of the 'bimbo' (a retro trope that's angling for a comeback) with the help of a few classic pop songs: "Barbie Girl" by Aqua, "Stupid Girls" by Pink, and "Stupid Hoe" by Nicki Minaj. Links to the pieces on 2020s bimboism in Rolling Stone and i-D. Over on the Patreon pre-show we talk first impressions of new albums by Madison Beer and Danny L Harle (more on this another time) plus movies, sugar, and we ease into the bimboist waters... The homey, Matt Barr, joins the stream to give Scott, Mike, and Drew all the crap. Scott pops some Unwind Hoppy Pils (Offshoot Beer Co.), Drew downs some Lightshine Radler (Wibby Brewing) and some TOSO (Verboten Brewing),and Mike pounds some Crowdpleaser IPA (Three Creeks Brewing Co.). In honor of Matt Barr’s 49ers fandom, the beers get ranked on the Jimmy Garoppolo scale: does it have the juice? Who Won the Post-Game?: The fellas talk about some of the most interesting post-game pressers from this past weekend: Derrick Lewis’s hot balls, Prime getting robbed during his first game, and Pasta missing out on Barbie Girl. Do That Hockey: Scott talks about the NHL Outdoors games at Lake Tahoe, and the fellas go down a Green Day rabbit-hole. Hot Takes BBQ: Mike found a tweet from someone who unloaded a ton of Hot Takes, so the guys break them down. They talk about NSYNC vs. BSB, Iverson and whether or not he was overrated, and the quality of person that Jim Halpert is. Stick to Sports: Idan talks about NBA Top Shot, and Mike is intrigued on how to utilize it to sue random Twitter users. A co-production of Dutch broadcasters VPRO and Radio 2, Weird Hit Wonder is a podcast featuring unusual Dutch hit songs from the 1990s. Music journalist and presenter Atze de Vrieze speaks with the artists and industry influencers associated with each song to uncover the cultural context and secrets behind each hit.The podcast features five songs that achieved some level of commercial success in The Netherlands during the 1990s. Weird Hit Wonder demonstrates that weirdness has no boundaries when it comes to the musical genre. There’s something for everyone whether it’s the pulsing electro “gabber” trash of “Alles Naar de Klote,” the dorky, clap-alongs of “One Day Fly” and “Mooi Man” or the bouncy “bubbling” of “Meisje (Zo Lelijk als de Nacht)”.Beyond the Dutch borders, Atze is interested in the stories behind odd international hits like “Barbie Girl” by Aqua or “Cotton Eye Joe” by Rednex. A unique sound and sense humour are important criteria for “weird” hits, but equally important are the historical context and deeper layers that form hits. Weird hits are also songs that you wouldn’t play at your funeral, according to Atze. “I will not play “Barbie Girl at my funeral – of course I won’t”.In this episode of MetaPod, we talk and laugh with Atze about the songs of the Weird Hit Wonder podcast and other popular one-off hits from around the world. We also discuss how nostalgia and the total availability of music since the Internet have led to a re-evaluation of music from the 80s and 90s.Furthermore, we talk about manufactured pop, music critics and COVID-induced creativity. There’s even a bit of Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn.
On this week's episode of "Hey Lady", your host's finish up their series on toys with a BANG! Let's talk about perhaps one of the most iconic toys of all time, Barbie. Join us as we unpack the complicated history of Barbie, from the controversial to the innovative. She's had just about every job imaginable, and more than a few facelifts. Her reputation has taken its fair share of wobbles. Even so, life in plastic, it's fantastic! If you like what you hear don't forget to subscribe and we'll See You Next Tuesday!
Okay…let’s go over this one more time…there are just twelve notes in the western scale…the ways they can be combined to form pleasing sounds are finite in number…it’s a big number, but it’s still finite… If we look at chords—which are combinations of three or more single notes played simultaneously—the number is smaller still…and there are only so many ways in which chords may be played in a sequence that makes any sense to the ear and the soul… For example, there are dozens and dozens of hit songs with the same four chords at their root…e, b, c#, and a, played in that order… If I haven’t lost you to music theory yet, all these songs are constructed on those chords… “With or Without You” from U2, Green Day’s “When I Come Around” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” from the Smashing Pumpkins, and The Offspring’s “Self-Esteem”…plus “Don’t Stop Believin'’” by Journey, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, and John Denver, “Take Me Home Country Roads”… In fact, there’s a whole Wikipedia page dedicated to what’s know as the “i-v-vi-iv progression”…it can be played in different keys (for example, “bullet with butterfly wings” is in b-flat while “self-esteem” is in c-major) and the chords can be ordered differently, but the common dna is there…this is just how our scale works and how songs are constructed… Now listen to me: this is not a sign that any of these artists lack in creativity… no one is breaking any rules…and no one is ripping off anyone because no one can have exclusive ownership over a chord progression… However, there is a subset of people—lawyers, mostly—who believe that they should be able to sue artists for plagiarism if there’s any perceived similarity between two songs…the original composer needs to be compensated for this alleged theft…even the threat of a lawsuit and jury trial might be enough to scare up some settlement money… This is insane…and the situation has been getting worse and worse…I think it’s time we deconstructed what’s happening with these crazy lawsuits that threaten to cripple all of music… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Normal People in Spanish. *** In Episode Five, “The Last Supper” our two leads KNOW they are in love and that is a whole “thing” that sits and swells between them. Falling in love is scary, just like the beginning of this episode. (01:36) *** Before we get to our couple at the restaurant, our guy is messing up his neatly organized closet and Kate and Carinn discuss the ways we represent (or misrepresent) ourselves to the outside world. (05:20) *** Our female lead says when I see him try to smile I see a scared little boy and this leads Carinn to an astonishing revelation about herself and vulnerability. Our minds are blown and there may be a tear shed. (10:17) *** We finally get to the part where the two of them get to the fancy restaurant and we start to see the playful push and pull between them and then the smoldering chemistry. Apparently listening is sexy as hell. (13:51) *** This episode brings the food porn to an elevated level, which got us talking about our own relationships with, and idiosyncrasies about, food. (18:54) *** We love the scene at the table where she tells him they have to be patient with each other. Their wounds are becoming slightly exposed and their past hurts are coming to the surface. And from the pain comes pure, smoldering fire between these two! (22:24) *** The two are officially in love -- BOOM -- it has hit them both. But this episode ends with us wondering what it will all mean going forward. (31:23) *** Episode 6, “The Perfect Croissant Doesn’t Exist,” starts off with dueling bad dreams for our two leads who have spent the night together finally. When you fall in love you feel your greatest fears. (34:27) *** After sleeping together, the indecision sets in for her as to what she really wants and then we get flashbacks to the their sex scenes from the night before. Carinn declares this her kind of “TV sex” and Kate couldn’t agree more! It is total fire. But their use of food in the sex scenes has Carinn worried and Kate confused. (41:00) *** It isn’t all sex, their intimacy continues and we love that just as much. Things quickly get trippy when they introduce some hallucinogenic drugs into the mix. Listening to them sing “Barbie Girl” in American accents is priceless. Trying to guess where these last two episodes will take us already has us getting sad.
