Why do existing organizations with resources find themselves irrelevant (or no longer in existence), whether through new technology, changes in demographics, competition? Chances are they did not plan for the disruption, which can come from any direction or place, especially where we least expect it. Sameer Hasija is co-author of The Phoenix Encounter Method: Lead Like Your Business Is On Fire. Just like the mythical phoenix that is born again from the ashes, this method requires you to think of your business truly being disrupted (burning to the ground) so you can build it again. Shifting your mindset to create a burning platform, allows you to build a playbook to defend against the attacks (in whatever form they take). This is an on-going process and can take your organization to the next level. Urgent – – read, listen, or do NOW! Can you relate? Kevin chats with Brandon Smith, author of the Hot Sauce Principle: How to Live and Lead in a World Where Everything Is Urgent All of the Time. Brandon compares urgency to hot sauce. A little bit gives you some flavor and enhances the meal. Too much and your mouth is on fire. Time is our most precious resource and because of things like technology or the markets, everything is urgent all the time. Brandon believes urgency can help us create focus and lead us to action. However, when it becomes too much, we are overwhelmed and not productive. He has also found that, just like hot sauce, different people, teams, and organizations need different amounts to feel the impact. To lead change, we need some urgency to disrupt positively. I recently signed a contract with Taylor & Francis to write a book. I quickly determined that the process of writing a book requires strategy and process, just like anything else we want to accomplish. My friend and colleague Alan Willett recently published Lead With Speed, a book designed to guide on budget, on time, high quality project results. That's what I want so I am leveraging some of Alan's insights.

One of the most important questions a leader can ask themselves is: “How do I get my teams, my organization to move faster?” That is the challenge that all leaders face. This challenge grows more intense every day. Lead with Speed is the answer. This problem of speed is often disguised by other symptoms, such as “my projects cannot make an accurate prediction of when they will be done” or the stated need of “my teams need to take more risks.” The real need is not reckless risk-taking that will lead to even more problems and nishing even later. The real need is for speed. Alan Willett is the master of the “friction points” of organizations highly dependent on technology. This ranges from organizations that create world-class software products to the organization that use those products to create their own competitive advantage. Alan is the expert who transforms organizational friction points to produce positive results for the business and the people that create and use the technology.
