If you've been in the homeschooling realm for long you've probably heard the term "living books." This is a term coined by Charlotte Mason, and has become extremely widespread, for good reason. Living books put the flesh on the dry bones of fact. Mason boldly stated that " "no education seems to be worth the name which has not made children at home in the world of books, and so related them, mind to mind, with thinkers who have dealt with knowledge. We reject epitomes, compilations, and their like, and put into children's hands books which, long or short, are living.” (Charlotte Mason, School Education, p. 226) Today I'm speaking with book enthusiast Amber O'Neal Johnston of Heritage Mom all about living books -- what they are, why they're so important, and how we can use them build a rich heritage in our homes. ______ Amber O'Neal Johnston is an author, speaker, and worldschooling Charlotte Mason mama who blends life-giving books and a culturally rich environment for her four children and others seeking to do the same. She recommends we offer children opportunities to see themselves and others reflected in their lessons, especially throughout their books, and she's known for sharing literary “mirrors and windows” on HeritageMom.com and @heritagemomblog (IG). Amber is also the author of A Place to Belong, a guide for families of all backgrounds to raise kids to celebrate their heritage, community, and the world. Creating Family Culture :: Amber O'Neal Johnston [SOM Wk 4] You are creating a culture for your family, right now, whether or not you're aware of it or intentional in it. Your words and actions reveal the functional values you have for your family. Is yours a culture of fun and laughter? Grace and second chances? Integrity and grit? It could be all of those and more, or something simpler - it is unique to your family! Whatever it is, if it isn't intentionally cultivated it will be like a garden filled with weeds - growing, but haphazard. My guest this week is Amber O'Neal Johnston and one of the values that drives her family's culture is that her kids would know they are seen and valued at home and in the world. And that other people are just as valuable too. This, along with other values, drives the decisions they make about how they interact with the world around them, right down to the restaurants they eat at. She challenges us to not only cultivate a family culture, but to grow as moms and people along the way. Her book, A Place to Belong: Celebrating Diversity and Kinship in the Home and Beyond is available now. We're taking time this summer (as usual) to be mentored by some experienced moms and benefit from their wisdom. I'm asking them about their “mom brands” and the unique families and assignments God has given them to help us embrace the specific and unique spot God has given each of us. Discussion Questions: What stood out to you from this episode? What practices or resources have you used to expose your kids to other cultures? Where has God called you to speak out in love when you'd prefer to remain silent? Spend time praying with your group for these circumstances. What is one value that you want to emphasize in your home? Amber shared that she had to release her need to impress other moms in order for her kids to flourish - what expectation or ideal do you need to let go of so that your kids can flourish? How would being secure and confident in your family culture change your relationships with other moms or families? How can we embrace and accept the body God gave us? I don't know about you, but I have often wished for a body built very differently from mine. God gave me a body I keep wishing away. So how do we accept and embrace the body God specifically picked for us? How do we find belonging in our own skin? Creating A Culturally Rich Home Learning Environment Amber O'Neal Johnston is a writer, speaker, and Worldschooling Charlotte Mason mama who blends living books with life-giving books and a culturally-rich environment for her four children and others seeking to do the same. She recommends we offer children opportunities to see themselves and others reflected in their lessons and especially throughout their books, and she's known for sharing literary “mirrors and windows” on HeritageMom.com and @heritagemomblog on Instagram. I have followed Amber on social media for a while now and I wanted a chance to know her homeschool story a little more. "Charlotte Mason with an afro" tagline got me pretty quickly. Amber gave me a a chance to ask all of the questions around homeschool life, purpose and creating a culturally rich home learning environment. In This Episode Can you delve into literature, living books and classical history and find examples of people that look you? Do your children find their own likeness reflected back to them in the pages they turn? Not every family can answer yes. But Amber O'Neal Johnston's family is trying to bridging that gap to create an inclusive, culturally rich education. In this episode Amber shared with me the reasons why they first chose to homeschool and why they continue to homeschool. Coming from a family of school administrators, I knew that her choice to homeschool came from deep within the heart, not just the mind. She explained that this was a decision they made for their oldest child. They were uncertain at first if she would fit into the mainstream classroom. After time passed and their family grew, they came to recognize that homeschooling catered to her individual intricacies. But it also highlighted the unique gifts that each of their children brings to them. "It's not what we are going to exclude, it's who we are going to include" Amber and I also explored how their homeschool has become a culturally confirming environment. The importance of raising black kids to love themselves became a central part of their learning life after her daughter told her that "you say that we study important people- and they are all white". She wondered where or if anyone that looks like her has a place in the past, present or future. So along with love and faith, this quickly became a guiding purpose in their learning life. Through the stories they read, the travel they embark on and who they are being in the world, they truly own their own learning. It's "not what we are going to exclude, it's who we are going to include", Amber tells me. I certainly connect with that. If you enjoyed this interview you can find Amber at her blog, HeritageMom.com and on Instagram @heritagemomblog. She offers a wealth of resources to families that are also looking for a more culturally confirming learning environment. I also recommend checking out my episodes with Karema Akilah of The Genius School and Akilah S Richards of Fare of The Free Child. Although Karema and Akilah are Unschoolers, rather than Charlotte Mason homeschoolers, their purpose is similar. Raising black kids to love themselves. And support learners in their diversity and liberation. Would you like to be a bigger part of the podcast? Welcome back to the Homegrown Sonshine Podcast. In this episode, with great delight and honour, I got to sit with a remarkable woman, an exceptional mum, a great encourager and friend whose work and contribution to the Home-Ed sphere I greatly admire- the radiant Amber O'Neal Johnston, @heritagemom. This week, Amber and I focus on her rituals and practices around Summer Schooling, as part of our series on Home-Ed rituals and practices. Amber talks about the factors that led to her family's transition into Homeschooling as well as what their first few years of it looked like. She also gives an absolutely entertaining and endearing explanation of the gap she was trying to meet when she set up a summer curriculum for her children, fondly referred to as ‘Black Term', and how this transitioned into Summer Schooling. Most importantly, Amber takes us on an enchanting journey into her plans for a special summer school project this year as an extension of her new resource “Sweet Tea & Cookies: A Family Celebration of the American South”. Through this journey, she hopes to journey with her children into the Deep South to reclaim stories of redemption and beauty out of America's difficult mixed heritage. So grab your drinks and get comfy because you're in for some soulful sisterly camaraderie treat with this episode. I would love to hear your thoughts. Amber O'Neal describes herself as a homeschooling mama using Charlotte Mason principles in an atmosphere where “Charlotte Mason wears an afro.” She joins me to talk about how she unexpectedly found she loved homeschooling and working to help her kids love themselves and others. “The Holy Spirit is the supreme educator and the Holy Spirit will speak directly and work directly with our children just as he does through us. And that was a total reframe for me because it gave me a lot of freedom and released a lot of pressure for me when I realized that I'm actually not the supreme educator, I am a guide and I'm going to come alongside my child and that my job is not to teach in the traditional sense of teaching, but more to act as a guide.” Amber shares why she's creating resources for her children and others to share books and history from people of color and the journey she's been on with her children as she encourages them to embrace their skin color and cultural history. And her resources and the Charlotte Mason principles aren't just for homeschooling mamas. She has book lists of great things to read with your children to give them a more holistic view on black history, poetry and culture. In the past, a lot of focus was put on being "color blind," but now that we know better, we want our children to have "color-full" experiences, and this includes what they find on their bookshelves and reading lists. Classic literature tends to have a very Euro-centric attitude and we've often struggled with how to curate a more diverse reading library for our families that celebrates both the classics and diversity. Amber O'Neal Johnston has done this exact thing beautifully. For this episode, Amber shares candidly from her family's own experience from being inspired by Charlotte Mason to navigating her children's experience with race and what she's been able to do for them by thoughtfully and purposefully curating their bookshelves. This episode is full of great ideas and resources to help you find great books for your family that celebrate both classic literature and diversity. You won't want to miss it! After wholeheartedly committing to follow Mason's philosophy, she became disheartened when months went by with little mention, if any, of the stories and accomplishments of black people in her school room. The literary quality of the books was better, but she found that the cultural emptiness she experienced as a schoolgirl was being perpetuated within the walls of her own home. Committed to bridging the gap for her 4 children, Amber has embarked on a journey of uniquely merging living books with life-giving books to ensure that their education is not a legalistic venture in Charlotte Mason but an honest experience that honors the Truth while helping her children to see the imago Dei in themselves and others. Amber speaks, writes, and shares her observations on home education, culture, books, global travel, and more, and when asked about her path she likes to smile and say, “In my house, Charlotte Mason has an afro.” Subscribe Now: iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | Google Play
