What does the community want more - every last transgressor to be punished, or government to keep out of their business? How can regulators keep pace with changing community expectations about what is ‘appropriate' - and, indeed, what is a workplace? What is a regulator to do when you're facing these issues in the full glare of media scrutiny? In this final episode of the Essendon mini-series, we think about what this footy doping scandal can tell us about the challenges of being a modern regulator.Intro grab is then Chief Executive of the AFL, Andrew Demetriou, at the press conference releasing the Australian Crime Commission report on 7 February, 2013.Now for some appropriately bureaucratic disclaimers....Those of us in the employ of the State Government speak in a strictly personal capacity, consistent with the Public Sector Code of Ethics that permits public servants to promote an outcome in relation to an issue of public interest - in this case, the betterment of the public service.Nothing we say should be taken as representing the views of the Government or our employers. While we have tried to be as thorough in our research as busy full time jobs and lives allow, we definitely don't guarantee that we've got all the details right. If you want rigorous reporting on Robodebt, we recommend the work of Rick Morton at the Saturday Paper, Chris Knaus and Luke Henriques-Gomes at the Guardian, Ben Eltham at Crikey, Julian Bajkowski at The Mandarin, and of course, the Robodebt Royal Commission itself. Please feel free to email us corrections, episode suggestions, or anything else, at thewestminstertraditionpod@gmail.com.Thanks to PanPot audio for our intro and outro music. 'Til next time!

The former Don, Giant and Saint who could turn out for reigning premiers Melbourne, the ex-Bulldog who has been linked with Essendon, former AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou's reflections on Jobe Watson's experience throughout the Dons' supplements saga, and more.
For six months of the year, Australian Rules football dominates Melbourne's newspapers, nightly bulletins and water cooler conversations. So far, so good. But more often than not the footy narrative that enters the public discourse is carefully shaped by the AFL itself and pushed by the cabal of powerful men who run the game more like a fiefdom than a sport. Head office's story is the only story.Enter Mick Warner, football reporter at the Herald Sun. In 2019, Mick decided to tell an alternative story of the modern AFL, one that reevaluated the game's guardians and their legacy. That book, The Boys' Club, exposes the secret, murky world that the AFL's top brass fights tooth and nail to keep behind closed doors. In the third episode of StoryCraft, host Ben Hart sits down with Mick to find out how he does what he does. Together, they discuss speaking truth to power, the importance of old-school shoe-leather journalism, and what it's like to step outside of an entrenched system of patronage and make an enemy out of the biggest game in town.Looking for more on the art, craft and science of storytelling? Australian rugby is in quite a state and today we have Brendan Cannon on the show to speak about the need for us to remedy this by reigniting a lost sense of community around our beloved game. For those who don't know, Brendan was an Australian Wallaby from 2001 to 2006 and has a large number of games under his belt for the Queensland Reds, the Waratahs, and the Western Force too. In today's show, we chat with Brendan about his personal journey, the obstacles he overcame to achieve what he has, and his views on the current and future state of Australian rugby. Brendan takes us through his formative years and his time with the Souths before getting into a topic that penetrates most of today's conversation, the growing disconnect between professional and club rugby, causes for this, and the tremendous losses the game has experienced as a result. Our guest weighs in on changes in gameplay, the commercialisation of professional rugby, the effects of COVID on the industry, and what could be done to bring back our glory days. We also hear about some of Brendan's personal experiences as a professional player such as his swift return to the game after a severe car accident, his transition from number eight to hooker, and his scrum injury that marked his final exit as a professional player. Don't miss this amazing conversation with a man who brings a lifetime of perspectives from inside and out! Key Points From This Episode: • Brendan's rugby family legacy, love of the game, and childhood memories playing at Souths.• The way famous players used to still play for their clubs, inspiring young players.• Commercialization of pro rugby and reasons for its growing disconnect with amateur rugby.• Why pro players should invest in their clubs and not forget about paying tribute to these roots.• Prohibitive costs, sanitized product, less free gameplay, and other reasons rugby isn't what it used to be.• Brendan's near-fatal car accident and what allowed him to return to rugby soon after.• Why Brendan decided to transition from number eight to hooker and his experiences after.• Brendan's career-ending scrum injury and his perspectives on scrum adjudication.• Contributors to Australian rugby's bad state: dismissals, COVID, commercialization.• The potential that bringing back a sense of community has to reignite Australian rugby's spirit.• Examples of brand ambassadorship shown by Andrew Demetriou and David Gallop.• Cues to be taken from other sports about broadcasters being more critical of administrators.Links from this weeks show: Queensland Reds - Queensland RedsNSW Waratahs - WaratahsWestern Force - Western ForceSt Laurence's College - St. Laurence's CollegeSouths Rugby - Souths Rugby Union ClubWhite Ribbon Day - White Ribbon Day
Paul ‘Roosy' Roos has been a legend of our game as a player and coach and has done some wonderful work in the media post his career so chatting to him on Legends with Bevo has certainly been one of my highlights. I also asked him about those controversial comments by Andrew Demetriou when he criticised Roosy's coaching style back in 2005, his response was priceless: ‘It was very strange, we were doing so much for the game and promoting the game in NSW and it was like the CEO of Pepsi saying don't drink Pepsi in NSW, drink Coke instead'. Roosy raised some interesting thoughts on the pandemic, we also spoke about how the AFL has done a wonderful job to get through the season this year and why it's been a blessing to have footy and sport to watch. We also spoke about the benefits of meditating on game day as a player and coach, Roosy and his wife's passion for mindfulness and wellness, playing with and against some of the best players of all time, his footy journey and highlights of his career and the thrill of breaking a 72 year drought when coaching the Swans to the 2005 AFL Premiership.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
