If the Crusaders are well and truly back in 2025 (and they are), then what on earth happened to them last season? Brett McKay & Harry Jones welcome Jamie Wall onto The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast this week, to contemplate that and many questions in and around New Zealand rugby. Last year's Champions, the Blues, seem to have adapted the position of the 2024 Crusaders however, and this weekend's crucial clash in Brisbane against the Queensland Reds feels very ‘must win' for them, an indication of just how far they've fallen in 2025. The guys try to work the difference from one year to the next for the Blues, look a bit closer at the real health of New Zealand Rugby, and ponder the regular question whether this really in the best season of Super Rugby, ever. "I'm trying to make sure I stay within my job and do the normal stuff that I do for the team." This week on The KOKO Show we celebrate the mighty Wallabies going back to back to back in 2024, as we dive deep into the weekend's footy, throwing ‘Schmidt' at the wall and seeing what sticks. With Mr Matt ‘Goitan' Giteau sunning his bits and pieces in the SoCal summer, we have brought in a superstar replacement to adequately fill the void left by the richest man in Canberra. Our panelist this week is the fleet footed frontrower that cuts defenses up like a rusty old lawnmower, a baby faced bulldozer who will never hinge whilst getting off on a scrummaging binge. That is right, please welcome the bloke known as the Newington nightmare, he is all bells and no whistle and boy does he jingle all the way, it is the one and only Mr Angus Bell. In this week's episode we cover all the games from the weekend's inter-tier bonanza of beat downs, we touch on San Diego's disappointing exit from the MLR finals in our ‘Northern Hemisphere Legends' segment and we have a little look at what the Wallabies need to work on moving into the upcoming TRC. Plus, it wouldn't be the KOKO spirit, without showing our headline sponsor Polo Ralph Lauren some love, so we deliver you a ‘Match Fit' straight from the catwalks of Milan, dripping in luxe living and dapper decadence. So pour yourself a double, spark up a winnie red and get cozy on your industrial strength water bed. This KOKO conniption is going to be a bumpy ride. Japan's Top Business Interviews Podcast By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Eddie's coaching of Japan to defeat South Africa against their hometown advantage in South Africa, was a breakthrough moment for Japanese rugby, which until that point had never managed to win a game at that level. Eddie started his coaching career at Randwick as an assistant coach in 1994. He coached Tokai University as an assistant coach in 1995-96, was assistant coach for Japan in 1996, coached the Suntory Sungoliath team in 1997, the ACT Brumbies from 1998-2001, Australia from 2001-2005, Saracens in 2006, the Queensland Reds in 2007, South Africa in 2007, Saracens again in 2007-209, Suntory Sungoliaths again from 2009-2012, Japan from 2012-2015, the Stormers in 2015, England from 2015-2022, Australia in 2023 and Japan from 2024. Over the 9 years Eddie has spent leading in Japan, he has amassed a very detailed understanding of high performance team coaching for this market, especially for young Japanese people. Leading this younger generation is a new challenge for most of us and yet Eddie has spent his whole career working out how to lead young men in their twenties. He is probably the most expert person in Japan in this field and someone we can learn a lot from. Eddie credits his training as a High School teacher, as helping him a great deal when he became a rugby coach. He is a constant student of leadership and permanently curious, as to how he can improve his abilities.

When Aidan Toua left his home in Papua New Guinea and landed in Brisbane to start highschool, he quickly figured out that the connections forged through sport were of critical importance. And so began his relationship with rugby. What started out as a way to make friends quickly became an opportunity to play professionally. In 2011, Aidan was recruited into the Queensland Reds and also went on to play for the ACT Brumbies and the Japan based Honda Heat. Unfortunately, a string of injuries meant that he sometimes spent more time rehabbing with the physios then with his teammates. Why does this matter? Because Aidan was forced pretty early on in his career to confront the fact that rugby might not be the only thing in his life. That didn't mean that he missed being told what to wear and where to be when he retired. And he's honest about the fact that he couldn't work out why no was just offering him a job. But when retirement slowly dawned on him, it was almost out of necessity - rugby actually became the thing that needed to end to create space. Understanding what your motivations are as an athlete is everything. To know what drives you makes the transition into the next stage of life just that little bit easier. Go listen - I think you'll be able to hear Aidan's enthusiasm for what comes after sport. Libby x Contact kim@willoweffect.com for sponsorship opportunities.
