In the latest episode, I discuss a new rule of the asylum, which is to top up your inspiration jar. It's an imaginary jar filled with your inspiration, dreams, and reasons why you want to play. Often when you first start out playing the guitar, this jar will be full, which makes you motivated to pick up and learn the guitar.   But with time, and the challenges most guitarists face when starting out playing, the jar starts getting emptier and emptier. It's important to never let that jar empty, this will help you keep your motivation strong and your practising consistent. The government today announced that a group of survivors of the former psychiatric hospital will get between $15,000 and $55,000 each to cover the legal fees they originally paid for themselves when reaching a settlement. Before Christmas, my wife (Jean) and I were invited to a client's celebration dinner, which was hosted to mark a significant company milestone. No expense was spared, and a wonderful night was had by all. Why am I telling you this? Because of something my client (the MD), whom I have known for some ten years, said when introducing me to her family. "This is Andrew; he's been very helpful to me personally and the team in general, but I never know how to describe what he does." The conversation moved on, and so did this most enjoyable evening. Over the following days, and in particular over the holiday break, this comment played on my mind. Why could this person not articulate what I do? Then it struck me that in the beginning, when I founded Aristo, I struggled to explain what I did before really realising it's not what I do that I should talk about. You and I should always talk about the results of what we do. In my case, I give people increased confidence. Whether it's: To take on a new role which will stretch you. Tell an audience how you believe things should be done differently. Become an entrepreneur and start your own business. Help people to buy your product or service. Pitch for investment to a bank or investment house. In my role as a coach, this is how I help people. I capture your business story and give you the confidence to tell or sell it. Why do you need to top up your confidence levels? If you tell yourself you have all the confidence you need, it's more likely to be bravado than confidence. My clients range from successful CEOs to entrepreneurs taking their first tentative steps to people who wish to add value to society but do not have the confidence to step up. Here are the three questions I ask every new client to give some thought to before we work together. Who do you want to hear your story? (audience) What problem do you solve for this person or persons? How will your audience be better? Helping people identify and realise the skills they have that will solve their audience's problems while giving them the confidence to articulate their knowledge in a non-boastful way is what I do. I coach you to paint word pictures of how your intervention solves the audience's problem. Epilogue: Talk honestly and openly to yourself and admit that there are areas where you could do with a little more confidence. Wellington Water believes a Council top-up could help with a feared water shortage this summer. The City Council is giving the water entity up to $2 million dollars. The Wellington region loses about 45 percent of its supply in leaks. Wellington Water Chief Executive Tonia Haskell says they are asking the regional council to let it also take more water from rivers. Nearly a million Kiwis are missing out on tens of thousands of dollars at retirement, because they're failing to take advantage of Kiwisaver. A report by financial advisory service National Capital estimates half of those people were not contributing anything to the scheme, while another half million were not saving enough to qualify for an annual government top-up. The government has just extended the deadline to April 2025 for people to top up their National Insurance contributions. For many people approaching retirement, especially women, it offers a fantastic opportunity for them to increase their state pension by thousands of pounds by paying in only a few extra hundred.
