Sam Newman, Mike Sheahan and Don Scott - 'You Cannot Be Serious'

John Setka (born September 1964) is an Australian trade unionist. He is secretary of the Victorian-Tasmanian division of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, and Energy Union which also administers the South Australian division under a temporary arrangement. He is a controversial figure in the Australian trade union movement. He is known for his strong support at a grassroots level, especially among the rank and file of the CFMMEU. His supporters regard him as a strong advocate against political, legal, and industrial opponents; the national secretary of the union, Christy Cain has called him one of the "most fair dinkum union people in this country". On the other hand, Setka's political opponents have derided him as a bully, and criticized his purported stance that it can be necessary to break the law to pursue union interests. He has also faced strong criticism for alleged public remarks on the topic of domestic violence, and a guilty plea for harassing his ex-wife via text, issues that contributed to his formal expulsion from the Australian Labor Party in 2019. In recent years Setka's personal life has been the subject of considerable media attention. His marital breakdown, and associated legal issues, have led to additional public criticism. John Setka was born to a Croatian family. His father was a labourer named Bob Setka, who survived the West Gate Bridge collapsein 1970, one of the worst industrial accidents caused by employer negligence in Victoria's history. Setka began working as a labourer at the age of 19. He began involvement with trade unionism first after joining the Builders Labourers Federation. He was mentored by state secretary John Cummins. Under John's leadership, media commentators have noted the "pervasive power of the CFMEU over construction companies". In 2012 he unsuccessfully attempted to sue the opposition leader Tony Abbott in defamation after Abbott called him a thug. In 2015, Setka encouraged workers within the Rail, Tram and Bus Union to strike during the Australian Football League finals to "use finals fever to their advantage in their bitter industrial fight with Metro Trains and Yarra Trams". The decision was criticised by Victorian Labor minister Jacinta Allan due to the strike's impact on businesses. Setka openly criticised the former prime minister Kevin Rudd in 2018. During a speech, he said: 'he's one of the worst fucking Labor PMs we've ever had ... (because) ... he kept the ABCC and coercive powers and he wants to talk about workers and the trade union movement.' Setka is known for his public condemnation of the ABCC and its staff. In 2017 he publicly threatened to target the home addresses of building watchdog inspectors and lobby local footy clubs so their "kids will be ashamed of who their parents are". These comments were controversial. On the other hand, he is regarded by many in the union movement, especially in the industrial left faction; to be a robust and genuine union activist. He has in the past had strong support from Luke Hilakari, among other prominent leaders in the trade union movement. In August 2022 a unanimous ballot at the South Australian branch of the CFMMEU brought about a co-operative administration arrangement between that branch, and the Victorian-Tasmanian division led by Setka. In 2015 Setka was arrested and forced to appear in court to face blackmail charges. On the day of his court appearance, around 2,000 CFMEU members and other unionists gathered outside the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 8 December to show their support. Three years later, the Victorian prosecution office dropped the charges, a decision that the Magistrate Charles Rozecwajg described in court as 'very sensible. Setka spoke outside of court saying that he had been the victim of a witch hunt. He later sued a group of executives from the company Boral, successfully obtaining a settlement after alleging they conspired in the tort of malicious prosecution. Expulsion from Labor In June 2019 John attended a meeting of his union's national executive. It was reported by The Age that during that meeting, he made comments to the effect that the work of Rosie Batty had left men with fewer rights. Setka publicly denied that he made the comments. Following the reporting of these comments, the Australian Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese proposed to expel Setka from the Labor Party. John publicly objected to this attempt at expulsion and claimed that there was "dirty politics at work". He made an implicit claim that he was the victim of a witch hunt, driven by his "view of where the union should be in regard to the ALP, and some people probably don't share that view". Reactions to John's behavior and his potential expulsion were mixed. The CFMEU Victoria branch (that he controlled) threatened to cut financial support to the ALP if he was expelled.  The NSW and WA branches also expressed their support. Numerous politicians, as well as the ACTU secretary Sally McManus called on John to step down. Additional pressure upon John arose after the Senate crossbencher Jacqui Lambie threatened political blackmail, making a demand that he steps down or she would vote for a bill strongly opposed by the union movement. This threat was made during a lunch invitation at her Tasmanian house. In the midst of these events, John pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to harass a person in the Melbourne magistrate's court. The victim was identified as his wife at the time, Emma Walters. Following this, more than a dozen individual unions, including the three biggest in the country, renewed their calls for Setka to step aside. Some factional allies of Setka, like the then head of the RTBU Luba Grigorovitch , maintained their support. In July, John applied for an injunction at the Victorian Supreme Court to stop the expulsion decision. He argued at court that the ALP national executive didn't have the legal power to expel him, and that it was instead a matter for the Victorian State party branch. The court decided in August 2019 that the motion to expel Mr. Setka was 'outside the court's jurisdiction', and that it 'could not interfere with internal decisions of voluntary unincorporated associations'. In October he commenced an appeal of this decision, before withdrawing. After its withdrawal, the ALP immediately expelled him.

Really Interesting Women - The PodcastEpisode 114Nicole Livingstone OAMNicole Livingstone was part of the Australian swimming team for twelve years - starting when she was in Grade 8!  She went to 3 successive Olympic Games winning a silver and 2 bronze medals. She was a short course world record holder in backstroke and, in fact, still holds the longest winning sequence in history of any Australian swimmer (male or female) at the national titles. Ten consecutive backstroke titles. More than enough achievements for one lifetime...but then she went on to a long and successful career in the media as a host and commentator and joined a number of not-for-profit boards including co-founding, with her sister, Ovarian Cancer Australia. And then another opportunity presented itself in 2017 and after an exhaustive process, she was announced as the Australian Football League's head of women's football and is now responsible for managing the hugely successful AFL Women's competition. You've probably seen Nicole on television in some capacity over the last 20 years or so, but, like me, you probably didn't know the whole story. An increasing number of women with links to New Zealand are forging a path in a distinctly Australian sport. Clubs across the 18-team women's Australian Football League have players who have represented New Zealand in other sports, grown up in Aotearoa, lived here temporarily or have Kiwi parents. Their reasons for picking up a Sherrin, the name for the ball in Australian Rules, differ. Sports reporter Felicity Reid caught up with some of the players.

Julie Moncrieff Anthony (nee Lush) was born on a farm at Galga, South Australia. The population of the location was 15 and by necessity cultivated a vivid imagination in young Julie and a talent to amuse.  She began singing in her teens with a local band, an engagement instigated by her enthusiastic father.  In 1970 Julie won an amateur television talent quest which led to regular appearances on Ernie Sigley's Adelaide Tonight. She moved to Sydney, making television appearances and performing on the club and cabaret circuit, eventually extending her music-making to international tours. An engagement at the Hong Kong Hilton in 1973 was followed by lead role in the Australian production of the musical Irene. Julie was keen to diversify her talents, so without any acting credits presented herself to J.C. Williamson's to extend her performance repertoire. Guided by the legendary Betty Pounder, Julie Anthony became Irene O'Dare and three years after the Australian production, she starred in the West End at the Adelphi Theatre. The Play and Players of London honoured her with the Best Newcomer for 1976. She returned to Australian television and appeared in three national specials. Julie won the Sammy and Penguin awards for Best Television Variety Performer. Tours of America followed and Julie Anthony worked with Bill Cosby, Roy Clarke and Merv Griffin. Julie played Maria in The Sound Of Music in 1983 for JCW.  For the 1988 World Expo in Brisbane, Anthony was invited to sing with the renewed Seekers, joining the group as lead singer from 1988-89. The same year she returned to the stage in I Do!, I Do!.  In 1990, she was awarded AM in the Order of Australia for services to the entertainment industry. Anthony teamed with jazz musician Don Burrows in 1994 for tours, including the Jazz and Blues Festival at the Gold Coast International Hotel in 1995. A year later she returned to cabaret with a season at the Tilbury Hotel in Sydney.  Julie Anthony's voice is known to millions for singing the national anthem live at various formal events and in recorded versions that have included the broadcast closing time of ABC television, Australian Football League finals, the opening of Australia's new Parliament House and the opening of the Sydney Olympics. Her theatrical ventures continued in productions of Spamalot as The Lady of the Lake and The Mikado as Katisha. She starred in a biographical musical at the Sydney Theatre Company, titled Lush! And for several decades performed with Simon Gallaher in live concerts and on television, proving they had a remarkable vocal blend. Their hit series of concerts titled Together At Last produced an album which was recorded live in concert. This album was in addition to Julie's extensive recording output of some 15 albums and various singles. Julie Anthony has won Australia's prestigious Mo Award for entertainer of the year three times and best female variety performer nine times. To the dissatisfaction of a lot of leaders out there, there's no definitive, cookie cutter way to manage and get the best out of people.  But to Dr. Fergus Connolly, that's actually a good thing. The Great Coaches: Leadership & Life

Our Great Coach on this episode is Trevor Gleeson Trevor is an Australian basketball coach who transitioned into coaching in 1984 at the age of 18 after an industrial accident. Over the next decade he rose through the coaching ranks leading men's and women's teams in regional competitions. In 1997 he started coaching in the National Basketball League in Australia in Assistant roles before taking similar positions in America and South Korea. In 2006 he returned to Australia as the Head Coach of the Townsville Crocodiles in the National Basketball League, and for 5 years led them to the post season, ultimately leading to him being named the Coach of the year in 2011. In a move that illustrates his coaching prowess, he then switched sports and was a skills coach in the Australian Football League for 3 years under the legendary Alastair Clarkson. In 2013 he returned to Basketball as the Head Coach of the Perth Wildcats and led them to 5 Championships in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020. In 2021 he moved to the NBA as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors. Trevor is the type of coach that makes the individual feel like they are contributing to something bigger than themselves, through the behaviour and attitude choices they make every day. He is unflinchingly honest and a believer in the merits of a strong work ethic to succeed both on and off the court. He is also that rare breed of coach, who has worked at the elite level in 2 different sports; and this dexterity, re-enforces his credentials as a teacher, leader and importantly; life-long learner. And in this interview you will hear him talk about being driven by curiosity to find the best treatments, ways to communicate and skills and techniques. Other key highlights include: How a close relationship with players allows him to have quick, heated conversations during the game without fear of it derailing the players performance. And that building this relationship takes time and isn't something you can short cut. How one of the major change he has seen over 30 years of coaching is that when he first started, when he told players to jump they would ask how high, whereas now they ask why. And how we believes that there should be only one ego in the team, and that is the teams collective ego. This was a terrific conversation, it was one of the first we did for the podcast, and we hope you get as much out of it as we did.
