This week, we watch one of the scariest movies we've ever seen.  This film depicts the real life tragedy of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack, and does it almost too convincingly.  A very well made movie that we'd be hard pressed to recommend, but if you can tolerate violence (or you think you can), this one is worth a watch.  Hotel Mumbai (2018), directed by Anthony Maras.

Hotel Mumbai, the feature debut from Australian writer-director Anthony Maras, deserved more attention when it premiered in the United States earlier this year. Now that the film has premiered in the most important country on its release calendar, India, we spoke to Maras about the horrific attacks that inspired Hotel Mumbai and the heroism of the real people involved.Maras' story is essential listening for anyone making their first film. Many surprises that seemed likely to doom the project turned out to be its salvation. He talks about how he won it back from The Weinstein Co. after the Harvey Weinstein story emerged, the injury that delayed shooting, and other hurdles. But he never loses sight of the real focus on the tragedy, its victims and its survivors.Hotel Mumbai is now streaming on Hulu.If you enjoy this interview, please check out similar interviews and features at MovieMaker.com.Here's a breakdown of our talk, with timestamps:1:45: Anthony Maras discusses the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, and how he decided to make Hotel Mumbai.4:45: Maras talks about the altruism of the people targeted in the attacks. "You had kitchen staff from the Taj Hotel who were literally stuffing pots and pans and baking trays down their shirts. These were to act as bullet -proof vests as they were shielding their guests from gunfire."8:20: How Dog Day Afternoon influenced Hotel Mumbai.10:45: How the filmmakers made decisions about how to portray the terrorists in the film.20:30: How Maras and co-writer John Collee researched the film, and why Dev Patel was determined to make Hotel Mumbai.23:00: Hotel Mumbai was initially a Weinstein Co. release. The problem with films based on real life events is that one is already aware of how things will pan out. And so, the challenge lies in keeping us invested in the story. In this respect, Hotel Mumbai excels. We plunge headlong into the events that led to the dastardly terrorist attacks on Mumbai in 2008, and director Anthony Maras – who has also written the screenplay along with John Collee – keeps his hold on the narrative steady and focused. The cold efficiency with which violence is depicted and how it disrupts the rhythm of everyday life in the busy lanes of Mumbai has an accompanying foreboding tone that is hard to ignore. Even as the background music is kept to the minimum, the unmissable sound of ricocheting bullets keeps us at the edge of our seats. A casual conversation between two people is suddenly disrupted as one of them drops dead. For most of us, the memories of 26/11 are still fresh in our minds even 11 years on. We were glued to our TV sets as we followed the tense moments of the crisis; and so the use of real-time footage is both clever and hugely impactful. In fact, the film even manages to astutely show the many lapses in security that happened due to the live coverage of the attack by media. The gaze is democratic. We didn’t know what would happen last week in Christchurch, New Zealand when we watched this film, which is based on the real-life stories of the staff and guests of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, caught up in a terrorist attack on 26 November 2008. We still want to review the film, because we think it’s important that these stories are told, but we understand that some listeners may find both the film and the discussion of it upsetting. An Indian-Australian co-production, from first-time director Anthony Maras, and featuring the wonderful Dev Patel and Armie Hammer, Hotel Mumbai gives an incredibly tense and taut view of a coordinated terrorist attack unfolding and the people caught up in it.
