Sumit Sharma and Chris Mitchell from Breaking Atoms podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Sumit's choice American Gangster. American Gangster (2007) is biographical crime thriller based on Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Directed by Ridley Scott and screenplay by Steven Zaillian based on the The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson. It's stacked cast features Denzel Washington as Frank Lucas, Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Huey Lucas, Josh Brolin as Detective Trupo, RZA as Moses Jones, Cuba Gooding Jr. as Nicky Barnes, Armand Assante as Dominic Cattano, Idris Elba as Tango and Common as Turner Lucas. In 1960s Harlem Frank Lucas is Bumpy Johnson's right-hand man. When Bumpy dies of a heart attack Frank sees an opportunity to innovate in the drug trade by buying directly from the source in Vietnam and thus cutting out the middle man. Not only that, he trademarks his superior heroin as ‘Blue Magic' and its affordability eliminates the competition. All is going well for Frank until he comes under scrutiny from aspiring lawyer and honest detective Richie Roberts. American Gangster is solid crime drama with a standout performance from Denzel Washington. Like with many Hollywood adaptations what is true and what is there for dramatic effect is unclear but it does make a compelling story of a true life figure. Recommendability scores for American Gangster were high, with a runtime of nearly three hours repeat viewing scores were lower to give an overall rating of 3.88. Is nuclear power the key to a carbon-neutral future or an accident waiting to happen? Non-hydro renewables such as wind and solar are predicted to play a major role in the future. However, one of these energy solutions has divided public opinion more than others. To mention the name "nuclear" is to conjure up the boogie man or "he who must not be named". By 2050, some 10 billion people will need some form of energy to eat, travel, work and protect themselves from the weather. McKinsey's Energy 2050 research report predicts that demand for electricity will grow twice as fast as demand for transport, while at the same time fossil fuels will decline. So how will we power the future? In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou Agbo-Bloua delves into the controversial topic of nuclear power, exploring its history, potential benefits and risks in the context of the global energy transition. He also highlights the dual nature of nuclear energy as both a powerful source of clean energy and a potentially catastrophic force capable of altering life at the atomic level. To explore the issue further, Kokou orchestrates a virtual Oxford-style debate between experts for and against nuclear power. The pro-nuclear side includes Bill Gates, Ernest Moniz, George Monbiot and James Hansen, advocating for nuclear power as a necessary tool to combat climate change. The anti-nuclear side includes Tom Steyer and Mark Jacobson, who criticise its economic feasibility and safety concerns. Each expert presents their opening statement, outlining their position and the key matters surrounding nuclear power. This episode will help you understand the fears, facts, and fission, so that you can make up your own mind about nuclear power.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. Coming from a broad background, Chris understands what it means to have a human to human conversation and put together the pieces of our systemic puzzle in a clear and compelling way. What role could nuclear play for our future energy needs - and how are different countries making use of it today? How can we prioritize the health and safety of people under energetic and resource constraints? Most of all, how do we listen to others that we don't agree with - regardless of the issue - to foster the diverse perspectives necessary to navigate the coming challenges of the human predicament?  About Chris Keefer: Chris Keefer MD, CCFP-EM is a Staff Emergency Physician at St Joseph's Health Centre and a Lecturer for the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. You certainly hear a lot about the energy transition (especially if you listen to this podcast). Is it a dream to reach 100% renewables? How do we go from here to there? What are the obstacles towards this goal? To address those questions, I had the fantastic opportunity to interview Prof. Mark Jacobson from Stanford University. Mark Jacobson is a Professor since 1994. He mainly works  on two fields: air pollution and energy (you'll hear in the interview how Mark connects the two). His work has a profound impact on the research community but also at the business and political levels. He is one of the few scientists having been on the talk show Late Night with David Letterman and at the same time if you have a look at his academic track record, you'll be amazed, it shows the breadth and depth of his expertise. I would have loved recording a discussion for half a day but we only had a bit more than an hour so I'll dive into some important aspects for me but I strongly suggest you to check out the show notes and read some of the many works he has authored. To achieve a 100% renewable energy system worldwide by 2050 affordable or not? Apart from the maturing technology, like solar PV and wind power, are we too late to develop some alternative technologies such as carbon capture and storage, direct air capture, geoengineering, and small modular nuclear reactor? With the tightening time window to control carbon emissions in order to keep the global temperature rise on average by 2100 well below 2 degree Celsius, what can policymakers from major economies do to make the most use of the available and scalable low-carbon energy technologies? One of the best scholars who are able to answer these questions is Dr. Mark Jacobson from Stanford University. Over 15 years ago, he proposed a 100% renewable energy system based on water, wind, and solar energy (WWS) and has been working and researching the relevant energy policy and planning solutions for a variety of countries, states, and cities ever since. In this episode, Professor Jacobson discusses his ideas and research findings on the WWS system. Although you may not agree with most or even some of his arguments, the discussions are definitely to expand your learning on the future energy system and some key policy issues of addressing climate change. As he mentioned at the end of the talk, educating ourselves on such complicated climate and energy policy issues could be the first action point for each one of us. Support the show

"   Stanford's Mark Z. Jacobson's career has focused on better understanding air pollution and global warming problems and developing large-scale clean, renewable energy solutions to them. Toward that end, he has developed and applied three-dimensional (3-D) atmosphere-biosphere-ocean computer models and solvers to simulate and understand air pollution, weather, climate, and renewable energy systems. He has also developed roadmaps to transition countries, states, cities, and towns to 100% clean, renewable energy for all purposes and computer models to examine grid stability in the presence of 100% renewable energy. Jacobson has been a professor at Stanford University since 1994. His research crosses two fields: Atmospheric Sciences and Energy, each discussed next.

Jeff Gibbs is the director of Planet of the Humans, a feature-length documentary released in 2019 which generated controversy because of its full-throated criticism of alternative energy, and even led some academics --  including Michael Mann. Leah Stokes, and Mark Jacobson -- to demand that Michael Moore, the executive director of the film, issue an apology. In this episode, Gibbs talks about what has happened since the film was released, why “green energy is delusional energy,” why he believes we are “in denial that we are reaching” the limits of the planet to sustain so many humans, and why he sees climate activist Bill McKibben as the “environmental Jesus.” (Recorded on January 26, 2023)

Listeners may recall two years ago this past month I interviewed Professor Jacobson regarding his text “100% Clean Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything.”  I noted in my introduction to that 2021 interview Prof. Jacobson argued since 2009 100% of the world's energy supply could be produced via solar, wind and water power within 20 to 30 years.  The barriers to a 100% conversion to renewables are not, he continues to argue, technological or even economic but social and political.  In “No Miracles Needed,” Prof Jacobson argues we can transition to 80% wind, water and solar (WWS) power by 2030 and to 100% by 2050, ideally 2035. During this 33-minute interview, Prof. Jacobson begins by explaining what three problems converting to 100% clean energy simultaneously solve, identifies the technologies that allow for 100% conversion to WWS, what few remaining technologies are still in development and massive efficiencies associated with WWS versus fossil fuel combustion.  He discusses the numerous reasons why subsidizing carbon capture technology is, as he states, a scam, how hospitals can readily decarbonize and concludes with a critique of Inflation Reduction subsidies.                     Prof. Mark Z. Jacobson's career has focused on better understanding air pollution and global warming problems and developing large-scale clean, renewable energy solutions to them.  Toward that end, he has developed and applied three-dimensional atmosphere-biosphere-ocean computer models and solvers to simulate air pollution, weather, climate, and renewable energy. He has also developed roadmaps to transition states and countries to 100% clean, renewable energy for all purposes and computer models to examine grid stability in the presence of high penetrations of renewable energy.  He has numerous awards including being recognized as the #1 impactful world scientist in Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences among those first publishing past 1985, the World Visionary Clean Tech Influencer of the Year, Clean Tech Business Club (2022) and one of the World's 100 most influential people in climate policy, Apolitical (2019, 2022).  Prof. Jacobson earned a BA in economics, a BA in civil engineering and a MS in civil engineering from Stanford and a MS and PhD in atmospheric sciences from UCLA.Information on "No Miracles Needed" is at: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/no-miracles-needed/8D183E65462B8DC43397C19D7B6518E3.Mark's recent Samuel Lawrence Foundation interview noted during this interview is at: .       This is a public episode. The energy crisis is here! Demand for energy has been growing faster than supply and this has caused a rise in prices, plus increased use of non-renewable sources. It affects all of us, from individuals to businesses to governments. Population growth, climate change, technology advances and even political conflicts have added to the problem. Natural disasters like earthquakes can also disrupt production and affect our energy supplies. This crisis can be costly for everyone - people get hit with higher prices; companies face delays and higher costs; countries sometimes need to borrow money for fuel imports due to limited stockpiles. Luckily there are steps being taken - people are investing more in renewable energy sources. Fossil fuels, and other non-renewable energy sources, like coal, oil, and natural gas, release a lot of carbon dioxide when burned. This increases global warming, leading to more intense storms and rising sea levels. Plus, disasters like droughts happen more often. The destruction of forests from deforestation makes it even worse. These energy sources also cause health problems everywhere. Air pollution from burning them can lead to asthma, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and even damage little ones' brains. Mark Jacobson and Rahul Srinivasan talk with Host Bernice Butler to help us unpack and understand this more as we look at the energy crisis on two fronts: our health and our environment. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/healthy-radio/support

I have been trying to get Shad Frazier on the podcast for the last year. We've been “LinkedIn friends” for a while now, and I always find his takes thoughtful and insightful. So today, we have him! One of the posts we talk about is this one- which is Shad's thoughtful response to a study that was released by Mark Jacobson out of Stanford University. As I discussed with Robert Bryce last week, and do again with Shad this week, there are so many flaws in the models that project we can get to net zero in any realistic way. In the meantime, here's Shad's post on it. I hope you enjoy the episode. "Lies travel faster than the truth" Thomas Shelby An article in the Washington Post today based upon a scientific simulation completed by Stanford says that we could replace all fossil fuels with Wind, Solar, and water energy and reduce our power consumption at the same time. I wonder if we have lost our understanding of the scientific method. We have a higher learning institution that built a model based upon facts that they knew but didn't understand the energy chain or the efficiency loss of the electrical market. Did they start with the answer they wanted and work backward till they got a model to solve their problem? Stanford Modeled the storm URI of 2021 and said we could have gone through URI if we just pushed for more renewables. In 2021 ERCOT the Texas grid added 8000 MW of new power generation 40.8% wind and 35.6% solar. The problem still stems from that during URI, wind and solar only made up less than 10% of the power generated when we needed it most. So how does Stanford say we fix that issue? We have to build home power storage. So their solution to the problem is that we need more batteries in everyone's homes. When unreliable power like solar and wind don't work, we can pull off a battery for our power off of home solar panels. This stored power will reduce our electricity demand in our homes and cause the need for energy to decrease. Here is a real-world example of this case. Each home would need 6x400W panels to charge an electric car each night to drive just 30 miles the next day. That is to charge one electric vehicle. To charge two cars, we need 12 panels. Then the mean home would need another four panels to run the house. So now we need 16 panels. That is a cost of $64,000 to electrify each home in the US. Converting that current gasoline and grid power price based upon national averages, the average us home pays $8.62/day to power their home and drive their car each day. (Gas usage is total gas used per day versus cars or 337 B gals/286 B Cars or 1.17 gals per day, Home power is estimated at $117/Month per us home) It takes 7400 days to pay for the solar panels, and another 1200 days to pay for the battery in the home or 23.5 Years. If we converted everyone over to solar and wind today, it would payout by almost 2050. Who likes that type of ROR. Not to mention the space needed to build those solar panels on homes in big cities with large apartment buildings. Science is wonderful, but reality and science have to work together to bring truth to light.
