On the latest episode of The South Florida Roundup, we discussed how the government shutdown could cause skyrocketing premiums for those who use government subsidized healthcare. In Florida, that's nearly 3 million people. And how SNAP running out of funding further compounds the affordability squeeze [1:06]. We also checked in on the recovery from Hurricane Melissa which devastated the Caribbean earlier this week. We heard from those mobilizing aid efforts here[18:30]. And we discussed Canvas, a 2006 film set and filmed in Hollywood, which comes home this weekend [34:10].

In this month's movie review, Justin and I discuss the 2019 Quentin Tarantino movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood! This movie takes you back to a time where you see what an actors life was like in the late 60's. Though the movie is entertaining, it is filled with hidden history linked to the Manson murders, that still terrorizes people today! Prior to the movie review, Justin and I discuss the Charlie Kirk murder, the Russian girls stabbing in Charlotte, and the price of free speech! We end the episode by leaving a review for this month's drink, whiskey sours, enjoy!

Simo is one of those guitarists you might not have heard of… but definitely should! A super friendly guy with a cool beard and a Telecaster in hand, a walking encyclopedia of music history, always busy and never one to say “no” to a new challenge - he's a true musical legend of Nashville. As a guitarist, songwriter and producer/engineer, Simo has worked with the likes of Jack White (Beyoncé Lemonade sessions), Phil Lesh, James McCartney, Tommy Emmanuel, David Kahne, Cowboy Jack Clement, Dave Cobb, Paul Worley, George Porter, Anson Funderburgh, Peter Collins, Joe Bonamassa, Chris Isaak, Samantha Fish and Baz Luhrmann on the soundtrack and score of the Elvis and upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic (Springsteen. Deliver Me From Nowhere). He is a former member of the Don Kelley Band (2007–2012), the historic house band at Robert's Western World in Nashville, Tennessee. He was also a member of the psychedelic rock band SIMO from 2012–2018 and has released four solo albums to date. This is a VERY exciting episode if you, like me, grew up watching the HBO's hit show GIRLS, have seen the Megan movies and also thought Jordan Peele's movie 'Get Out' was a cinematic masterpiece! I got the opportunity to chat to the incredible lead actress, Allison Williams! I asked Allison about the powerful messaging behind all her chosen projects. Starting with Girls, we discuss what was so groundbreaking at the time, being a Marine apologist and what would be different if Girls existed in todays current political climate. We then chatted through why Get Out struck a chord in so many people, the broken conversation about race in both America and Australia and how her character was developed. Finally, we talk about Megan 2.0 (in cinemas now!) and how that reflected current day politics around the use of Artificial Intelligence. A big thank you to Universal Studios

Throughout the 20th century, there was one fact that united fans, critics and the makers of onscreen media - that the big screen was better than the little one. Films dominance over television seemed like an unassailable truth - until it wasn't. The 21st century has seen the rise of TV as one of the most celebrated mediums in entertainment, luring actors and filmmakers who would previously have considered it to be a major step down for their career. Dee Reddy, Podcaster and Cultural commentator tells us more.

Hollywood stars: they don't make ‘em like they used to. While there are still many fine actors and actresses working in film and television today, very few have the megawatt star power that used to bring audiences to the theaters from the mid- to late 20th Century. We consider 16 film actors and actresses who made their big breaks prior to 1969, including: Cary Grant, Paul Newman, Judy Garland, Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Fred Astaire, Joan Crawford, Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Bette Davis, Gene Kelly, Gregory Peck, and Barbara Stanwyck. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Derek Mekita, Jonny Minogue, and Karissa Kloss as they discuss 16 of the biggest Hollywood legends who made their big breaks prior to 1969. THRILLS OF OLD TIME HOLLYWOOD MOVIES: 1/4: The Asteroid Hunter: A Scientist's Journey to the Dawn of our Solar System by Dante Lauretta (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Asteroid-Hunter-Scientists-Journey-System/dp/1538722941 On September 11, 1999, humanity made a monumental discovery in the vastness of space. Scientists uncovered an asteroid of immense scientific importance—a colossal celestial entity. As massive as an aircraft carrier and towering as high as the iconic Empire State Building, this cosmic titan was later named Bennu. Remarkable for much more than its size, Bennu belonged to a rare breed of asteroids capable of revealing the essence of life itself. But just as Bennu became a beacon of promise, researchers identified a grave danger. Hurtling through space, it threatens to collide with our planet on September 24, 2182. Leading the expedition was Dr. Dante Lauretta, the Principal Investigator of NASA's audacious OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission. Tasked with unraveling Bennu's mysteries, his team embarked on a daring quest to retrieve a precious sample from the asteroid's surface — one that held the potential to not only unlock the secrets of life's origins but also to avert an unprecedented catastrophe. A tale of destiny and danger, The Asteroid Hunter chronicles the high-stakes mission firsthand, narrated by Dr. Lauretta. It offers readers an intimate glimpse into the riveting exploits of the mission and Dr. Lauretta's wild, winding personal journey to Bennu and back. Peeling back the curtain on the wonders of the cosmos, this enthralling account promises a rare glimpse into the tightly woven fabric of scientific exploration, where technical precision converges with humanity's profound curiosity and indominable spirit. BIO Mark Steven Porro, a New Jersey native (Exit 163), earned an Industrial Design degree from The Ohio State University. After years of agency work, his love of acting led him to Hollywood, where he appeared in dozens of television, film, and stage productions. Mark also spent his twenty-eight years in Tinseltown, entrepreneuring. He started five non-profit companies. But hold the applause, none were intended to be. He now lives in the South of France. But hold your pity. He of sound mind and body chose to suffer in the heart of wine country where the locals insist his French isn't so bad—at least that's what he thinks they're saying. Mark is an award-winning designer, writer, director, and now a best-selling, award-winning author. He has written lots of jokes, several screenplays, and one award-winning short film. A Cup of Tea on the Commode—a sad, sweet, and funny debut memoir—chronicles his multitasking adventures of filling his mother's last years with love, laughter, and joy. Though not always successful, he came pretty damn close. https://acupofteaonthecommode.org/
