This week we are joined by winemaker Danielle Langlois of Lasseter Family Winery and wine director Christophe Tassan MOF, of Moon Hollow ahead of the second edition of the immersive Reach for the Moon wine event, June 1st at Monte Rosso. They provide expert opinions on the wines and vineyards of one of our favorite AVAs and share some of the great new wines they've made from the very different Moon Mountain District estates they represent. We even busted out a 2013 as a sneak peek into the highlight of the event–the Antonio Galloni-led master class, a celebration of the 10 vintage anniversary of the appellation's approval. We even get a cameo by the winegrower who has become synonymous with Moon Mountain District. Care to guess who? Today we're exploring viticulture on top of the world, the wines of Mendoza which is the most prolific wine-growing region of Argentina. In fact, Mendoza holds 75% of the total vineyards in Argentina and the largest number of wineries in the country. In this episode, we'll be talking about the diversity within Mendoza in all its corners from Lavalle to San Rafael so you'll benefit from having a map on hand to follow along. They'll take a deep dive into the Uco Valley from the highest peaks in Gualtallary that reach up to 1600 meters in elevation to the depths of La Consulta at 900 meters and everything in between from Special guest Joaquin Hidalgo guide the Thieves on their mountainous journey with perils of fist-sized hail, extreme drought and high elevation radiation . Hidalgo is the Argentinian and Chilean contributor to Vinous magazine, a publication created by Antonio Galloni. Like John and Sara, he's primarily a wine critic and seems to have been destined for this role as he holds a degree in Winemaking from the Liceo Agrícola, and also has a degree in Journalism from the National University of La Plata. For almost 20 years, Joaquín has been living in Buenos Aires where he writes about wine and food for several major media outlets including weekly columns for La Nación, the major national newspaper, and La Mañana de Neuquén. He co-founded vinomanos.com, the first mobile guide to Argentine wines. The Thieves question Joaquin about the increasing amount of research being undertaken by a new generation of producers that has led to the identification of micro-regions with different terroirs, reflecting the diverse character of Argentine viticulture. In particular, a recent study published earlier this year by the Catena Institute of Wine, founded by Dr. Laura Catena, that demonstrated measurable evidence for the existence of terroir in Argentina. The study led by Fernando Buscema and Roy Urvieta analyzed phenolic compounds in malbec wine to determine markers for vintage, climate and the expression of particular site and soil characteristics. To a very high degree of accuracy, they were able to identify wines from 23 plots, or parcela, over 12 different sites in Mendoza despite differences in vintage conditions. To find out more, join John and Sara with a glass of malbec in hand for a virtual trip to the foothills of the Andes. This podcast was created in partnership with the Wines of Argentina.

Italian Wine Podcast ep. 534: Get US Market Ready with Italian Wine People. Steve Raye sits down with Paul Quaglini There are reviews for geeks, and then there are reviews for the rest of the world,” said Paul Quaglini when asked if he believed in giving wines a numeric rating (the verdict: they’re a “necessary evil”). Paul is ABC’s wine supervisor covering the country of Italy who believes that people generally get too caught up in finding the perfect wine. “If you like it, it’s good wine. Your palate is the most important judge,” explained Paul. His palate’s favorite: Italian Sangiovese. If he had the option, Paul would love to host a dinner party at his house with special guests Piero Antinori, Abe Lincoln and Antonio Galloni, while serving Sangiovese, of course. Paul has had the pleasure of visiting Italy, most frequently the Tuscany area, about a dozen times and considers it to be his favorite travel destination. He loves to travel, but notes that if you’re not too into wine, “the trips would be grueling.” Incidents such as losing luggage or a delayed flight are merely minor hiccups to Paul. “You have to roll with the punches when you travel. Those are just inconveniences that become part of the story. Matt Dees is winemaker for Jonata, The Hilt, and The Paring. Today, we'll be talking about The Hilt's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County. Enjoy my conversation with Matt Dees. Matt began as head winemaker at the award-winning Jonata vineyard in 2004. Since then, he's overseen the transformation of the estate's dry, rocky, sandy landscape into one of the most respected sites in Central California. Rancho Salsipuedes, where The Hilt wines make their home, provides vineyards planted on land nearly 13 unobstructed miles from the ocean on the west. This unique, large and sprawling property offers a range of altitudes, aspects, soil types, and microclimates, giving winemaker Matt Dees a patchwork of vineyard parcels from which to select grapes and create wines with distinctive styles. Over the years, his wines have gained widespread acclaim from critics such as Robert Parker, Antonio Galloni, and Stephen Tanzer. https://www.thehiltestate.com/

This is on a very important issue that I think is going to shake up the wine critic world permanently. Kind of a big deal. Here’s a link to the Decanter.com story that covered this: Parker v. Galloni If you don’t want to read it, here’s the short of the story: Famed American critic Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate, who single-handedly sets prices and makes reputations for wines and who has arguably changed the way winemakers make wine so they can garner high scores,  sold a large portion of his brand to a group of Singapore investors and shook up the structure of the subscription-only newsletter. His named successor for evaluating California wine, Antonio Galloni, stepped down after the move and started his own Web site. He decided to withhold all the scores for Sonoma wines he had conducted prior to the sale, stating that he would publish [...]
