Rimapere 2022 Baron Edmonde de Rothschild Plot 101 Sauvignon Blanc $45 Why I chose it: Kiwi wine with a French accent Owned by the prestigious French wine group “Baron Edmonde de Rothschild” Sauvignon blancdoesn't get much better than this”. Bottle age has mellowed the wine and added complex flavours. Prestige label “Plot 101” What does it taste like? Hand-picked, aged on lees and with 50% fermented in barrels to give the wine a rich texture while retaining a strong fruit emphasis. Serious, complex sauvignon. Why it's a bargain: It's not cheap but it is very good, which in my book makes it a good value wine. Where can you buy it? Glengarry Wines. Auckland $37.99. Food match? Most seafood dishes, my favourite is green-lipped mussel fritters. Will it keep? Good drinking now, should get even more interesting over the next 2-3 years. So, for this episode, we've set her a challenge: to pair four of our fragrance choices with festive tipples. Then, WE are challenged - pairing four drinks Helena's chosen to fragrances we feel they'd match with!We had SUCH fun (and learned a lot) during this episode, and hope you enjoy as much as we did. Joining me on today's episode of the English Wine Diaries is award-winning wine expert and social media sensation, Tom Gilbey. The Gilbey name is synonymous with wine and spirits. The Gilbey family were the first English family to buy a vineyard in Bordeaux in 1875 and subsequently became the most prominent wine and spirits merchant in the UK, selling one in every three bottles of wine consumed, and building a portfolio that included Smirnoff Vodka, J&B whisky and their very own Gilbeys Gin.Tom spent much of his childhood at his great-grandfather's chateaux and naturally caught the wine bug. He began making wine at the tender age of 23 before becoming a wine merchant and now runs a wine events business, renowned for its energetic and entertaining approach to wine. In recent years Tom has brought this engaging style of wine education to a new audience on social media, working with his son, Fred, to produce hilarious wine reviews and essentially take the piss out of the perceived stuffiness of the wine world.  But, if you haven't yet caught him on Instagram or TikTok, then you may have seen him splashed across the news last spring when he ran the London Marathon, blind tasting 20-odd wines along the way and raising hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity. I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds Tom's expertise and enthusiasm for bringing wine to a new generation a huge breath of fresh air.We talk about his 'Eddie the Eagle' post-marathon week, which saw him interviewed by news stations across the globe, how and why he is so passionate about bringing wine to a new audience and exactly what it's like to be a 'Wine Wanker'. Bob's Best Buys: Rimapere Baron Edmond de Rothschild 2024 Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, $30  Why I chose it:                       - Top vintage - Best of Marlborough with a French accent - Sauvignon doesn't get much better than this - Delicious now but no rush - It has great purity and power - Due to be released, but buy it while stocks last    What does it taste like?   A delicious sauvignon blanc with real finesse. Flavours are a medley of passion fruit, lime zest, guava, and a suggestion of feijoa. A vibrant and refreshing wine with appealing purity. It has a strong Marlborough signature with a subtle French accent.     Why it's a bargain:   It's not the cheapest sauvignon around, in fact as sauvignon goes it is moderately expensive, but is also very, very good. In my book it offers good value.    Where can you buy it?  It is just about to be released so check out your nearest fine wine retailer. When ordering in advance, don't forget to enquire about a discount.    What's a good food match?   The folk at Rimapere recommend pairing it with salads, white meats, or fish in sauce dishes. I can't argue with that.    LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wine: Durvillea 2023 Sauvignon Blanc $18  Why I chose it:- Terrific wine, especially considering the difficult vintage (cyclone Gabriella) - Entry level wine for Astrolabe. Entry level price but not entry level quality. - You might remember the MV Rena grounded on the Astrolabe reef in 2021. By chance there were a couple of containers of Astrolabe wine on board. The wine and MV Rena were lost.  What does it taste like?- One of the best examples of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from the 2023 vintage. Good intensity with restrained power and the perfect amount of punch without going overboard. Tantalising wine.                                                      Why it's a bargain:- Well below average price for SB but well above average quality  Where can you buy it?- Vino Fino and Wine Freedom in Christchurch both have it for $14.99  Food match?- A versatile food match. I like it with Feta cheese. Most seafoods are a happy match.  Will it keep?- Good for two years, perhaps more.    LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Oz Clarke is one of the world's leading wine experts. Clarke has been writing about wine since the 80's, starting as Britain's Sunday Express' first wine writer, and then moving over to become the Daily Telegraph's first Wine Correspondent.  He's written over forty books on the topic, recently releasing another: 'Oz Clarke's Story of Wine: 8000 Years, 100 Bottles.' Clarke has been wandering New Zealand, reacquainting himself with the best the industry has to offer, speaking at two inaugural winegrowers events as he does so.  He was last here in 2016, and told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking that since his last visit he's seen confidence come back into Chardonnay.  "It's about time," he said. "New Zealand makes fantastic Chardonnay, a lot of the best Chardonnay in the world." Clarke says it comes down to the fruit New Zealand winemakers have available to them. "I often say to winemakers, 'don't be frightened of it.'" "People would love to have the fruit that you have in New Zealand." He placed an emphasis on New Zealand wines being different to those produced elsewhere, admitting to Hosking that he's "full of excitement." "So my general feeling is that, that the place is in a pretty good, good state." New Zealand is known for its Sauvignon Blancs, and while there is an idea that the popularity can't last, Clarke doesn't necessarily agree. "The Sauvignon Blanc is not going to fade away, so long as you go on making it well." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As two women in the wine industry, what better topic for us to tackle than “Women in Wine”?!  Special guests include Lindsey Koch and Benedicte Rhyne who share their passion for wine and how they embraced their natural female skills and talents to make their way in the traditionally male oriented world of wine.  Meet Lindsey:  Lindsey started her career in Fort Worth, TX as a medical staffing agency before launching her own staffing company, Embracing her interest in wine she studied to become a certified Sommelier, she took the big leap of faith to start her own wine bar, WineHaus from the ground up.  After  8 years, she sold the business to a previous customer as she made the move out to Sonoma County, California to further her career in wine. Living in California Wine Country, Lindsey is currently the Estate Director for Small Vines Wines in Sebastopol, managing everything from marketing and customer outreach, to curating bespoke tasting experiences at the winery. Additionally, Lindsey and her husband always dreamed about starting their own winery and made the dream a reality, starting Curves & Edges Wines during the 2020 vintage. She focuses her efforts at Curves & Edges on two varieties that have always brought her great joy, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Meet Bénédicte: Bénédicte (Bennie) Rhyne is a native of Aix en Provence, France. She received her master in oenology (the study of wine) from the Université de Bourgogne (Dijon), had a successful experience at Chateau Pétrus, in Pomerol, Bordeaux, before global adventures to New Zealand and England landed her at Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma, California, as a member of the winemaking-team. Here she developed a”Meritage“program increasing the winery's production ten-fold between 1991-2001. Additionally she created a sophisticated wine laboratory with well -trained staff and quality control procedures. In 2002, Bénédicte and her family moved to Fredericksburg, TX and created a Wine Laboratory to compliment her Wine Country Consulting business.  Bénédicte served sixteen years as the winemaker of Mesa Vineyards, St. Genevieve Wine in Fort Stockton, Texas. She the spent 10 years as the winemaker of Kuhlman Cellars, a quickly growing winery whose door's opened in October of 2014 in Hye, Texas to produce fine quality and “Terroir” driven wines from Texas in the style of her native Provence.  Bennie is now focused full time on her wine consulting and launching her own wine label - stay tuned!Show Sponsors:> The Magnolia in Fort Worth> The Texas Wine ClubDon't forget to FOLLOW, LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE and let us know any topics you'd like us to cover!Cheers!
