Sam and the guys go through the major series now underway in the southern hemisphere – New Zealand-England, Australia-Wales, South Africa-Ireland, and Argentina-France – and look at the major lessons learned for the losing sides, the obvious work-ons for the winners, and take an early look at where changes might be made at the selection tables. And ponder who of England, Wales, and Ireland might be best equipped to square their series, while outlining what worked so well for New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland. Rugby podcasters Brett McKay and Harry Jones are joined on The 8-9 Combo by one of the leading analysts in the game, Sam Larner from the Beyond 80 show on RugbyPass TV, for a great chat on how we all consume the game of rugby via stats and analysis. What stats are meaningful? Which stats should you take notice of? Which one don't mean as much as you think? There aren't too many rugby people who have broken down rugby stats and rugby analysis better than Sam, and his Beyond 80 show goes to places where other shows just don't. Plus the guys run the rule over the 2024 Six Nations, well won by Ireland as expected, but with more than a few surprises following them in the final standings. One silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic is a jump in enrollments in public health degree programs and that's welcome news to Dr. Jan Carney, director of the Master of Public Health program at the University of Vermont's Larner College of Medicine, who believes the field needs a massive injection of personnel. “We need probably an 80% increase in people working in state and local health departments to have the essentials of public health.” As Vermont's former Commissioner of Health, Carney knows the challenges public health officials face and brings those insights to Larner's online-only MPH program, which covers the broad domains of the field from epidemiology to biostatistics to environmental health and also exposes students to the particular health challenges in rural communities. The program also prepares students for perhaps the biggest challenge facing the field: communication of health information in an era of misinformation. To that end, Carney is urging more ascertainment of how different groups of people prefer to receive information and is suggesting a major change in approach. “Maybe we can start to think of public health communication more as a conversation than a one-way information flow.” Join host Michael Carrese for insights from a national force in public health into how education is evolving to prepare public health practitioners for their vital work in challenging times for the profession.Mentioned in this episode: https://www.uvm.edu/publichealth/

A former bricklayer, Luke cut his teeth as lay pioneer minister in Luton serving communities affected by homelessness, violence and addiction. Luke is part-time priest-in-charge of the diverse parish of St Andrew in Luton and is studying for a doctorate in practical theology at the University of Roehampton, researching mission pneumatologies in the Church of England. Luke's teaching passions include mission, liberation theologies, and practical skills for social justice engagement. He is currently helping to develop an international network of scholars and activists engaging with theologies of labour and class struggle in partnership with the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice at Vanderbilt University Divinity School. Influenced by the radical Anglo-Catholic tradition, Luke's faith and ministry are shaped by a weaving of sacraments and social justice. A tertiary Franciscan, Luke loves to be outside cycling, kayaking, or walking with his family smiling at the birds and the trees. Confounding the Mighty: Stories of Church, Social Class and Solidarity Paperback – 28 Aug. 2023 It is long past time for the church to talk seriously about social class. Bringing together the stories of eight contemporary Christian ministers and theologians from working-class backgrounds, and putting their own life experiences into conversation with theological reflection, Confounding the Mighty explores what role class plays in the life of Churches, education establishments and social justice movements in 21st Century Britain and beyond. Written from a diverse variety of social locations, chapters explore how class relates to faith, Church, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, education, leadership, work and wider social justice issues. While lamenting injustice and personal experiences of oppression, this book suggests radical changes in how Christians, churches and theologians relate to class issues, pointing towards renewed structures and practices to bring class justice in churches and wider society. Recognizing that class is a thorny issue, the book seeks to bring a progressive theological perspective on class which pays close attention to related issues and promotes liberation for all.
Jonny, Ben and Adam are joined by Luke Larner to talk about the new book Confounding The Mighty: Stories of Church, Social Class and Solidarity which he edited. Dan and Ellen talk with Anne Larner, a civic leader in Newton, Massachusetts, a city of nearly 90,000 people on the border of Boston. Anne is on the Board of Directors of The Newton Beacon, an independent nonprofit news outlet covering Newton. Anne has a long track record of civic engagement in Newton and in Massachusetts. She moved to Newton in 1973, and has served on the School Committee, the Newton League of Women Voters, and has been a PTO president, among many roles. She also served 15 years at the MBTA Advisory Board, a public watchdog agency. Newton is a microcosm of what's happening in local news all over the country. Years ago, Newton had four local newspapers: The Newton Times, the Graphic, the Tribune and the TAB. But Gannett shut down a number of Massachusetts newspapers last year, including the print weekly, the Newton Tab. The Gannett digital site, Wicked Local, is still up and running. But content is regional. Ellen has a Quick Take on MLK50, the award-winning Memphis newsroom that focuses on poverty, power, and justice. They've received two major philanthropic grants that allow them to build for the future. And speaking of MLK50, executive editor Adrienne Johnson Martin was here at Northeastern ahead of Martin Luther King Day to give a talk on their work in Memphis. We'll feature some interviews from that by our colleague Dakotah Kennedy. Dan has news about Rebuild Local News, a new nonprofit organization that's advocating for solutions to the local news crisis. But wait. It's not new. And the solutions that it's proposing aren't new, either. Still, this is good news, which he explains.
Connected vehicles to me, for the longest time meant a car that has a SIM card and is connected to the Internet as an IoT device. But connected vehicles are, and should be, so much more than that. In a world where vehicles are able to communicate with each other, with other participants on the road and with infrastructure, the possibilities that can unlock are endless. So what is coming in the way of that happening? Technology? Policy? Universal standards? What role can startups, private corporations and government bodies play in accelerating the evolution to a world of truly connected, V2X equipped vehicles. We invited Wejo's Sarah Larner to get her perspective on V2V, V2X and all things connected car. Sarah helps us make sense of these topics, and shares with us how Wejo's vast dataset of 20 trillion data points forms the foundation of the automobile's future. We discuss how the impending explosion of V2X data will help automotive AI applications go from being reactive to proactive to predictive. All About UVM's Larner School of Medicine [Show Summary] The University of Vermont's Larner School of Medicine's new Associate Dean for Admissions, Leila Amiri, shares the hallmarks of the program, including its active learning curriculum and mission centered around respect, kindness, and cultural humility. Interview with Dr. Leila Amiri, Associate Dean for Admissions at UVM Larner School of Medicine [Show Notes] Welcome to the 494th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Thanks for joining me. Are you ready to apply to your dream medical schools? Are you competitive at your target programs? Accepted's medical school admissions quiz can give you a quick reality check. Just go to accepted.com/medquiz and complete the quiz, and you'll not only get an assessment but also tips on how to improve your chances of acceptance. Plus, it's all free. Dr. Leila Amiri, UVM Larner's new, as of June 2022, Associate Dean for Admissions, comes to Larner from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, where she was Associate Dean for Admissions and Recruitment. Previously, she was Director of Admissions and Financial Aid for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. She holds a Ph.D. from North Central University and an MA and BS degree from the University of South Florida. Amiri is a member of the Association of American Colleges Advancing Holistic Review and Alignment Working Group, National Chair of the AAMC BA/MD Affiliate Group and National Chair for the Committee on AAMC Professional Development Initiative. Dr. Amiri was also a guest last year in her previous role, and it's a pleasure to have her back on Admissions Straight Talk. Can you give us an overview of UVM Larner's College of Medicine's program focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:12] I'll be happy to. At Larner College of Medicine, we have a big history of training medical students. We're actually celebrating our bicentennial, so the class that's meeting for 2023 will be the 200th class that we've seated. We've come a long way in terms of the educational model. We're most known for our active learning model. Students are really at the center of our learning model and its active, student-centered learning all based on educational pedagogy and adult learning principles. There's a lot of community engagement with our students here and at our clinical sites which are in Vermont and in Connecticut. What does active learning mean in practical terms? [3:11] When you look at educational philosophy and pedagogy, adult learners need to really be invested in what they're learning. Not only do they need to be invested in what they're learning, but they also have to find meaning and value in it. They have to be at the center of constructing the information. There's very little lecturing that happens here for our students. There's time that they spend on their own before they come to class. Think of a flipped classroom model. They spend a lot of time on their own looking at basic information and then when they join us in the classroom setting, there's a lot of group activity, engaging with their peers, and working through problems. It's not completely problem-based learning, but there's problem-based learning, case-based learning, and team-based learning. We have all of these different models where students are not sitting there just as recipients of information, but really they're constructing the information with each other as they're going through the different phases of their learning. They're getting cases, they're getting problems, and they're working in teams. When you think about the way these things look, they become progressively more complex and progressively more sophisticated in terms of the case that they're engaging with. For example, they might not receive all of the information that they need, which is typical in a clinical setting. They will get a patient scenario and there'll be some gaps in that knowledge.

But somehow, despite massive support and petitions, he was never awarded for his bravery. This is a wild story, and a fascinating insight to an horrific event.Website: DodgeWoodall.comTikTok: @DodgeWoodallInstagram: @Dodge.WoodallLinkedIn: Dodge WoodallYouTube: Dodge Woodall Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Master Your Setup with Doran Larner Show Notes: Bow hunter Doran Larner has learned a lot over his years of hunting elk. Today, he's here to talk about something really important: mastering your setup. I call it “building the room,” but basically, you need to have a mastery of the small area that you are setting up to be your kill zone. You need to identify the hangup spots that these animals will stop at, and use them to your advantage. Doran learned this the hard way one time when he got in a hurry and didn't pay enough attention to his immediate surroundings. He was calling in a big bull, thinking the animal was going to cross in front of him where he was waiting at full draw. What he failed to spot was the game trail two yards behind him. The bull sped up the game trail, blew right by Doran, and vanished. If he'd taken his time, Doran would've spotted that game trail and worked it into his plans. That's why you've really got to keep your cool and not get swept up in the moment. When you get all fired up and excited, that's when you're going to make a mistake or miss a crucial detail and ruin things for yourself. This applies to things like decoys too. I had a decoy set up one time and was calling a bull towards it, intending to take my shot when he stopped to look at the decoy. But I wasn't paying attention to the wind, and it gusted up and flipped my decoy over, spooking the bull. Again, if I'd slowed down and thought about the wind, I probably wouldn't have made that mistake. What's Inside: “Build the room:” establish and master your kill zone. Pay attention to your surroundings. Don't neglect the wind. The importance of staying calm in the moment. Mentioned in this episode: Phoenix Shooting Bags save 20% with code johnstallone Days In The Wild JohnStallone.me Short Description: Longtime elk hunter and fellow bow man Doran Larner is with me today to talk all about mastering your setup. When you take the time to properly “build the room” and establish a good kill zone, you're going to set yourself up for success. The family’s motto of Geology, Origins, and Territory are best exemplified in the passion indeared on all the estate wines. The geology is principal, not only since that was Michael’s background, but it is the sole composition of the building blocks that make the vineyard and varietals excel in the estate. The origins revolves around not just the legacy created by the Larner family, but also reminiscent of the origins of the award wining fruit that has set the vineyard apart as a “Californian Grand Cru”, stated by Robert Parker, Jr., that ultimately leads to world-class wines. Lastly, the territory, which must be perfectly suited to allow the cultivated varietals to express their true characteristics, where year after year the gapes and their wines consistently produce optimal aromas and flavors – eventually entering the vintage bottled time-capsuled.

Winemakers love talking about dirt, especially Michael Larner of Larner Vineyards and Winery, who can break down the minerals and soil types in his vineyard by strata and epoch. While it could be easy to feel intimidated discussing viticulture and geology with someone whose friends like to call “The Professor,” sitting and sipping with Michael Larner is rather entertaining and engaging, so much so that you can feel his warm demeanor. Vincent van Gogh was not as he seems. In 1888, at the age of 35, he was looking for something unique in art for the upcoming exhibition at the 1889 World’s Fair. He found that uniqueness in murder. He created the persona of Jack the Ripper over that summer and then reaped the power that came from murder when he traveled to London over the autumn to kill again and again as Jack the Ripper. But Van Gogh was a murderer long before he became Jack the Ripper. He made his first kill fifteen years earlier at the age of 20 when he was transferred from The Hague, Holland to London in May of 1873, by Goupil’s, the art dealer he worked for. It was believed Vincent first lived in the Battersea area in the S.E. district. He then moved to the nearby Brixton area in August, and on September 5, just five days before his mother’s September 10 birthday, the body parts of an unidentified woman were found floating in the River Thames. Vincent had moved and then had murdered. Nine months later, in the midst of being rejected by his landlady’s 19-year-old daughter, Vincent murdered again, and the lower half of a woman’s body was found in the Thames. Over the years, Van Gogh gave up on being an art dealer to be a preacher like his father, but when he failed at that, he turned to becoming a painter. His younger brother, Theo, then supported him financially for the last ten years of his life. Vincent moved back home to Holland but was thrown out by his father due to his contentious attitude. Then in 1885, after Vincent had returned to again live under his father’s roof, his preacher father was found dead on the threshold of his home one fine Sunday afternoon. Vincent’s sisters and others blamed him indirectly for their father’s sudden death because of the unrelenting arguing and trouble he had caused, but I believe the evidence shows Vincent was more directly responsible for his father’s death, and that, in fact, he laid hands on his preacher father and killed him. He was a serial killer, after all. Vincent then moved in with Theo in Paris in 1886, but there was a problem. Theo had an ex-girlfriend living in his apartment that he wanted out, and during a time when Theo returned to Holland for a visit, the body parts of a woman were found deposited in street urinals in Paris. Vincent had solved Theo’s problem. Vincent also traveled from Paris to London in 1887 for another murder, and a woman’s body parts were again found in the Thames. It was then in 1888 that Vincent moved to the South of France for something new in art and discovered that it was murder that would give him the power he needed for his paintings. He made several trips back to London from August to December and murdered seven women under the guise of his created persona, Jack the Ripper. He also killed another during this same time as himself, using his old method, making the total he killed in the year of the eights to be 8. After cutting off his ear at the end of 1888, Vincent was in and out of the hospital and was then committed to an asylum at his own request, where he then worked on the asylum director to obtain freedom to go out into the country to paint for days at a time. Once he had obtained his freedom, he used it to travel back to London, and he killed three more in 1889. Vincent’s final murder was his own. He shot himself in the stomach soon after he had moved closer to Paris, and he then died on July 29, 1890. His brother, Theo, then lost his mind from grief and guilt and died six months later. In VINCENT ALIAS JACK, the words and actions of Vincent van Gogh are meticulously matched up to those of Jack the Ripper. The evidence is overwhelming, and the conclusion is unavoidable—Vincent van Gogh was Jack the Ripper! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support

There she falls head over heels for an enigmatic local, Moira Burns, and the usually reticent Eve wants more than a holiday romance.
