Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnIf you have a wine lover on your Christmas/holiday gift list, some recommendations.Wine always is appreciated. Gift wine they enjoy, a proclivity you likely know, but if you do not, ask. If you are trying to disguise your gifting intentions, there are many clever ways to inquire. Wine lovers are never hesitant to discuss wine. There are almost infinite options depending on the depth of your friendship and your pocketbook. For casual friends, a single bottle festively wrapped works. For deeper friendships, several bottles or large format bottles play well. You also can go with one or more bottles of high end wines costing three figures. Just do not give with the expectation they will share it with you, although that certainly can happen. Win-win.For very close friends or family, consider a gift membership in a winery's wine club or a non-winery subscription service. That becomes a gift appreciated all year.Practical non-wine gifts:• Waiter's friend hinged corkscrew. Has everything you need to open a bottle of wine, cheap enough to be a stocking stuffer. Worst choice—winged corkscrew. Everything about a winged corkscrew is wrong.• Simple wine decanter. Avoid fancy, showy ones that are easy to break and impossible to clean.• Wine chiller. Essentially an insulating shield to keep wine at the proper temperature. The most popular are made of stainless steel or marble.Wine reading/research material:• Magazine subscriptions. Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast are the leading monthly magazines.• Website subscriptions. Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast are excellent online; unfortunately, they are not bundled with the printed magazine. Wine Folly offers on-line classes, informing videos, and Wine Folly—The Master Guide ($21) is an excellent, easy reference book. RobertParker.com and JamesSuckling.com are filled with searchable wine evaluations and features. wine-searcher.com and vivino.com are search engines for almost every wine made. And there is my Substack blog: gusclemens.substack.com .Books:• Rosé Revolution by Rasmus Emborg and Jens Honoré—massive, beautiful coffee-table tome. $45• Wine and the White House: A History by Frederick J. Ryan, Jr.—massive, beautiful coffee-table tome. $65• Malbec mon amour by Laura Catena and Alejandro Vigil—definitive work; Catena is Argentina's leading spokesperson for (and maker of) malbec. $20• The Mad Crush: An Obscure California Vineyard and the Quest to Make One Great Wine by Sean C. Weir—engaging, expanded version of cult winemaking memoir (paperback). $15Last roundQ: Why is Christmas just like your job?A: You do all the work and the fat guy with the suit who only works one night a year gets all the credit. Wine time. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit gusclemens.substack.com/subscribe
In this Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) Member Interview podcast Hanna Halmari speaks with Dr Laura Catena, managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata and Luca Winery. Laura is a fourth-generation Argentine vintner, physician, and wine writer. She holds a biology degree from Harvard University and a medical doctor degree from Stanford. Laura is also the founder of the Catena Institute of Wine, which is dedicated to preserving Malbec and elevating Argentine wine since 1995. The Catena Institute is a founding member of the SWR, as well as a recent signatory of the SWR's Bottle Weight Accord. Laura shares why Catena joined the accord, highlights their progress in lightweighting bottles, and emphasizes the importance of collaboration in addressing consumer misconceptions about bottle weight and wine quality.
This week, we invited Dr. Laura Catena, Managing Director, Bodega Catena Zapata Argentina, to discuss the hot topic of wine and health, with some thoughts on navigating to the truth and the science behind all the studies discussed by advocates for and against alcohol. Then we head to California to catch up with Shawn Brynildson, Winemaker Black Stallion Estate Winery. Inside the original horse riding area along the Silverado Trail in California's Napa Valley, Black Stallion once housed prize horses; today, it is home to prize-winning vines. Joining us in our Vancouver studio is the legendary Master of Wine and winemaker Olivier Humbrecht of Domaine Zind Humbrecht in Alsace. Olivier talks bio-dynamics and viticulture, and his only outside consulting gig in the world at Phantom Creek Estates. Finally, we head to the north tip of the Village of Naramata to chat with Elizabeth Markulin, Sommelier at Eliza Wine Bar, at the 112-year-old heritage Naramata Inn.
Consider this our call to arms for wine. Where we grapple heroically with the thorny issue of wine and health, calling out misinformation and over-reach, and learn that the truth is always complex, potentially positive - but often mis-represented. This makes us angry and frustrated. And you should feel the same too.You may also feel confused or jaded by this topic. Understandably so. But join us and we will hopefully clear things up AND imbue you with renewed vigour to fight the good fight. Because this is about things we all hold dear - freedom, fairness and our health and personal pleasure. For wine lovers, this is not a time to stay silent. Helping us shed light on this contentious topic are Christopher Snowdon from the Institute of Economic Affairs and Dr Laura Catena, former emergency physician in San Francisco, now head of respected Argentine winery Catena Zapata. Also cited are Tim Stockwell, Sir David Spiegelhalter, Kenneth Mukamal, Eric B Rimm and Edward Slingerland. Along the way we talk dogs, megaphones, the J-shaped curve, bacon sandwiches, zombie arguments and quantifying joy. We even find time to recommend some delicious wines. Thanks for tuning in. We love to hear from you so please do get in touch! Send us a voice message via Speakpipe. Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columnLaura Catena interview Part Five 1-17-2024Dr. Laura Catena, managing director of Bodega Catena Zapata, is considered the face of Argentine wine and a major spokesperson for wine in general. After graduating magna cum laude from Harvard and earning a medical degree from Stanford, she practiced medicine in San Francisco for 25 years while also helping run the family winery, Bodega Catena Zapata. Laura now is in charge of the winery. Here is another excerpt from my interview with Dr. Catena.Dr. Laura Catena, the face of Argentine wine• What is Catena's position on lighter glass bottles? We have reduced our overall bottle weight by 30% over the last 10 years and we are in the process of reducing by 15-25% our remaining bottles. We are working with the local manufacturers to reduce weight. We are lucky in Argentina to have an efficient and well functioning glass-production industry with several manufacturers, which means that 100% of our glass is locally sourced.• What decision gave you the most satisfaction/pride operating Catena? We recently received the #1 World's Best Vineyard in the world award from World's Best Vineyards. I was completely surprised. It is an award given to a winery for a combination of extraordinary wines and original/top level hospitality. I took the scarf (given to me at the award ceremony) and the trophy around the winery and to the vineyards and took photos with all the staff at Catena. I am also going on a tour to visit customers and take the photo with them, because they are part of our success. It made me very happy to be able to celebrate with all the people who work so hard every day and should be recognized for their efforts. It was also very satisfying when we got our first 100 point rating for Adrianna Vineyard River Stones Malbec. It was a milestone in my father's vision to make Argentine wines that could stand with the best of the world. I've written three books about wine and each time I had a lot of doubt about it because of how time consuming it is to write a book (especially when I had my two jobs, wine and medicine, and a young family). But I learned so much while writing each book, and each book became a powerful tool to tell the stories behind Argentine wine, especially the last book Malbec Mon Amour, which was a bestseller in Argentina and got a wonderful review from the New York Times.Last roundWhat do you get if you cross a lion with a watchdog?
