In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Robert Parker, a man widely considered the most powerful critic of any genre in history, about changing careers to pursue a passion. Pulitzer-prize winning media critic David Shaw, in his two-part Front Page profile for the Los Angeles Times, called wine critic Robert Parker “the most powerful critic of any kind, anywhere.” Parker's impact on the wine world has been unrivaled, and many others agree that no critic of any genre, be it theatre, movies, music, art or fashion, has been as influential in their industry as Robert Parker has been in wine. Internationally acclaimed and recognized, Parker is the only wine critic ever awarded France's highest Presidential honor, which he received twice, from France's Presidents Chirac and Mitterrand. Robert was the first critic given Italy's top honor by Italy's President Berlusconi. He was also the first critic given Spain's highest civilian honor by King Juan Carlos. Even though his influence is global, being hounded by paparazzi when he'd visit places like Japan, Robert Parker is an American writer who has had an enormous impact on America's interest in and fascination with wine, and many say he's been a major influence on how wine tastes and is made today. Cathy Corison is a legend, pioneer, and true trailblazer in the California wine industry. In the 1970s, when most women were limited to lab work, Cathy set her sights on winemaking. She earned her place at Freemark Abbey and Yverdon, eventually becoming head winemaker at Chappellet in 1980. While the wine world leaned toward big, bold, hedonistic Napa Cabernets, Cathy stayed true to her vision—crafting restrained, elegant wines that initially flew under the radar of critics like Robert Parker. Today, under her own label, Corison, Cathy is celebrated as one of California's most respected producers. Joining the conversation is Grace Corison, Cathy's daughter and the future face of Corison Winery. Grace played a key role in getting their vineyards certified organic—a recognition of practices they'd followed for years. She recognized the importance of official certification for transparency and for connecting with a younger generation of wine drinkers. Also joining us is Anna Brittain, Executive Director of Napa Green, who organized the annual RISE Symposium, where both Cathy and Grace will serve as keynote speakers this year. RISE is one of the most impactful events in the wine industry, bringing attention to sustainability and climate action through education, leadership, and collaboration. I have never considered these two wines to be similar. However, they have many similarities. Both are full-body, fruit-forward red wines with medium to medium-high acidity and similar alcohol levels. Both have plum and blueberry fruit flavors. Subtle differences do exist between the two. Malbec has vanilla, sweet tobacco, and cocoa flavors. Syrah has milk chocolate, tobacco, and green peppercorn. Syrah can also have gamy notes. Tonight, we are comparing:2018 Zuccardi Q Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. I purchased this from Costco for $14.60. It has a deep purple color with bluish reflections. Intense aromas of red and black fruit, raisins, dried figs and blueberry jam. The aging in French oak brings notes of snuff and chocolate. Soft and silky with sweet and firm tannins. Long finish. Robert Parker 92 Decanter Magazine 92. 2021 K Vine Syrah from Washington. I purchased this wine from Costco for $9.99. Aromas of dark berry fruit, black pepper, and a little smoked meat plus some mint and other assorted spices. The wine tastes rather meaty, smooth mouthfeel and similar flavors to its nose. Be sure to give it plenty of time to breathe.Next week we will report on our 10-year Norton tasting, as well as do a deep dive into the Norton wine grape.

How do you tame a grape like Merlot which actually has higher sugar and alcohol levels than Cabernet Sauvignon? What's the little-known history behind the cult wines of Le Pin in Bordeaux that sell for as much as $10,000 a bottle when first released and then go up from there at auction? Why is it an advantage to have many stakeholders in family-owned estates? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Fiona Morrison, author of the terrific book 10 Great Wine Families: A Tour Through Europe. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of her terrific book, 10 Great Wine Families: A Tour Through Europe. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights How did studying literature at the University of Exeter spark Fiona's interest in the wine industry? How did Fiona meet her husband, Jacques Thienpont of Le Pin? What's the history behind the renowned Le Pin wines? How would Fiona characterize the 2023 and 2024 vintages of Le Pin? What is it like managing the limited production and high prices of Le Pin? How Le Pin tames Merlot grapes into its highly sought-after wines? What were the challenges Fiona faced in writing about the Thienpont family of which she is a part? How does Fiona's book, 10 Great Wine Families, differ from other books on similar topics? Which aspects of Maurice Healy's book, Stay With Me Flagons, inspired Fiona's writing? What are some of the elements that characterize successful multi-generational wine businesses? How did Fiona choose which ten families to profile in her book? Key Takeaways How do you tame a grape like Merlot which actually has higher sugar and alcohol levels than Cabernet Sauvignon? Merlot is a grape that can be very fleshy, Fiona observes. It doesn't like hot weather. It likes to keep its feet wet. If you shade the fruit a bit and let the grapes ripen, this dappled light effect, then you get a lovely balance, and elegant wine. But if you crop strongly and take off the leaves, the wine can get quite vulgar quickly, very sugary, much more jammy. There's much more sugar and alcohol in Merlot than there is in Cabernet, which may surprise some people. So when we tame Merlot, what we do in the cellar is very little pumping over. We use infusions rather than pumping over and soaking the grapes to get the maceration, like when you've got your tea bag in your tea. You have to wet the cap so that it doesn't get dry and tannic. But you're just doing that. You're not punching down or anything like that. What's the little-known history behind the cult wines of Le Pin in Bordeaux that sell for as much as $10,000 a bottle when first released, then go up from there at auction? As Fiona explains, Le Pin means pine tree. The estate was called Chateau du Pin before Jacques bought it in 1979. It's a fairy tale story. He had heard from his uncle, who had their sister estate, Vieux Chateau Certan, that a magical one hectare of land was coming up for sale. And the family thought it was too expensive to buy, so Jacques, who wasn't married at the time, said, well, one hectare, it's a vegetable garden, I think I can manage that myself. He started off very modestly with a barrel borrowed here, a tank borrowed there, and very artisanal winemaking. Then all hell broke loose in a good way with the release of the 1982 vintage which was tasted by top US expert Robert Parker and it became one of Parker's first 100 point wines. And the rest is history. Why is it an advantage to have many stakeholders in family-owned estates? Fiona notes that much of the book is about how you resolve family conflicts in a business and how you prepare the next generation to take over. She says that having lots of shareholders is actually easier than having just one or two heirs, who face a lot of pressure to take over in the business when in fact they may not want to. Whereas, if you've got 120 shareholders, chances are there's at least a few that are actually interested in wine, and will go into it. Lamberto Frescobaldi, who is 30th generation of his family, has instituted a very strict qualifying process for anyone who wants to come into the business. They have to be wine lovers, university-educated and have some business and wine experience. So you can't just be to the manor born. You really do need to have paid your dues before you get into this business. It's not a privileged business. It's probably one of the most complicated businesses, and it's very easy to lose money and it's quite difficult to make money. About Fiona Morrison MW Fiona Morrison is an international Master of Wine, author, writer and wine merchant who lives in Belgium and Bordeaux and holds both British and Belgian nationalities. She became a Master of Wine in 1994 after studying in America and France. Fiona is married to Jacques Thienpont of Le Pin and currently runs the Thienpont family wine merchant business in Belgium and France. The family owns three estates on Bordeaux's right bank: Le Pin (Pomerol), L'IF (St Emilion) and L'Hêtre (Castillon). Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts
This is the weekly columWine scores. Oh, my. On one level, ridiculous. On another level, essential to wine's success over the past half century. Some observations.Anyone who ever took a test or got a report card in grade school immediately understands a wine score. Robert Parker was the most visible person to grasp that, and a parade of imitators reinforced it. Many were based on a 100-point scale, but in practice it is a 80-100 point scale. If your wine score was a 79 or less, you might as well drink it alone, directly out of the bottle, preferably disguised by a brown paper bag so as not to reveal your pathetic wine-buying error. There are other scoring schemes. Jancis Robinson, England's gracious gift to worldwide wine information, uses a scoring system that goes from 12 to 20 points, but she also opts for decimals, so her 20-point scale actually is a 17-point scale. Others use stars, usually 5, and half stars can be awarded.Except, wait. Wine evaluation is not sweating students filling in boxes with No.2 pencils while the clock ticks and gimlet-eyed proctors observe. The exact same wine tastes different given the circumstances of the sipping. How many of you experienced exalting joy sipping wine at a winery redolent with the bonhomie atmosphere of friends and a bucolic tableau spilling forth from the charcuterie board and tasting area, only to later discover you did not experience the same elevated bliss at home, in the kitchen, with last night's dirty dishes stacked in the sink awaiting Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty attention?Professional wine scorers often taste multiple wines at a time. Taste, spit, punch a one or two sentence description into the laptop, assign a score. Rinse. Repeat with another wine. That is not how normal human beings experience wine. For the 17 years of this wine column, I have eschewed scores. I understand their simplicity and value, but I decided to go with my strength as a story teller and entertaining writer for my lane. The world did not need another pince-nezed cognoscente to contribute to effluence of wine tasting evaluations in a grade school paradigm.I hope you agree, and thank you for being part of the adventure.Tasting notes• Cline Family Cellars Hat Strap Chardonnay, Los Carneros, Sonoma County 2021: Rich, full-bodied, admirable restraint on the oak and butter, while still deftly delivering some of that popular style. $25-30 Link to my review• Rodney Strong Vineyards Russian River Valley Reserve Pinot Noir 2021: Smooth, compelling complexity and depth. Are you curious what it would be like to ask for wine advice from legendary Hugh Johnson, author of The World Atlas of Wine, among many other books? What would he advise you on how you can improve your wine-tasting skill and pleasure? Why was Hugh initially against wine scoring and how has his perspective changed over the years? What makes a wine great in Hugh's opinion? Why does Hugh now prefer English sparkling wines over his long-time favourite Pol Roger Champagne? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Hugh Johnson. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Two of you will win a copy of his marvellous memoir, The Life and Wines of Hugh Johnson. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights What is it about Chablis that makes it Hugh's favourite white wine? How have English sparkling wines changed over the years and why does Hugh now turn to them more than his long-time favourite Champagne Pol Roger? Why is it important to taste high-quality wines at the beginning of your wine journey, if you can afford it? How can you improve your wine-tasting skill and pleasure? How did Hugh's first writing job at Vogue magazine lead to his extensive wine writing career? How did The World Atlas of Wine revolutionize the way wine and wineries were understood? What have been the most surprising changes Hugh has seen in the wine world over the years? What was it like for Hugh to buy his first case of First Growth Bordeaux? How does Hugh remember his first encounter with Robert Parker's wine scoring system and his initial skepticism? Key Takeaways What advice does Hugh have on improving your wine-tasting skill and pleasure? The first thing you have to do is concentrate on the wine. Look at the color, sniff it, take a sip, but then when you take a sip, think about it. Keep it in your mouth for a moment or two, chew on it. Swirl it around until it registers, and you experience the wine more fully. Hugh asks how can you score wine any more than you can score Mozart or your friends? He didn't believe in an objective scale or giving the wrong impression that one wine is better than another. Over the years, he's accepted scoring within a narrow range say for wine competition categories where all the wines are from the same region and grape. Hugh says he's had an account with the house of Pol Roger for about 60 years but more recently, he's been switching to English sparkling wine. He observes they have a brilliant wine industry in England. Climate change is part of it, but they're also now using champagne grapes to make the wine. About Hugh Johnson Hugh Johnson is the world's best-known wine writer, having sold more than 20 million books worldwide over a 60-year career. He began acquiring his wine knowledge as a member of the Wine and Food Society at Cambridge University before becoming a feature writer for Vogue and House & Garden magazines. Tim Hanni is a trailblazer in the wine industry, renowned for his groundbreaking work in wine education, sensory sciences, and his mission to demystify wine for all. With the prestigious title of Master of Wine, Hanni holds the distinction of being one of the first Americans to earn this credential, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career. In this episode, Tim shares how perceptions of wine quality are influenced more by psychological and sensory factors than by price, often making expensive wines indistinguishable from cheaper ones in blind tastings. He introduces the concept of "perceptual individualism," explaining how personal differences in taste perception affect wine preferences. Additionally, he highlights the complexities of wine pricing, contrasting the traditional cost-plus approach with the need to consider market perceptions and branding. Why you have to check out today's podcast: Gain insights into wine perception and psychology. Discover the challenges of traditional wine wisdom to understand the wine industry's myths and realities. Learn a comprehensive view on wine pricing contrasting cost-plus pricing with value-based pricing to help you gain insights into the factors that influence wine prices, including production costs, marketing, and consumer perception. "There are people who buy out on price alone. If it's more expensive, it must be better. But there's an inverse relationship between price and quality." - Tim Hanni Topics Covered: 02:01 - Discussing the unique nature of wine pricing and how it affects consumer behavior 04:19 - Talking about the impact of wealthy individuals, particularly those from Silicon Valley, entering the wine industry, which he describes as being over-premiumized 06:22 - Discussing the challenges of market segmentation in the wine industry, comparing it to the evolution of the tech industry 10:22 - Critiquing the wine industry's elitism and rigidity, using examples to illustrate how misleading some widely accepted norms are 12:18 - The background and story of 'Two-Buck Chuck' 13:52 - Addressing the often-debated relationship between wine quality and price 16:30 - Introducing the concept of "perceptual individualism" 20:13 - Elaborating on a wine study conducted by Frédéric Brochet at the University of Bordeaux in 2001 24:32 - How wine pricing is determined, focusing on what he refers to as the "bottom-up approach." 25:48 - Explaining the complexities of wine pricing and how factors beyond production costs influence the final price of a bottle 28:07 - How the complexity of pricing wine remains somewhat elusive Key Takeaways: “The label's not going to make necessarily all that much of a difference in the margin, but the label plus the provenance." - Tim Hanni “Unequivocally, sweet wine drinkers have the most taste buds. They have the highest perceptual acuity of any consumers at all. And often you are paying an extreme premium for that sweet wine.” - Tim Hanni People/Resources Mentioned: Julia Child: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Child Trader Joe's: https://www.traderjoes.com/home Fred Franzia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Franzia Charles F. Tonight, our blind-tasting duo heads down south, way down south to Argentina. Malbec is a Bordeaux grape that has become less popular in France but is king in Argentina. Malbec is the most planted grape by far in Argentina. It produces over half of the worlds Malbec. (According to the Oxford Wine Companion) Malbecs from Argentina are riper and more velvety than those from France. Malbec was a widely planted grape in California before prohibition. Plantings have again been growing in California.Malbec is a medium to full-body wine, normally fruit-forward. It has red and dark fruit flavors. The warmer the climate, the darker the fruit. Many Malbecs have little oak aging. Cahors in Southwestern France produces a lot of Malbec called Cot. It has darker fruit flavors with higher tannins and smoke or earthiness. Malbec often has a purple tint. Tonight, we taste: 1. 2022 Kirkland Signature Malbec $6.99 at Costco. The wine is produced in Mendoza, Argentina. Aged 12 months in French Oak Barrels. The Wine Adventure Journal and Reverse Wine Snob say - Aromas: Plum, blackberry, cola, licorice, vanilla, dusty spice, fig, and leather. Taste – Vanilla, chocolate, plum, black cherry. They call it an easy-to-drink wine with earthy characteristics. Reverse Wine Snob calls it a bulk buy. 2. 2022 Zuccardi Serie A $11.99 at Costco. I saw online for $14.00 to $17.00. This wine comes from the Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina. Robert Parker gave it a 92. The winemaker says, Aroma: cherry and prunes, with black pepper and tobacco. Also get chocolate, cherry liqueur, and spicy notes. Soft and velvety with firm tannins. 3. 2022 Wapisa Malbec $14.99 from Costco. The wine comes from Patagonia, Argentina. James Suckling gave it a 94. Flavors of dark plums and blackberries, chocolate, ripe tannins, and good acidity. Next week we are having our first challenge show. It is a Pinot Noir Challenge and features a California Pinot verse a Oregon Pinot. The wines will include:1. 2019 Talbott, Kali Hart Pinot Noir. Purchased from Costco for $17.49. 2. 2021 Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir. Purchased from Costco for $17.00.

Amy Harmon grew up in a remote Utah valley, very close to where the famed outlaw Butch Cassidy really lived. Quite a few years before her, of course. The folklore surrounding his Robin Hood reputation has always fascinated her. She's far too young to have seen the famous movie starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford first time round, but she's excavated the history and shed a whole new light on the story and her latest book, The Outlaw Noble Salt. Hi, I'm your host, Jenny Wheeler, and in this week's Binge Reading episode, Amy talks about the mystery surrounding Robert LeRoy Parker, better known as Butch Cassidy, the American outlaw, train robber and leader of a gang called The Wild Bunch. It's officially recorded that he died in a shootout with local authorities in Bolivia in 1908. But did he really? Amy's book is a fascinating and heart-touching re-imagining of the story. Hello there, Amy, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Amy Harmon: I am so excited to talk to you, Jenny. Jenny Wheeler: You've written more than 20 books and the most recent one is The Outlaw Noble Salt, and it retells the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance story, The Wild Bunch Story. If we are of a certain age, we saw the movie years ago, so it's well known. What did you feel you could bring new to it? Amy Harmon: I have always been drawn to the story, and I think it's because I grew up in a valley, just north of the valley where Butch Cassidy, who wasn't known as Butch Cassidy in his early years, he was Robert Parker, lived. He was born very close to where I was born, a hundred years apart. We were born in small town Utah at the end of the Wild West era. He was the last of this very short time period that defined in the West. And I have always been interested in him. I've always felt a connection to him. Beyond just of course, the movie which came out in 1969, which predates me a little bit. I didn't grow up with the movie, but it was very much the Western lore that is part of this place...
This episode with Vine Street Imports founder and CEO Ronnie Sanders delves into the evolution of Australian wine over the last 25 years. It explores the shift from the '90s highly manipulated, high alcohol content wines appreciated by critics like Robert Parker, to a modern appreciation for natural, lower alcohol content wines. Ronnie contrasts the older, bigger, and bolder styles with the fresher, more minimalist approach influenced by the natural wine movement. 569. We welcome Jeroen Dewulf back to the podcast to discuss his new book, Afro-Atlantic Catholics: America's First Black Christians. "This volume examines the influence of African Catholics on the historical development of Black Christianity in America during the seventeenth century. Dewulf's analysis focuses on the historical documentation of Afro-Atlantic Catholic rituals, devotions, and social structures. Of particular importance are brotherhood practices, which were critical in the dissemination of Afro-Atlantic Catholic culture among Black communities, a culture that was pre-Tridentine in nature and wary of external influences. These fraternal Black mutual-aid and burial society structures were critically important to the development and resilience of Black Christianity in America through periods of changing social conditions." "Jeroen Dewulf (born 1972 in Nieuwpoort, Belgium) is a Belgian scholar specializing in Dutch culture, the Dutch language, German Studies, slavery and African-American culture, Caribbean Studies, and Latin American Studies. He is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley." This week in Louisiana history. April 13, 1803. Barbé-Marbois meets with Livingston to offer La. for 100 Million ₣ francs.
