Danielle Casey, President & CEO of the Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance, joins Dennis and discusses finding your path in economic development. How do you find the right fit? How do you know when to move to the next position? Is working your way up in one organization preferable, or is there value in working for multiple organizations? Is there a tipping point when it makes more sense to stay with an organization? Are there red flags when looking at joining an organization? Are there some dos and don'ts people should be aware of when interviewing? Ms. Casey brings extensive and diverse experience in leadership, public administration, marketing, business development and retention, and strategic planning as the leader of AREA, a nonprofit organization working to create a prosperous and diverse economy for the four-county Albuquerque metro region. She joined the organization in October of 2020. Previously, she served as the Executive Vice President for the Greater Sacramento Economic Council and oversaw the organization's business development, marketing and communications, investor engagement, research, and strategic initiatives critical to advancing economic growth in Greater Sacramento. She oversaw the comprehensive launch and execution of a best-in-class national site selection consultant strategy and established first-ever memorandums of understanding with seven local commercial real estate brokerage offices, receiving a Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council in 2020 for a joint publication she spearheaded with CBRE. She established critical internal efficiencies with revisions to all organizational practices from database management to budget development and oversight. Even in the wake of COVID-19, the organization succeeded in meeting all its annual metrics and job creation goals and launching a regional business retention and expansion outreach program. From 2013 – 2018, Danielle served the well-known City of Scottsdale, Arizona as its Economic Development Director. Under her leadership, the department received six awards of excellence from the International Economic Development Council, status as an Accredited Economic Development Organization, the 2015 ‘Large Community Economic Development Organization of the Year' award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development, and unanimous Council approval of a Five-Year Economic Development Strategic Plan – the first for the community in more than 15 years. During her tenure, the department was directly involved in projects accounting for more than $24 million in 5-year direct revenue impact to the city, $7 billion in 5-year total economic impact, 4,428 or more new jobs in the first 12 months of business operation alone and $160 million in new capital investment. Ms. Casey served in various executive roles at the City of Maricopa, Ariz. since 2005, lastly as the Assistant City Manager. Departments under her oversight included economic development, community and development services, capital improvement, public works and City-wide marketing and communications activities. She managed several noteworthy tasks in the establishment of the City's economic development office, such as the creation of an Industrial Development Authority, the City's first Redevelopment District and Area Plan, the establishment of a local economic development 501 (c) 3 (the Maricopa Economic Development Alliance), City-wide branding and Economic Development Strategic Plan. Prior to her time in Maricopa, she attained significant experience in the non-profit sector working in fundraising, marketing, and event and membership management at the Heard Museum of Native Cultures and Art in Phoenix, Arizona and at Save The Bay in Providence, Rhode Island. Ms. Casey received her bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and Master of Administration from Northern Arizona University. She is both a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) as well as a certified Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP). She is a member of the International Economic Development Council and serves on its Board of Directors Governance Committee. She also serves as an instructor at the Oklahoma University Economic Development Institute and serves on its Board of Directors and as a Mentor. Danielle is a proud Past President of the Arizona Association for Economic Development, a statewide professional association with more than 480 public and private members, and an active board member with New Mexico IDEA. In May 2010, Ms. Casey was the honored recipient of the ‘Economic Developer of the Year – Small Community' award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development and in January 2017 she was recognized as a national top ‘40 under 40 Rising Star' in economic development by Development Counsellors International. In addition, she is co-founder of the Arizona Chapter of Women Leading Government which in its sixth year draws more than 400 participants. An Air Force brat, Ms. Casey has had the great privilege of living in Texas, Ohio, Alabama, Louisiana, Utah, Rhode Island, Arizona and California throughout her life and is thrilled to now call Albuquerque home, along with her trusty English bulldog Sophie, heeler/cattle dog mix Persie, and her amazing and supportive husband Steve.

Dan Stellar - Bolstering Biodiversity in Arizona and Beyond

Dan Stellar is the State Director for the Arizona Chapter of The Nature Conservancy, where he leads the organization's efforts across a wide range of cutting-edge initiatives, including forest health, water conservation, resilient cities, healthy grasslands, and more. Arizona is one of the nation's largest and most biodiverse states, which creates a host of extremely unique conservation challenges and opportunities– both in its arid, wide-open landscapes and densely populated urban centers. As you'll hear, Dan and his team are implementing conservation solutions that not only benefit people and nature specifically in Arizona, but they are also creating actionable conservation frameworks that can be applied all over the American West. - Dan was born and raised on the East Coast, and he has spent his career in the non-profit sector, applying his talents to important issues both domestically and abroad.  He began his tenure at TNC Arizona in 2016, when he assumed the role of Deputy State Director. He quickly fell in love with Arizona and TNC's critical work in the state, and, in 2020, he assumed the role of State Director. Dan is also a committed endurance athlete, and he's run a mind-blowing number of marathons and half-marathons. And on top of all of that, he's a dedicated father, husband, and family man. - Dan and I share so many common interests in conservation, endurance sports, and family, so I was super excited to have the opportunity to learn more about the specifics of his work and his fascinating personal and professional journey. We started the conversation with an overview of what makes Arizona such a unique place from a conservation perspective, then we dug into the details of TNC's work in forest heath, rivers, aquifers, outdoor recreation, and resilient cities. We talked about some of the lessons he learned from traveling and working internationally, why he chooses to push himself so hard athletically, and how he goes about building such strong relationships with stakeholders, partner organizations, and his TNC team members. Dan is also a voracious reader, so we obviously chatted about books, and he wrapped up the conversation with very wise parting words. - I really felt like I'd met a real kindred spirit in Dan, and I greatly appreciate everything that he and his team are doing to make Arizona– and the West– a better place. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. --- Dan Stellar TNC Arizona's 2023 Annual Report Spring 2024 Field Notes Magazine Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/dan-stellar/ --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy and TNC chapters throughout the Western United States. Navigating the pitfalls and challenges in the femtech industry can be daunting. From raising capital (in an environment where less than 4% of research and development funding goes to women's health) to ensuring clinical accuracy of femtech products (with studies showing that 85% of femtech apps don't meet ORCHA's clinical quality threshold) to negotiating contracts with payers and employers, operating in the femtech industry takes resilience and passion.  In this episode of FemInnovation, host Bethany Corbin sits down with Dr. Mitzi Krockover to discuss the evolving landscape of women's health as it relates to funding, clinical accuracy, and business adoption. Mitzi is a fierce women's health advocate and the Founding Medical Director of the Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center. Mitzi also served as the Vice President of Women's Health at Humana and is the current Managing Director of the Arizona Chapter of Golden Seeds, an angel investing network. Mitzi is the host of the Beyond the Paper Gown Podcast and serves on Springboard's Women's Health Executive Committee. Bethany and Mitzi discuss the barriers to clinical adoption of femtech products, how payers and employers evaluate femtech devices, the importance of advisory boards, the role of angel investors, and much more. There are not many group models that are supportive of a wide range of people concerning their languages, environments, and backgrounds. My two guests today have formed a powerful support system that needs to be replicated everywhere in the world. Join us to learn more! Annette Cycon has been a social worker for over 30 years, specializing in group work. With Liz Friedman, she co-founded the nonprofit MotherWoman in Massachusetts, and she went on to lead that organization for 15 years. Their mission was to increase awareness and access to mental health resources for perinatal women at risk for or experiencing perinatal emotional complications. This included designing and training peers and professionals in their unique trauma-informed support group model for moms. In 2017, they founded GPS Group Peer Support to broaden the scope of their work to include those struggling with addiction and recovery, newly-arrived refugees, first-generation college students, frontline workers suffering trauma as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and others, in addition to perinatal parents and caregivers. GPS is now being implemented in communities internationally and in seven languages.  Nallely (Nelly) Willis, CLC, BBA, PMHC, has spent ten years providing nationwide peer support in English and Spanish to families experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She is uniquely attuned to the challenges that expecting and new families face, and she supports them through lactation, childbirth, doula, and postpartum consultation, education, and support. Nallely ran a nonprofit organization, Heartsounds Inc., serving perinatal, low-income Latina, and BIPOC mothers across southern AZ. She has been with GPS Group Peer Support for six years, rising to the position of Program Director, as well as being a GPS Certified Coach, Support Group Facilitator, and Master Trainer in English and Spanish. Nallely has been a volunteer for nine years with the Arizona Chapter of Postpartum Support International in Outreach and Education and on the Bilingual Warmline. She is currently a counselor with the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline.  Show Highlights: The background of GPS: How it began and what the program is all about The benefits of group peer support programs How GPS trains people to run peer support groups with a consistent structure and sequence based on learning how to listen Why a group program needs to have consistency and “sameness” How group programs invite people to say the hard things in a safe space How GPS is filling in the gaps with high-quality mental health care for communities of color Why the training for therapists through GPS is much-needed and unique Highlights of the 100% Spanish GPS program for the Latino population  Highlights of the upcoming training, conferences, and website resources available through GPS  Resources: Connect with Group Peer Support: Website and Facebook Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support!  Visit www.postpartum.net/professionals/certificate-trainings/ for information on the grief course.   Visit my website, www.wellmindperinatal.com, for more information, resources, and courses you can take today! Our guest today is Scott Prior. Scott Prior is a competitive shooter with a YouTube channel called Scooter's Brass, and the current president of the Arizona Chapter of the Liberal Gun Club. Scott believes that the Constitution is not a partisan document and that every American deserves equal protections under the law. He also believes that the ‘gun control' crowd needs to start focusing on the causes of violence, instead of trying to manipulate and create gun laws that will be ineffective against gun violence. 1) How do we bridge the gap between left and right 2A supporters? 2) In pop culture (films, music videos, TV Shows) guns are often grievously mishandled, setting a terrible example for inexperienced and untrained people to follow. You have mentioned that there are ways to broadcast positive gun events on TV and social media platforms. Talk so us about that. 3) Violence has been with us since the dawn of Man. If there is a true solution to violence, it isn't to make one person less able to protect him or herself. But, what can we do to examine the root causes – the why of gun violence, not the tool of gun violence?
