For Ayodele Casel tap dancing is magic. As a young high school student, she dreamed of one day dancing like Ginger Rogers as she recreated Ginger's moves in her bedroom But it wasn't until Ayodele Casel was a sophomore at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts that she took her first tap dancing class. That was her entry point into the art form which would eventually lead to a more than 20 year career as a professional tap dancer. As a Black and Puerto Rican woman, Ayodele Casel didn't see herself reflected in the mainstream image of tap dancers because the form has been largely whitewashed through systematic racism. For that reason, she works tirelessly to remind her audiences that tap is deeply rooted in Black art and culture. In this episode of “How I Made It” Ayodele takes us through her tap journey, and reclaims tap dancing as a Black art form.Follow us on TikTok and YouTube. Subscribe to our newsletter by going to the top of our homepage. This episode originally aired in 2021.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE with Host & America's #1 Take Action Success Coach & Strategist Lori Anne Casdia chats with Connor Kelly discussing his tap Philly Tap Festival.  Tap dancing originated in the United States in the early 19th century, born from a fusion of African rhythmic traditionsand European step dances like Irish jigs and English clog dancing. Enslaved Africans brought their complex rhythms, often expressed through body percussion, which merged with the footwork of European immigrants.Today, tap dancing continues to evolve, blending with contemporary dance and music styles while staying rooted in its rhythmic and cultural heritage. It's celebrated worldwide for its unique ability to combine rhythm, movement, and storytelling.Tap's history reflects its roots in resilience and creativity, making it not just an art form but a powerful expression of cultural fusion and identity.Conner Kelly is from New Jersey and started Tap Dancing at seven years old with his aunt as his tap teacher. One of The New York Times 'Biggest Breakout Stars of 2019', Ayodele Casel, a tap dancer and choreographer, is our special guest for this conversation with Lee. Born in The Bronx and raised in Puerto Rico, Ayodele began her professional training at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Her origins in theater and love for storytelling and tap dance have significantly contributed to the narrative nature in her work, which is rooted in the expression of identity, culture, language, and communication. She is a 2019-2020 fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, where she is the only tap dancer. In this episode, Lee and Ayodele cover a wide range of topics that include: her passion of elevating others, creative expression, systemic racism, and the 'artist's hustle.' They discuss her 2020 take-aways, how that has led to her wanting to amplify her work, and the impact she wants to make in her art form. Ayodele shares more about her fellowship at Harvard and Operation Tap, an online forum and educational resource for dancers, students, teachers, and choreographers she created with two other founders. As a brilliant creator, she believes, "There is no shortage of ideas if you make yourself available." Last night, a buddy and I went to the “Tappy Holidays” show at Symphony Space. We were both a little leery about it because neither one of us is particularly into Christmas music, and this was going to be a tap dance show featuring nothing but Christmas music.
