Today, the Spotlight shines On Christian McBride, a musician, recording artist, prolific composer, arranger, producer, cultural curator, dedicated educator, and mentor.Christian has been called the hardest-working person in jazz, and based on what I just rattled off, that might be underselling it. From his early days in Philadelphia soaking up the sounds of Philly Soul to sharing stages with legends like Ray Brown and Chick Corea, Christian has become a bridge between jazz's rich history and its vibrant future. These days, you'll find him leading his new band, Ursa Major, hosting NPR's Jazz Night in America, mentoring the next generation of musicians, and somehow finding time to work on a new big band album featuring twelve different vocalists. He's also preparing for an upcoming funk tribute show with none other than George Clinton and Savion Glover at NJPAC.Whether laying down the groove with Inside Straight, his Big Band, or any other celebrated ensemble, Christian brings an irresistible combination of soul, swing, and storytelling to everything he touches. Today, we'll explore his journey from Philly to the world stage, his passion for record collecting, and why he believes being uncomfortable might be the best way to grow as a musician.Quick note: this conversation occurred when our baseball teams were still in contention. This rarely seen gem has now reached cult status, even being named to several "Top 10" lists for the first ten years of the millennium. How much performance is TOO much performance? How many DV cameras are TOO much? How much offensive imagery is TOO much? Guest: Kristen Brooks SandlerDirector, Choreographer, CreatrixFounder & Artistic Director of Thistle DanceToday marks our first interview episode with an incredible guest who challenges what sustainable, collaborative, inclusive, consent-based work can look like. Not only does she share how she holds space for both the person and the artist but the collaborative framework she believes (and we do too) has the power to make a bigger impact on our industry at large if we all chose to meet each other with more transparent authenticity.Kristen (she / her) is an award winning director and choreographer whose work can be seen on screen and stage. Purple haired & proudly queer, she is committed to physical storytelling, believing in movement as the language that bridges the gap between audience and artistry. On stage, she has directed & choreographed musicals, immersive work and original dance creations at regional & international theaters. Her screen credits include work on set with Nickelodeon and Hallmark, & her films have been featured in festivals in over 30 countries. Her first original creation, won Best Dance and Physical Theater at the Capital Fringe Festival, and she has since been nominated for many awards, including a New York Innovative Theater Award for Best Choreography. Her company, Thistle Dance, uses movement as the primary language to conjure wonderfully strange creations challenging our codified perception of history and lore. The company is currently in their second year of creating the immersive experience “UNBOUND” in partnership with the New York Public Library, opening in October. Before leading her own rehearsal rooms, Kristen worked as a performer alongside such creators as Andy Blankenbuehler, Savion Glover, Karma Camp & Connor Gallagher. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with David Fantle & Tom Johnson, Authors, “C'mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock” About Harvey's guest: Today's guests, David Fantle & Tom Johnson, are co-authors who last appeared on our show to discuss their landmark book entitled, “Hollywood Heyday: 75 Candid Interviews with Golden Age Legends”. The interviews contained in that book were conducted when our guests were mere teenagers living in Minnesota, visiting Hollywood in the hopes of meeting movie stars. And boy, did they ever! Since then, our guests have gone on to have distinguished careers. David Fantle has been interviewing, writing, and speaking about Hollywood's Golden Age stars for 45 years, and he's an adjunct professor of film at Marquette University. Tom Johnson is a former senior editor at Netflix, and he's written movie reviews and features for many publications including E! Online, Movie-phone, and People magazine. His writing has been recognized with a Minnesota Newspaper Association achievement award and a National Hearst Foundation award. They're here today to discuss their brand new book entitled, “C'mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock”. This well-researched and illuminating book chronicles how Judy Garland's last MGM movie, and her 3rd and final film with co-star Gene Kelly, was conceived, cast and filmed, despite the troubled atmosphere of drama and heartache, and the sometimes overwhelming obstacles and challenges surrounding the production. The book is jam-packed with little-known and newly uncovered details about the people in front of and behind the cameras, and it examines the enduring legacy of the movie, including some fascinating insights provided by Judy Garland's daughter Lorna Luft, Gene Kelly's daughter Kerry Kelly Novick, and other celebrities including Savion Glover, Ben Vereen, Tommy Tune and Michael Finestine. For Omar Edwards, tapping is not a form of dance. It's a way of communicating and expressing himself that transcends that narrow definition of the performance art. Edwards, whose cousin is tap legend Savion Glover, is currently playing the Tap Griot, an omniscient narrator who reflects the inner turmoil of four Tuskegee Airmen through tap in the stage drama “Fly.” On this episode, the Times Union's Steve Barnes talks to Edwards about the show, his craft, and life lessons he has absorbed from tapping. Also on this episode, Leigh Hornbeck and Jessica Marshall discuss the doping scandal that's rocked the sport of figure skating at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Plus, Shayla Colon talks about a special Jewish head covering made in the Capital Region that appeared in an episode of the “Sex and the City” sequel series, “And Just Like That.”

In this episode of our PILOT ERROR series we look at the TV pilot for Shangri-La Plaza (1990). A musical-comedy unsold pilot made by CBS in 1990. Macho Ira and sensitive George are two polar-opposite brothers who own an auto-repair shop in Southern California. Both men quickly fall for Amy, a beautiful widow who has inherited the local donut shop previously owned by her no-good estranged husband. Amy plans to sell the place and move with her daughter Jenny to Paris, only to find that her ex-husband had "hocked the place up down to the powdered sugar", forcing her to put off her dreams and run the place herself. Geneva was the sassy waitress at the coffee shop, and Chili the rapper-narrator-dancer on crutches. Andrew Nemr has been tapping practically since he was out of diapers. He's studied and performed with some of the best, including Gregory Hines and Savion Glover. He's also a tap historian and co-founder of the Tap Legacy Foundation. Andrew told me about his life in tap and the tradition he's a part of as he retraced his own steps and those of his predecessors, occasionally letting his feet do the talking.
