Bach Akademie Charlotte’s 2024 Bach Festival returns to various locations around Charlotte and this year’s festival is called “Bach Akademie Charlotte Goes to Italy.” While it is indeed a Bach festival, it’s bookended by opening and closing concerts that focus on music from Italy, namely Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 . We talk to Bach Akademie Charlotte leadership about those concerts as well as many of the other events, both concerts and educational sessions, that make up this year’s festival. Last year’s departure of the Oregon Bach Festival’s artistic director Matthew Halls left fractures in the classical music community in Eugene and big questions about how the festival should move forward. Just days before this year’s three-week-long festival, the University of Oregon’s dean of the music and dance department, which runs OBF, announced the departure of the festival’s controversial executive director, Janelle McCoy. As Eugene Weekly’s arts editor Bob Keefer tells us, this year’s programs are markedly different from past years, and many are hoping the once-world-renowned festival can regain its former glory.

Brilliant citizen artist Darrell Grant, a recipient of an Oregon Creative Heights grant, is known for his multifaceted and deep artistic projects. Christopher Kono - geschmackssichere Selektion, butterweiche Transitions und ein übermenschliches Gefühl für den richtigen Augenblick… 'nuff said? 1992 erblickte der waschechte Ostberliner im Stadtteil Hohenschönhausen das Licht der Welt. Fußball, Fahrrad & Doktorspiele im Sandkasten waren das Zentrum seines jugendlichen Kosmos bis er im zarten Alter von 7 Jahren mit Brooklyn Bounce seine Unschuld unwiederbringbar an die elektronische Musik verlor. Es vergingen die Jahre einer "normalen" Jugend: Zocken, BMX, Mountainbike und daraus folgend Hip-Hop und Rockmusik-Sozialisation. Niemand konnte zu diesem Zeitpunkt ahnen, dass ein gebrochenes Bein und die damit einhergehende Langeweile Chris dazu verleiten würden vollends in die Welt der elektronischen Musikkultur einzutauchen. Chris tauschte das Bike gegen Traktor und bald darauf Traktor gegen Turntables. Zwei Jahre beschallte er diverse Homepartys im Freundeskreis bis durch einen spontanen Gig auf dem Seelektrik-Festival die Jungs vom legendären Triebwerk-Magdeburg auf ihn aufmerksam wurden. Es folgten Bookings in Clubs wie Weekend, Tresor, MIKZ, VCF, Triebwerk MD, Magdalena, Süss war Gestern, Krach am Bach Festival, Diamantbrauererei MD uvm. wo er zusammen mit Headlinern wie Len Faki, Vril, Kollektiv Ost, Guido Schneider, Tanith, Andreas Henneberg, SoKool u.a. die Stage teilte. 2013 veröffentlichte Christopher Kono seine Debüt EP "Im @ Fucker Say What!" auf dem Label Berlin Aufnahmen sowie Single-releases auf Fruit Records, Vinylisme Records und BR Selections. Welcome to Secrets of Organ Playing Podcast #71! http://www.organduo.lt/podcast ​Today's guest is world-renown French concert organist, pianist, improviser and composer Thierry Mechler. ​He was born in 1962. He started piano and organ lessons in his home town of Mulhouse and then went on to Strasbourg where he studied piano with Helene Boschi and organ with Daniel Roth at the “Conservatoire National de Région”. In 1981, he won first prize with highest congratulations at the “Concours International de Paris”. In 1984, he went to Paris to study with Marie-Claire Alain, where he won, in succession a gold medal and a first prize of excellence with congratulations from the jury. In 1986, he won a laureate in improvisation and a first prize for virtuosity with congratulations from the jury in the concert class from Marie-Claire Alain in Paris. He also studied the Art of improvisation with Jacques Taddei, and won the medal of honour at the contest for composition in Mulhouse. In 1991 he was accepted in the S.A.C.E.M. as composer, also in 1991, he received the “Europäischen Förderpreis” in Dresden, as an award for his international carrier and many recordings. From 1986 until 1989 he was organ master at the Conservatoire National of Annecy. He is invited each year to numerous European Organ Festivals. As a renowned teacher and juror, he is invited every year to Germany, England, Finland, Island, USA, Korea and France to give masterclasses in various academies. He has made many recordings of which the reference can be found in the international catalogue. Titular organist from the great organ of the Cathedral Primatial Saint-Jean in Lyon from 1991 until 1999, curator and organist of the organ of the Auditorium Maurice Ravel in Lyon, an instrument previously the Cavaillé-Coll of the Trocadéro. ​ During 1995, Thierry Mechler was performing the entire works of J. S. Bach in a famous series of twelve recitals. In 1998, he played all the Six Vierne Symphonies. Member of the Jury of international Competitions, in 1998 Thierry Mechler became Professor for Organ and Improvisation at the University (Musikhochschule) in Köln. Since 2002, Thierry Mechler is an organist and a curator of the prestigious Philharmonie of Cologne (Germany). ​Thierry Mechler's career has taken him worldwide - both as organist and pianist. He has built a reputation as an exciting performer and improviser. Celebrated also as a composer, his " 6 Métamorphoses on B.A.C.H " Opus 14 were created at the Philharmonie of Cologne in January 2009. In 2012, he played all 48 Preludes and Fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier of J.S. Bach at the Bach- Festival in Schauenberg. In 2016 he participated on the 30th anniversary of the Philharmonie in Cologne, with the world premiere concert of "I-FORMATION" for two orchestras and organ solo from Vito ZURAJ, with the Gürzenich orchestra, conducting by Francois- Xavier Roth and the Symphonic WDR orchestra conducting by Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Thierry Mechler is Knight in the French National Order of "Arts and Letters". Young students perform a free concert in Winter Park - the culmination of a week of musical learning, which even included a Yoga for Singers class led by UCF's Dr Jeremy Hunt. 

Operatic soprano Monica Yunus has been an Artist-in-Residence this week, courtesy of the Bach Festival and the Marilyn Horne Foundation. She performed in schools around Central Florida and will give a recital tonight at 7pm at Rollins College.
