Jeffrey Biegel is a pianist who has dazzled audiences across the globe, performing with major orchestras from a young age. But his contributions go far beyond the concert stage — He's commissioned over 25 new works from living composers, leaving a lasting mark on contemporary piano music. Always pushing the boundaries, Jeffrey has performed weekly online concerts during the Covid pandemic and even pioneered the first-ever live audio/visual recital on the internet in 1997, broadcasting from Steinway Hall in New York. We explore Jeffrey's extraordinary journey—from his early challenges with being unable to hear to his studies at Juilliard, and his deep passion for bringing new music into the world. Along the way, we discuss his creative process, his experiences as a performer and teacher, and even a futuristic story he's written, which you can find on his website.Part 1 dives into Jeffrey's early life, starting with the incredible story of overcoming hearing issues before discovering his musical gift. By age 10, he was already performing concerti! We talk about his time at Juilliard and the lessons he learned from that transformative period. Since Jeffrey has brought so many new works into the piano repertoire, I ask him to walk me through the fascinating process of commissioning new music. We wrap up with a fun, hypothetical set of questions based on one of his creative stories.Part 2 [Subscriber Content] turns to another key part of Jeffrey's career — teaching. We also dig into a question that musicians often grapple with: how much freedom should a performer take when interpreting a composer's work? Finally, we end on a high note, discussing two unique pieces Jeffrey has been closely involved with: Leroy Anderson's Concerto in C and Peter Schickele's Concerto for Very Grand Piano (you might know him as Mr. PDQ Bach).Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? In This Episode:Way back in November, the guys had an incredible conversation with the Biegels and they knew then that they weren't done with Alex and Bruce (see Episode #124). Fast forward to March and they are finally able to reconnect and they didn't skip a beat. They pick up right where they left off and the result is a fitting and unforgettable Part 2. The guys use the time to get caught up, revisit pieces of their remarkable story, and explore how they are dealing with the challenges that today presents. Through all of it, their witness of truth lights the guys up and everyone walks away grateful and edified. Ever have a righteous desire that just isn't happening in your life? Ever allow self-talk to get in your head? Ever discredit your experience or your own hard-earned wisdom? If you have, you will relate to this conversation. The Biegels teach us all what they have learned and are learning to get through things and the guys are taking notes. For this episode, it's simple. Tune in and be changed. After all, what do you have to lose?Show NotesWho Said It...“You cannot stay on the summit forever; you have to come down again. So why bother in the first place? Just this: What is above knows what is below, but what is below does not know what is above. One climbs, one sees. One descends, one sees no longer, but one has seen. There is an art of conducting oneself in the lower regions by the memory of what one saw higher up. In This Episode:Tyler and Mike introduce RMIT listeners to Bruce and Alex Biegel. The Biegels are an amazing couple that has a lot to teach anyone that will pull up a chair and listen to their story. Their individual faith journeys could not be more opposite from each other, but that's only half the story. The real adventure begins when they find each other and start building a life together. It's a love story unlike any that the guys have heard before. It's a living testament to the power of faith to overcome, to renew, to restore, to forgive, to endure, to surrender, and to never give up. This time spent with Bruce and Alex is a perfect reminder that everyone's journey is different, everyone's challenges and problems are custom, and with God, we can work it all out. These are some deep waters and Tyler and Mike are definitely not done with the Biegels. Neither is God. “I think that we're both better humans and better at life because of it,” Lauren Abney says of the Well/Behaved podcast that she co-founded with best friend Stephanie Biegel. And this is not an overstatement. As self-described connectors, they talk with a variety of experts from the wellness space about everything from astrology to tequila. In turn, those connections have since taken them on as brand advisors and consultants, creating a cycle of service and connection that benefits all involved as it continues to grow. In this way, they get to be a part of a world they would have otherwise been on the outside of. They get to build authority and be part of businesses they are interested in without the risk that comes with founding and running them. What's more, filling their cups through this passion project has made them both better at their full-time jobs. There is room for everyone in the ever-evolving podcast space. The best way to start is with a topic you are just as interested in talking about as you would want an audience to hear. Nothing has to be perfect, people want authenticity. Ask for help from friends who have started podcasts for advice (or at least tell them your plan so they can hold you accountable) or look for educational resources from Upsprout, Anchor, Almost 30, YouTube and Spotify. There is always a reason not to do something, but don't be afraid to jump in. The first step is the most difficult and also the most important. Go for it. Quotes • “The word ‘passion project' really is the right word. It's not a side hustle. (8:27-8:32 | Lauren) • “A lot of people talk about starting a podcast and they say it's easy. It's a lot of work, but it's such a special business in that it's always evolving and there's a ton of potential.” (6:24-6:37 | Stephanie) • “There's now this narrative that everybody has a podcast. Every business has a podcast, every celebrity has a podcast, but they all have their tequila, too. At the end of the day, I think there's space for everyone.” (7:42-7:53 | Lauren) • “It's not about a podcast having the most amount of social followers. People are leaning into the content.” (37:47-37:55 | Stephanie) Connect with Lauren Abney and Stephanie Biegel: Instagram | http://www.instagram.com/wellbehavedpodcast Listen to Well/Behaved here:| https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/well-behaved-podcast/id1481676172 Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Dear FoundHer on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! The NFL linebacker had a breakout season with the Miami Dolphins in 2019, then tore his Achilles before 2020 before injuring his calf in the 2021 training camp. Now he's with the Baltimore Ravens with a clean bill of health, and he's ready to get back to work. On today's episode, I sat down with Lauren Abney and Stephanie Biegel, hosts of Well Behaved Podcast. Lauren, Stephanie, and I discuss the differences between dating in your 20s and 30s, why it's important to date someone who doesn't “check off your boxes,” questioning if motherhood is right for you, how the right person may affect if you want kids or not, why Lauren's marriage ended, why a colonic is never going to work in my favor, talking about going to the bathroom with a partner, and more. This episode starts with a solo where I discuss giving yourself closure, the feeling of knowing someone is the one, body image issues, and when someone you're dating pulls back.
