TITLE:Meet a Pragmatic Creative (ft. Daniel Roth | Senior Creative Director | Host & Founder, Event Explorer Podcast) GUEST BIO:A seasoned Senior Creative Director with expertise in experiential marketing and event design, Daniel Roth has led high-impact projects for global brands like GM, Nike, and Audi, blending strategic storytelling with immersive experiences. Daniel's innovative approach to live experiences ensures seamless execution and measurable impact in every event he creates. He's also the Host & Founder of the Event Explorer podcast (eventexp.org) OPENING QUOTE:“Things are going to change throughout a year because we're working with decision makers and they need to make a decision about something. So you have to be flexible. I think the pragmatism kind of works in that way too, that if you're kind of asked to change horses midstream, you still know how to ride a horse. So let's go saddle up and head off in a new direction is fine.” SUMMARY:In this episode of "No More Bad Events" with Scott Bloom, Daniel Roth shares insights on how his background in festivals and theater informs his approach to events. He identifies himself as a "pragmatic creative," focusing on realistic ideas he can execute. Roth emphasizes the importance of balancing practicality with creativity, understanding client needs, and being flexible with changes. He discusses how branding and culture play crucial roles in live events, and how technology, when used thoughtfully, can enhance the experience. Roth also talks about his podcast "Event Explorer," which delves into the cultural impact of community events and festivals. The episode highlights his passion for using creativity to foster better connections and cultures in the event space. AUDIOGRAM  [10:38 - 11:05]:“You've probably heard it before as well, that, that I learned probably first semester of theater school is take the note, don't argue the note. The director is right, the director has the vision. And that's the same thing from clients. Don't argue the note. They're smart. They're in the position that they hired you. So if you trust that they're smart because they made the decision to hire you, then they're smart because they're making a decision about the work that you're presenting to them” HIRE THEM TO SPEAK:Follow Daniel Roth: linkedin.com/in/drothcreativeFollow Scott Bloom: eSpeakers BioFollow eSpeakers: eSpeakers Marketplace ABOUT NO MORE BAD EVENTS:Brought to you by eSpeakers and hosted by professional emcee, host, and keynote speaker Scott Bloom, No More Bad Events is where you'll hear from some of the top names in the event and speaking industry about what goes on behind the scenes at the world's most perfectly executed conferences, meetings, and more. Join us as we welcome William Massena back to Keeping Time podcast. Fresh from Geneva Watch Days, join us as we catch up with William, one of the most knowledgeable and highly respected authorities on all things watches. With a breadth of knowledge spanning the entire history of watchmaking, the former CEO of Antiquorum Watches (auction house) and Managing Director of Time Zone offers a perspective and level of expertise few can challenge. The conversation begins with a deep-dive into the newest product launch from Massena Lab, a striking and unique vintage-inspired, modern take on a classic Regatta Yacht Timer. William explains the unique design approach and discusses his partner for this latest collaboration. The new watch is the first piece launched by a new watch company, ALBISHORN, with a very interesting design-ethos. The patented movement is just one noteworthy element of the new watch. Following discussion of William's eponymous brand, Massena Lab, we switch gears to discuss the recent Geneva Watch Days (GWD). Created just a couple of years ago, during the pandemic, William fully describes the purpose behind the show, the founders of the event and the experience of attending. Let's just say that any watch event that can be enjoyed wearing shorts and flip-flops whilst sipping Rosé is surely worthy of serious consideration.  William brings the show to life for our listeners and fully describes the vibe, experience and intentions of this important newcomer to the watch-industry calendar. The newest GWD releases are discussed. Of course, being a conversation between watch nerds, William Massena and Jeremy Oster, the conversation meanders and explores side-topics with a great detour into unraveling the history of the modern Breguet brand (pre-Swatch Group) and Daniel Roth. The conversation further delves into the early history and importance of FP Journe and Vianney Halter and the connection with Breguet. Incredibly, this fascinating conversational diversion occurs whilst discussing Konstantin Chaykin's record breaking "ThinKing" watch. As always, the conversation with William is natural, free-flowing and filled with information and insight that will be new, even for the most knowledgeable listeners. We hope that you enjoy this conversation as much as we enjoy creating Keeping Time Podcast. Visit Keeping Time with Oster Watches blog for more podcast and photos.

While dyslexic thinking is emerging as a skill in its own right, with more than 20,000 LinkedIn members listing "dyslexic thinking" as a skill on their profile, research by LinkedIn and Made by Dyslexia reveals that the vast majority of US and UK dyslexics don't feel that their workplaces know their strengths and talents. Sometimes, the beauty of Shakespeare's poetry takes your breath away. In the case of today's guest, Shakespeare gave him his breath back. You may recognize actor Michael Patrick Thornton from his roles on TV series like Private Practice and The Good Doctor. Twenty years ago, Thornton had just started out in his acting career when he suffered two spinal strokes that nearly ended his life. He survived, but the strokes took away his ability to breathe and speak. A speech therapist helped Thornton find his way back to breath control… by reciting Shakespeare. He talks with Barbara Bogaev about learning to breathe again with the Bard. Michael Patrick Thornton is the co-founder and former artistic director of The Gift Theatre in Chicago. He's played Iago at the Gift, and Richard III in a co-production with Steppenwolf Theatre. "Better branded people get better jobs." - Cher Jones I first discovered the power of personal branding when I tried to move internally at the company I worked for 17.5 years.  I worked in the US division for 16 years and I wanted to move to the Canadian division to make sure that my work experience was relevant in Canada.  It was like I had moved to Boston for 16 years - the Canadian division kept declining me because they didn't understand my skills and abilities.  Some didn't even know that the company had US division workers in Canada.  I started using internal communication and collaboration tools like Yammer and became active on Linkedin.  I volunteered for hackathons, innovation challenges, ERG committees.  It worked.  I was able to move to the Canadian division, I won an award received by less than 1% of employees and I was asked to found and lead a new ERG for parents and caregivers when the pandemic started. As part of my career pivot, I wanted to deepen my understanding of personal branding and looked to Linkedin for experts.  Cher Jones was one of the people I found.  She comes from a TV background and runs the most useful and interactive Linkedin live shows around.  Her audience engagement is off the charts and I've met some truly generous and interesting people in her comments.  In fact, I met one of my first podcast guests through Cher - Renee Lindo (check out her episode - I think it's #3). These days, Cher is one of the few people I show up live for because the quality of her content is unmatched. We did a video version of this podcast so you get the full energy of Cher.   The most fun part of this episode is when I remind Cher of a time when she caught the eye of the editor-in-chief of LinkedIn, Daniel Roth.  He had put out a call for creators to watch and Cher championed herself.  What was truly awesome was how much of her community came out to celebrate her and endorse her. It was wonderful to see her receive the support and accolades - reciprocity is a beautiful thing.  She did indeed get named a Creator to Watch which opened up opportunities - a feature in a LinkedIn marketing piece and 3 LinkedIn Learning courses.  It was huge validation of her work and confirmed for her audience and clients that her approach to personal branding works really well. Cher was able to give us the links to the 3 posts that make up this story.  It's like a mini case study of your brand at work.  Got through each post and read the comments.  The honour and respect has in the industry is on full display.  The people commenting are some of the top experts in the world - great people to follow as well.  Feel free to share or comment on the posts to bring them back into the algorithm.  They are so worthwhile and the information Cher provided is evergreen and still useful. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/whats-trending-linkedin-week-daniel-roth/ https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/top-trends-linkedin-higher-eds-hurting-travel-back-plus-daniel-roth https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6914566445716697089/ Join us for this conversation.  We touch on AI, JZ and the Spice Girls. Each and every person, regardless of profession, is in the industry of hospitality. The interactions you have with everyone create ripples of hospitality that extend well beyond a single moment. To help you create big ripples, we're joined by an entrepreneur whose mission is to help others let their business-based superpowers shine. Joining the show this week is Host of the Podcast “Coffee with Kim” and Co-Founder of Bright Ideas Only, Kim Kaupe. Dan sits down with Kim to learn about why LinkedIn is the best platform to focus your energy on, how we are all in hospitality, and how to be more confident when evangelizing your own work. Takeaways:  Hospitality is the stone you throw into a pond and the impacts on others are the ripples in the water. It is also how people talk about you when you're not in the room, how you make them feel, and what people are walking away from interactions with.  Being the champion of your own accomplishments is difficult. Speak about yourself as you would your best friend. Don't be afraid to acknowledge accomplishments, highlight your skills, and be direct when asked about your career responsibilities.  Business awards, like the “40 Under 40”, can help further your professional goals and raises. Following in the thread of being the champion of your accomplishments, you can also nominate yourself for these awards without fear of being underqualified. If you only have time for one social platform, LinkedIn is the best. It's the only one that is crawled by Google so content doesn't get lost in the archives. As only 1% of LinkedIn users post, your content won't be lost in a heavily saturated feed.  Because LinkedIn shows what your connections comment on and like, it boosts the reach of any content you post, displaying it on a worldwide platform full of C-Suite Executives. Share your knowledge and content, whether you think it's valuable or not. If one person or a hundred thousand people find it important, you made an impact, changed their direction, or taught them something new. When running a business, you are pitching not only the product or service, but also yourself in tandem with your brand. By being succinct in describing your skills, you help the client more confidently make the decision to choose you. Quote of the Show:“Talking about yourself or sharing your knowledge will be like the very first pushup in the gym, but you have to keep going.” - Kim KaupeLinks: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimkaupe/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/kimkaupe?s=20 Personal website: https://kimkaupe.com/  Company website: https://www.brightideasonly.com/  Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/coffee-with-kim/id1612158856  Shout Outs: 14:23 - Shark Tank: https://abc.com/shows/shark-tank  15:08 - Brendan Fraser 16:09 - Ben Affleck 16:10 - Matt Damon 16:11 - Matthew McConaughey  16:17 - Sam Rockwell 16:36 - Glory Daze: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116422/  21:50 - Dolly Parton 21:51 - Oprah 21:54 - The New York Mets: https://www.mlb.com/mets  24:37 - Condé Nast: https://www.condenast.com/  28:16 - LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com  30:28 - The Miami Heat: https://www.nba.com/heat/  33:21 - Gary Vee 41:11 - Daniel Roth: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielroth1/  Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Fratello On Air returns with a rip-roaring episode where we ask you, dear listeners, to step away from the hype. There's a lot of it around these days and it can be overwhelming. We're here to talk about it and have a little fun along the way.Don't believe the hype! No, this isn't a discussion about Public Enemy, but a discussion about watches and some of the brands that have been making their way back into the mainstream. The hype is well orchestrated at times, a little too orchestrated as we'll see. It doesn't mean that the watches are bad, but are they the second coming? We have our doubts.Handgelenks KontrolleWe kick things off with some discussion around the recent Geneva auctions. There were some interesting lots, but the weekend felt a bit muted. The hordes of "AquaNautilus" and Royal Oaks seemed to dominate the scene, which got a bit snoozy. Vintage was there but to a relatively small degree. Mike discusses his impressions after watching some of the proceedings over the weekend and we even chat about certain lots. For the Handgelenks Kontrolle, Balazs is wearing his '70 Grand Seiko 5646-7010 which leads to a discussion on a Seiko Duotime that Mike owns with the same base movement. Mike is back to his trusty Rolex 1016 because he's in comfort mode. The Hype Machine is aliveThe main focus of our show today is to discuss brands that have been inundating our Instagram accounts, the web, and now the auction circuit as recently as this past weekend. Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta are LVMH brands that have received a lot of press coverage recently. In our eyes, they were niche at best and controversially designed at a minimum. Should you be as excited as the collective wants you to be? Then, we see heavy dealer activity on brands like Franck Muller and vintage Piaget. Is this where we're heading or does the push boil down to hype? We discuss and hypothesize why this is happening. The hype is real folks. We hope you enjoyed today's episode. If you have thoughts on upcoming shows, don't hesitate to let us know.

In the race to discover real solutions for the conflicts that plague contemporary society, it is essential that we look to precedent. Many of today's conflicts involve ethno-religious tensions that modern wisdom alone is ill-equipped to resolve. In Third-Party Peacemakers in Judaism: Text, Theory, and Practice (Oxford UP, 2021), Rabbi Dr. Daniel Roth asks us to consider ancient religious and traditional cultural solutions to such present-day issues. Roth presents thirty-six case studies featuring third-party peacemakers drawn from Jewish classical, medieval, and early-modern rabbinic literature. Each case is explored through three layers of analysis - text, theory, and practice. The first layer offers historical and literary analysis of textual case studies, many of which are critically analyzed here for the first time. The second layer examines the theoretical model of third-party peacemaking imbedded within the selected cases and comparing them to other cultural and religious models of third-party peacemaking and conflict resolution. The final layer of analysis, based upon the author's personal experience of religious conflict resolution and peacemaking, looks at the practical implications of these case studies as models for modern peacemaking. Third-Party Peacemakers in Judaism serves as an inspiration for fostering indigenous practices of third-party peacemaking and mediation in the modern era. Lange Söhne, IWC, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, and more. The conversation then turns to whether or not having everything produced in-house is actually good for the greater watch industry, before wrapping up the discussion by talking about the return of Daniel Roth under LVMH, and what we might expect from the brand in the future.

A 2023 Happy New Year and 2022 Review - Episode 226

Happy New Year to all here in 2023. It's going to be a great year. It's a great time to be a programmer. A great time to be building with .NET; you are going to do great things this year. You have what it takes. You are smart, you have great tools, and you have a great team. You are a great leader. This episode is going to be all about remembering what happened this past year at the podcast.   Topics of Discussion:  [1:15] Jeffrey talks about the architect forums he's hosting and facilitating in 2023. You can register here. [1:46] Huge announcement in Microsoft Developer news including: - Android apps on Windows 11 - ARM processors getting big investments - Microsoft Dev Box — in preview — dev workstation in the cloud - Power Pages websites - Large SKU app service; up to 256GB RAM available for those who need it - Azure Arc, the new name of Hybrid Azure. And a single-node Azure Stack for remote locations but the programming model of Azure — looking forward to testing it at the right time. - Azure Container Apps tooling got better, and it became ready for prime time. Every team should be looking at this. - .NET 7 released. [4:11] What might the default application stacks and environments look like on the platform in 2023? - Windows 11 - Visual Studio 2022 w/ ReSharper - .NET 7 - Onion Architecture - Blazor for interactive applications - .NET service workers for back-end jobs and queue listeners - Entity Framework with Azure SQL — add on other storage services as per application. - Azure App Service for hosting while prototyping Azure Container Apps. - Application Insights with the Open Telemetry NuGet packages. - Azure Pipelines paired with Octopus Deploy (keep an eye on GitHub Actions as they fill out support for scenarios you need). - NordVPN for developer workstation work-from-home or remote Wi-Fi. [9:11] When it comes to developer workstations, desktop computers are still giving the most bang for the buck with power, and only a few laptops do the job really well. I have not reviewed all computers, and there are a lot out there. I can vouch for Alienware R series desktops. Liquid-cooled, so they are really quiet, even under full load. Dell Precision laptops are amazing for software engineers. I really wanted to love the Lenovo P1, but the fan was just too loud when it was under load. And we all know that cooling is so important in laptops. When a laptop gets too hot, your BIOS will slow down the processor to keep it from burning up. Then you no longer have a fast processor. And video calls use a good deal of processor, surprisingly — or not. For super mobile laptops that you can use for programming, I really do like the Microsoft Surface Laptop. I wanted to like the Surface Studio laptop, but they inverted the cooling and the battery placement, so it's very uncomfortable on my lap and my wrists unfortunately under load. The wrist wrest gets really hot. Normally the battery is under the wrist rest, but Microsoft swapped it on this one, so it's not fun using it as a laptop on your lap or even on a desk while hot and under load. [13:11] Highlighting some past episodes that will be interesting:  - Highlighting some past episodes over the year that might be interesting. - With Microsoft Orleans providing a new implementation of the Actor design pattern, we have a two-part series interview with Aaron Stannard, the creator of Akka.NET, episodes 172 and 173. - On the IoT front, Wilderness Labs has been trucking along creating system-on-a-chip options that run .NET natively and easily. I interviewed founder and CEO Bryan Costanich. - For those educating themselves for a career in software engineering, my interview with Henry Quillin might be useful. He talks about a programming internship and his education journey, his work earning his Eagle Scout, and how he became a working programmer even as he is just starting university. - More on embedded. Kevin Kirkus was with us in episode 186. He runs a testing team at Intel doing automated testing for their Xeon processor line. The design necessary for testing in this specialized environment gives us all plenty to think about. - For team leaders out there, I interviewed Mark Seemann. He wrote a recent book, Code That Fits In Your Head. He talks about the principles that are in the book. I subsequently bought and read the book, and I wish I had this book earlier in my career. Would have saved me a great deal of time. - On distributed systems, Udi Dahan is always a fascinating gentleman to listen to. Check out episode 192. As the founder and CEO of Particular Software, and the creator of NServiceBus, he is one of the world's leading experts on distributed systems, microservices, and messaging architectures. - Time-tested ideas are continually useful. I had the pleasure of interviewing Philippe Kruchten. He worked at Rational Software back when they were at the forefront of the software process in the 1990s. He published a paper outlining a framework for emergent, agile architecture. He didn't call it that. He called it the 4+1 Architecture, but only because it predated the agile manifesto. If you are an architect, and you aren't aware of this approach to architecture, give episode 195 a listen. - For the Blazor developers, I had Steve Sanderson on in episode 202. Steve is the original designer of Blazor, which has become the new default web application on .NET. He shared about the future of Blazor and WebAssembly. - Because there is so much going on in this space, Daniel Roth also joined me to discuss more Blazor Futures. - GitHub Actions is being talked about quite a bit. While loads of people are using it for builds, people are scratching their heads about where it fits in regarding deployments. Damian Brady, on the GitHub team and a former employee of Octopus Deploy, sheds light on this in episode 206. - Scott Hunter joined me in episode 211. He announced his new role at Microsoft running more of Azure development and .NET. He shared quite a bit behind the scenes regarding Microsoft's strategy there. - For the UX people. Mark Miller is the Chief Architect of DevExpress, the big UI components company. He has a brilliant user experience mind, and I was able to get him talking in episode 212. - Telemetry. We all need it to keep our software stable in production. The Serilog and AutoFac maintainer, Nicholas Blumhardt, joined me to discuss the fundamentals of modern logging and telemetry. Check out episode 217 for that. - More on the testing front, Eduardo Maltez, a software engineer doing some really interesting full system test work shares his thoughts on what makes tests reliable, stable, and fast — and how to fight brittle tests. Episode 224. - We closed out the year on the security front. With LastPass getting hacked and now Rackspace having a hacking-induced major outage, we all need to take action. Troy Vinson, a multi-certified security professional and certified ethical hacker, gave his perspective on the Rackspace breach and what every .NET team should learn from it.   Mentioned in this Episode: Architect Tips — New video podcast! This special edition of the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast is brought to you by Bulgari, recorded earlier this year at Geneva Watch Days 2022. Rick and David sit down with Fabrizio Buonamassa, Product Creation Executive Director at Bulgari, to discuss how Bulgari is pushing the limits of watch design through cross-cultural collaboration.Founded in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, the eponymous Bulgari brand has become synonymous with luxury, with a reputation for stunning jewelry creations and, more recently, exceptional watchmaking. After acquiring the personal brands of Gerald Genta and Daniel Roth in 2000, Bulgari's ascendance in the watch industry was almost guaranteed. Buonamassa joined in 2001, eventually moving into his current role leading the brand's watch design, but it wasn't until 2012---a year after the brand joined the LVMH group---that the Bulgari Octo we know today was introduced. Distinguished by its angular octagonal case, it built off designs from the Gerald Genta brand catalog, and, along with the Serpenticollection, has come to define Bulgari watchmaking. In 2014, though, the brand pushed things further with the Octo Finissimo, an ultrathin hand-wound timepiece that leaned into the original Octo's aesthetic and set the stage for an astonishing string of record-breaking watches and breathtaking collaboration pieces. In this special episode, Buonamassa builds on the brand's stunning collaborations with Japanese architects Tadao Ando and Kazuyo Sejimato explore how the similarities and differences between Japanese and Italian ideals of design and beauty make for a perfect partnership, and what it's like collaborating with outside designers halfway around the world. Buonamassa goes further, though, musing on the concept of beauty, the emotionality of design, and the challenges and rewards of collaboration. Plus, he compares Italian and Japanese cars, and Rick gets him to reveal his personal design process and his biggest regret.
