The Bennets are expecting an addition their party tonight, and sadly for Mrs. Bennet, it's not Mr. Bingley - it's their cousin Mr. Collins, who is next in line to inherit Longbourn. Mrs Bennet proclaims that more People of her class should be like her and follows to ask if she has any children. Colins informs the Bennets that she has only 1 child, a girl, though beautiful, is of a sickly constitution. He goes on giving further praise about Lady Catherine, and eventually Mr Bennet is left very content in knowing that that his cousin is indeed as absurd as he had hoped. They then go to the other room, and Mr Bennet invites Mr Collins to read allowed to the family and it comes out that Collins never reads novels. Chapter 55 heralds the return of Mr. Bingley. Jane's anticipated elation, as well as Mrs. Bennet's cunning manoeuvres to ensure her daughter's fortuity, create an engaging backdrop of intrigue and anticipation. Elizabeth herself, ever the keen observer, navigates the scene with an encouraging balance of foresight, optimism, and practicality. In the prophetic conclusion of the chapter, Elizabeth, secure in Mr. Bingley's fondness for Jane, dreams of an imminent resolution, contingent only on the absence of the enigmatic Mr. Darcy. This foreshadows a compelling trajectory ripe with the potential of romantic fulfillment and familial happiness. The ensuing chapter sets the scene with a tension-filled introduction, as an unexpected lady of upper-crust echelon arrives at the Bennets'. The unanticipated entrance of Lady Catherine de Bourgh brings a bracing breeze from the higher rungs of society, carrying with it the fragrant aroma of intrigue and the potential for conflict - the kind that only a character of her haughtiness can sow.As Lady Catherine arrogantly asserts her familial authority with Elizabeth, it becomes clear that this encounter will force Elizabeth to display her highest courage, and her steadfast conviction in her self-worth. In the face of aristocratic disdain, Elizabeth's steadfastness of character begins to truly shine, heralding a battle between societal norms and personal conviction.

Chapters thirteen and fourteen draw us into the Bennet home as unanticipated correspondence introduces a new character and stirs commotion within the family. But before we proceed, allow me to set the scene.Morning finds the Bennet family at breakfast, their daily routines interrupted by the announcement that a certain Mr. Collins, a stranger and a gentleman, would soon pay them a visit. The news is unexpected and leaves the Bennets abuzz with curiosity—as Mr. Bennet anticipates an entertaining encounter, Mrs. Bennet hastens preparations for a suitable dinner, and the daughters indulge fantasies about a potential suitor. However, when Mr. Collins' arrival does not bring a scarlet coat-wearing man, the youngest Bennet girls find him lacking. Mr. Collins, the heir to Longbourn, is thus introduced amidst an amusing scene of familial reactions. His arrival is followed in Chapter fourteen with a dinner, where his overzealous respect for his patroness, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, stand out against Mr. Bennet's calculated humility. With keen observation and sardonic humour, Mr. Bennet pokes our guest with questions that unravel the unfeigned, if not absurd, persona of Mr. Collins, endearing us to another fascinating character in Jane Austen's colourful tapestry. By the chapter's conclusion, this clergyman's airs and his surprising aptness for flattery underpin a kind of ironic charm.

Hearkening to the sharp wit and incisive social commentary unique to Austen, we learn more of the precarious financial situation of the Bennets, crafted by the setbacks of an estate entailed and a maternal fortune insufficient to secure the future of their five daughters. As this chapter unfolds, much is revealed to us, the dwellers in the village of Meryton, about the Bennet family and its fondness for paying regular visits to their Aunt Philips and the nearby millinery. The younger daughters, Catherine and Lydia, who are particularly drawn to this pastime, are energized by the regiment's recent establishment in Meryton, delighting in the officers' names and connections. As the young ladies revel in their newfound social circle, the patriarch of the family, Mr. Bennet, critiques their silliness, sparking a humorous discourse on the girls' sense and the adults' shared past affections for uniforms. While the talk of officers and red coats continues, an unexpected invitation for Jane to dine in Netherfield interrupts the peaceful morning and sets in motion a string of events that further intertwine the lives of the Bennets and the Bingleys.Guided by cunning maternal instincts and a potential loom of rain, Jane sets off towards Netherfield on horseback. As expected, our dear heroine Elizabeth, concerned for her sister's health after a rain-soaked journey, decides to visit Jane on foot, navigating through the dirt and puddles in true Austen heroine fashion. The unexpected arrival of a muddy Elizabeth astounds the Bingley household, but in true narrative irony, it causes her to find favor in Bingley's eyes. Her reception, however, is less warm from his sisters and the aloof Mr. Darcy. However, due to Jane's illness, Elizabeth is invited to linger longer at Netherfield, much to her own relief and her mother's delight.

In this episode, we engage with the socially amiable Sir William Lucas and his family, who live in all their knightly pride and ample entitlement at Lucas Lodge. Despite the pomp, there is an understated charm to Sir William, a product of humility gently carved by his past as a tradesman. His family forms a pleasant foil to our Bennets, with a particular focus on the Lucases' eldest daughter Charlotte, a sensible friend and confidante for Elizabeth Bennet. There is much talk about a recently held ball with the central topic being perhaps the most deciding factor of our story, Mr. Bingley's preference of Jane Bennet. The nuances of Mr. Bingley and Jane Bennet's budding affection are speculated and scrutinised, with the notably infamous Mr. Darcy, despite his disregard for social pleasantries, begins to trickle into the canvas of our primary concern. The initial impressions and opinions regarding the family of Netherfield give way to deeper interactions and recurring visits. Bingley's admiration for the eldest Bennet becomes increasingly obvious, though not to the eyes of society at large - Jane's strength of feeling and composed manner skilfully disguises her burgeoning affections. We are also privy to a rather candid discussion between Elizabeth and Charlotte concerning the strengths and pitfalls of concealing one's affections in the game of love and courtship. Little do they suspect the unexpected turn of events they are about to encounter. For, indeed, Elizabeth unknowingly begins to occupy a corner of Mr. Darcy's mind, a place she presently shares with unaesthetic opinions of her appearance and manners. Yet, entirely unbeknown to her, the aspects that were once subjects of criticism become, oddly enough, sources of attraction for our leading man.

The Bennets all need a good night's rest to prepare themselves for that visit, and this week's story will help you fall into deep and restful sleep as well. ----- Welcome to the Jane Austen Bedtime Stories podcast! Pride and Prejudice Audiobook by Jane Austen   Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=16526076 About the book  Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 romantic novel of manners written by Jane Austen. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. Its humour lies in its honest depiction of manners, education, marriage, and money during the Regency era in England.  Mr. Bennet of Longbourn estate has five daughters, but his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family will be destitute upon his death. Thus, it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others, which is a motivation that drives the plot. The novel revolves around the importance of marrying for love rather than money or social prestige, despite the communal pressure to make a wealthy match.  Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and has inspired many derivatives in modern literature. For more than a century, dramatic adaptations, reprints, unofficial sequels, films, and TV versions of Pride and Prejudice have portrayed the memorable characters and themes of the novel, reaching mass audiences.   Plot summary  The novel is set in rural England in the early 19th century. Mrs. Bennet attempts to persuade Mr. Bennet to visit Mr. Bingley, a rich bachelor recently arrived in the neighbourhood. After some verbal sparring with her husband, Mrs. Bennet believes he will not call on Mr. Bingley. Shortly afterwards, he visits Netherfield, Mr. Bingley's rented residence, much to Mrs. Bennet's delight. The visit is followed by an invitation to a ball at the local assembly rooms that the entire neighbourhood will attend.  At the ball, we are first introduced to the whole Netherfield party, which consists of Mr. Bingley, his two sisters, the husband of one of his sisters, and Mr. Darcy, his dearest friend. Mr. Bingley's friendly and cheerful manner earns him popularity among the guests. He appears attracted to Jane Bennet (the Bennets' eldest daughter), with whom he dances twice. Mr. Darcy, reputed to be twice as wealthy, is haughty and aloof, causing a decided dislike of him. He declines to dance with Elizabeth (the Bennets' second-eldest daughter), stating that she is not attractive enough to tempt him. Elizabeth finds this amusing and jokes about it with her friends.  Mr. Bingley's sisters, Caroline and Louisa, later invite Jane to Netherfield for dinner. On her way there, Jane is caught in a rain shower and develops a bad cold, forcing her to stay at Netherfield to recuperate, much to Mrs. Bennet's delight. When Elizabeth goes to see Jane, Mr. Darcy finds himself getting attracted to Elizabeth (stating she has "fine eyes"), while Miss Bingley grows jealous, as she herself has designs on Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth herself is indifferent and unaware of his developing interest in her.   #prideandprejudice #janeausten #audiobooksfree #audiobooksyoutube #englishaudiobooks

PRIDE & PREJUDICE is another wonderful version of Jane Austen's beloved novel. Keira Knightly stars as Elizabeth, the second eldest of the five Bennet sisters. Elizabeth helps the eldest daughter, Jane, woo the rich Mr. Bingley, who has taken residence in the countryside where the Bennets live. Bingley's sister, Caroline, clearly disapproves of Jane and the Bennet family, but it is his friend Mr. Darcy who convinces Bingley to break off the relationship. Elizabeth is furious when she hears, from Darcy's own lips, about his meddling. It has become clear, however, that Darcy has fallen in love with her. Can they overcome their pride and prejudice to find true happiness?

Joining me for this episode's online chat is special guest all the way from the UK and the author of one of my favourite books of 2019, Beth O'Leary! Beth is a Sunday Times bestselling author whose debut novel the Flatshare has been translated into more than 30 languages. She wrote The Flatshare on her train journey to and from her job at a children's publisher and now lives in the Hampshire countryside and writes full time. Beth's second novel is The Switch and was released in April 2020. Beth spoke with me about the difficult nature of a second book, especially when the first book is a bestseller, and about how she generates her ideas. She also chose some fabulous books and delicious pairings to share. The pairings: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." So begins Jane Austen's classic novel of manners and mores in early-nineteenth-century England. As the Bennets prepare their five grown daughters to enter into society, each shows personality traits that illuminate their future prospects as wives. Jane, the oldest, is the most demure and traditional, and Lydia, the youngest, the most headstrong and impulsive. Attention centers on haughty second-born Elizabeth, and her blossoming relationship with the dashing but aloof Fitzwilliam Darcy. Adversaries at first in the endless rounds of balls, parties, and social gatherings, they soon develop a grudging respect for one another that blossoms into romance when each comes to appreciate the tender feelings that course beneath the veneer of their propriety and reserve. Beth chose a light, yet filling and traditionally English Victoria Sponge with a refreshing Pimms and lemonade to drink to add a fruity sharpness that cuts through the cream. In Five Years by Rebecca Serle When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Cohan is asked 'Where do you see yourself?' at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready. Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriend's marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan. But when she wakes up, she's suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date. It's the same night—December 15—but 2025, five years in the future. After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020. She can't shake what has happened. It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isn't the kind of person who believes in visions. That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella. Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind. That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision. Brimming with joy and heartbreak, In Five Years is an unforgettable love story that reminds us of the power of loyalty, friendship, and the unpredictable nature of destiny. Beth didn't want to give anything away but thought that a delicious cupcake with a surprise centre would work well given the twist in this book, but then you'd need a glass of white wine too to sip away as you read to the end of this assured, crisp and classy story!
