Winner of the National Book Award and now the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, James is a subversive reimagining of “Huckleberry Finn” told from the perspective of Jim, Huck's enslaved companion on the raft ride. Percival Everett tells Robert Kirkwood about the book and reveals he read Huck Finn too many times in the research! We also hear about the science behind James Bond's gadgets and Agatha Christie's poisons with Kathryn Harkup and find some new books in the RNIB Library.
A year ago, Percival Everett published his twenty-fourth novel, “James,” and it became a literary phenomenon. It won the National Book Award, and, just this week, was announced as the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. “James” offers a radically different perspective on the classic Mark Twain novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”: Everett centers his story on the character of Jim, who is escaping slavery. The New Yorker staff writer Julian Lucas is a longtime Everett fan, and talked with the novelist just after “James” was released. “My Jim—he's not simple,” Everett tells Julian Lucas. “The Jim that's represented in ‘Huck Finn' is simple.” This segment originally aired on March 22, 2024.
Tom Sawyer Abroad is a novel by Mark Twain published in 1894. It features Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn in a parody of Jules Verne-esque adventure stories. In the story, Tom, Huck, and Jim set sail to Africa in a futuristic hot air balloon, where they survive encounters with lions, robbers, and fleas to see some of the world's greatest wonders, including the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Like Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer, Detective, the story is told using the first-person narrative voice of Huck Finn. (Adapted from Wikipedia.) Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 14, 2025 is: druthers DRUH-therz noun plural Druthers is an informal word that refers to the power or opportunity to choose—in other words, free choice. It is used especially in the phrase if one had one's druthers. // If I had my druthers, I would travel all the time. See the entry > Examples: “If I had my druthers, if I made the sequel to ‘Companion,' it would just be a shot of her on the side of the road, cutting out her tracking chip and then cutting to her on a farm with a couple of million dollars.” — Drew Hancock, quoted in Variety, 1 Feb. 2025 Did you know? Nowadays, you're much more likely to encounter the plural noun druthers than its singular forebear, but that wasn't always the case. Druther, an alteration of “would rather” in some U.S. English dialects, first appeared in writing in the late 1800s. “Any way you druther have it, that is the way I druther have it,” says Huck to Tom in Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer, Detective (a sequel to the more famous Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which also included the word druther). This example of metanalysis (the shifting of a sound from one element of a phrase to another) had been around for some time in everyday speech when Twain put those words in Huck's mouth. By then, in fact, druthers had also become a plural noun, so Tom could reply, “There ain't any druthers about it, Huck Finn; nobody said anything about druthers,” though druthers didn't overtake druther in popularity (at least in print) until the mid-1900s.

Since its publication in 1885, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been celebrated as one of the great American works of literature. But the novel has also been criticized for how Mark Twain stereotyped Black characters like Jim, the enslaved man who befriends Huck Finn. Now, author David Walker and illustrator Marcus Kwame Anderson have reimagined this story with Jim at its center. Their new graphic novel, Big Jim and the White Boy, is an action story filled with adventures, fight sequences and an acknowledgment of the danger of the world Jim operates within. In today's episode, Anderson and Walker join NPR's Scott Simon to discuss the novel, including what they did to turn Jim into a multidimensional character, their decision to keep the N-word in their retelling and whether Huck and Jim were ever really friends. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

On this week's mini-episode, I'd like to challenge you to get your students set up on Canva and help them get comfortable on the platform with a simple assignment that will give you a great fall display, literary travel posters. Have you seen PBS' The Great Read posters, which are available for free download on the PBS site? I'll link them in the show notes. They're fabulous. Each poster invites the viewer into a literary world. “Join Don Quixote on an Epic Quest” is overlaid on a lovely background of receding windmills with a small warning note, “Be Wary of Hulking Giants.” “Visit Wonderland” is fixed above a drawing of Alice falling down between purple mushrooms, with the catchy tagline, “See as many as six impossible things before breakfast!” The series includes Dune, Narnia, Harry Potter, 1984, Huck Finn, Gatsby, and more. They're stellar additions to your classroom decor, for sure, but they also lend themselves beautifully as visual mentor texts for this little project. Ask students to choose a book that's been meaningful to them in the past, one with a richly imagined setting. Show them the PBS posters and ask them what components seem consistent across the posters. Ask them to consider which posters they find most appealing and why, then use similar components in designing their own, on Canva. If you're new to Canva, I'm going to link a free step-by-step course I made for you so you can easily learn the basics that will help you and your students with a project like this. Starting with a simple project like this one is a great way to get everyone oriented onto the platform and help students warm up to design work, at the same time that you create a fun book-focused set of posters you can use on your door, in your hallway, or around your classroom library. OK, that's a wrap on today's quick episode. I hope you're heading over now to set up a free Canva for Education account if you don't have one yet! And no, I'm still not sponsored by them, but feel free to suggest me to any Canva Executives you know. You just tend to get better if you choose to.”“One might not know where they're going in the future, but most of the time, we know where we don't want to be.”Episode Highlights:Dr. Akira explores redefining happiness and success, emphasizing the importance of celebrating not just the results but the journey itself. He shares personal stories and reflections on his childhood and career that have shaped his current philosophy.Childhood Incidents:Dr. Akira grew up in a household where his parents had blue-collar jobs, but very little financial stability. As a young teenager, Dr. Akira experienced a lot of confusion, around money issues. These challenges snowballed into stress, anxiety, depression, irritability, and anger. At some point, Dr. Akira questioned whether this was what life had to be. Thankfully, he had mentors who offered him hope, showing him that there was more to life than his lived experience and anxiety.Cultural and Leadership Influences:Dr. Akira's grandparents moved to the United States and opened a fish market in New York. One thing Dr. Akira noticed was that they always put their employees first, and the dividends of this approach paid off in their interactions with customers. For instance, they always found reasons to celebrate with their employees, and it was always authentic. At Mugen Psychiatry, Dr. Akira applies the same principle. He invests in both the clinicians' present and future because he believes that happy clinicians do a better job. Temperament and Personality:Growing up, Dr. Akira was quiet, reserved, and quite introverted—always preferring to sit alone rather than interact with others. No one would have ever imagined him as a psychiatrist. Over the years, he has become an “extroverted-appearing” introvert. He has stepped out of his comfort zone and learned how to have conversations with other people.Cultural Epiphanies:Coming from Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Akira had a tough time understanding the Southern accent when he moved to Alabama. He recalls a day when he was attending a literature class, and the teacher was reading Huck Finn with a deep Southern accent that made Dr. Akira question if she was reading in English at all. What Brings Out the Best in Dr. Alan Akira?Dr. Akira thrives when there is a fine balance that allows him to lean into things that recharge him. He is working on a study to help him understand what drains him versus what recharges him. He is also learning to appreciate that what recharges him might not work for others.Soapbox Moment:Dr. Akira challenges us to learn to define things operatively on an individual level and to allow ourselves permission to double down on what works for us. He also invites us to check out his weekly newsletter on LinkedIn.Support the Show.

In his new novel “James,” Percival Everett reimagines the story of Huck Finn through the eyes of the enslaved protagonist Jim. Where Twain used Jim as a plot device, Everett offers a fully realized portrait of the man who dreams of traveling “safely through the light of the world.” A prolific author and an English professor at USC, Everett's earlier work inspired the film “American Fiction.” We talk to Everett about his writing, his faith in readers to understand difficult text, and this latest book, which is being lauded by critics as a new American classic. Guests: Percival Everett, author, "James"; English professor, USC - his other books include "I Am Not Sidney Poitier," "The Trees," "God's Country," and "Erasure," which was adapted for the film "American Fiction." "James" is his 34th novel
In 1592 the Japanese launched a massive invasion of the Korean Peninsula. The Japanese leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi believed that Korea would submit without much of a fight and that his army would very quickly move on to the real target, the capital of Ming China. Six years later the Japanese were still fighting in Korea. What the Koreans call the Imjin War has recently been redubbed the Great East Asian War by scholars in recognition of it's truly massive scope. Based on the sheer number of soldiers involved this was the largest war fought anywhere in the word in the 1500's. But despite that this conflict has remained relatively obscure outside of Korea. Why? Tune-in and find out how eager to please sandal-bearers, Huck Finn, and the most convoluted title for a leader in history all play a role in the story.
James—the new novel by Percival Everett—retells, reframes, and reimagines Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim, the black man whose flight from slavery quickly entangles with the journey of Huck, on the run after faking his own death to escape his violent father. James gives us the events of Twain's picaresque from a vital new standpoint—opening up previously unexplored plains of character consciousness as it does so—expanding and subverting the original story. And the novel doesn't just fill in the blanks about Jim's movements when our protagonists are separated, but also wrests the narrative arc itself in new and astonishing directions.Buy James here: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/james-4*The Mississippi River, 1861. And together, the unlikely pair must face the most dangerous odyssey of them all . . .From the shadows of Huck Finn's mischievous spirit, Jim emerges to reclaim his voice, defying the conventions that have consigned him to the margins.*Percival Everett is the author of over thirty books, including So Much Blue, Telephone, Dr No and The Trees, which was shortlisted for the 2022 Booker Prize and won the 2022 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize. The boys are sent straight to bed, and at 11 they start their plan. Huck however forgot the butter and Tom send him down to the cellar to grab it while he heads off to see Jim. Huck heads downstairs and when he comes up to the landing, he comes across aunt Sally who demands what he has been doing. She is in such a panic that she believes his lies for the moment, and send him into the sitting room where he finds around 20 farmers with guns and all sorts waiting to take action against the people trying to steal Jim. Huck starts to feel sick. The farmers are talking about their plan of action but Huck can tell that they are nervous. As Huck's tension rises, the butter that he has hidden under his hat starts to melt. This causes Aunt Sally to rip his hat off where she finds the butter and cornbread. She forgives him for stealing food and send him back to bed. Huck flies upstairs and down the lightening rod and runs over to the cabin to get Jim. As he arrives he starts to hear then men coming. In just the lick of time, Jim, Huck, and Tom fly for the canoe. As they jump the fence, Tom's trousers catch on a nail and the sound causes the farmers to fire in their direction. It seems that everyone got away unscathed, and they make their way to the island where Jim is finally declared free.Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
In a new novel, Percival Everett offers a radically different perspective on the classic story “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” Everett tells the story of Jim, who is escaping slavery; he calls his book “James.” “My Jim—he's not simple,” Everett tells Julian Lucas. “The Jim that's represented in Huck Finn is simple.” Everett, whose 2001 novel “Erasure” was adapted as the Oscar-winning film “American Fiction,” restores Jim's inner life as a father surviving enslavement, and forced to play along with the pranks of two white boys. But like other Black authors, including Toni Morrison and Ishmael Reed, Everett considers Twain's original a central American text grappling with slavery. “I imagine myself in a conversation with Twain doing this. And one of the things I think he and I would both agree on is that he doesn't write Jim's story because he's not capable of writing Jim's story—any more than I'm capable of writing Huck's story.”

They go for a second try and get some more but not before they get a whack from Aunt Sally. They then go to get some garter snakes, and these too accidentally escape, and like before, Aunt Sally goes nuts on Huck and Tom. Even after a week, Aunt Sally is still Jumpy. Then take all the animals down to Jim, and he is more uncomfortable now than ever. After about a week, all of the work is ready for Jim's escape and Tom says that there is just 1 thing left. The anonymous letters to warn the guards that someone is going to try and break Jim out. So they start writing some notes to get the family even more Jumpy, and it seems like Aunt Sally is going to die from fright from a small breeze.Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Neither Huck nor Jim knows what a coat of arms is, so Tom tries to explain what it is by coming up with one for Jim. Tom comes up with one and tries to explain the design to them, but they don't really understand what everything is supposed to me; Tom says it isn't important, however. Tom then decides that carving the inscriptions into the wood isn't going to do. They need stone. So Huck and Tom set off to the mill and steal the grindstone. It is incredibly heavy though, and they nearly crush each other wheeling it home. When about halfway home, they break Jim out to help him get the grindstone back. Before going to bed, Tom asks if Jim has any spiders or snakes around, and on Jim's saying “No,” Tom says that they will get him one. Jim greatly protests this, but Tom is very persuasive and convinces him to do it.Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
Author Percival Everett had a big year, with the adaptation of his novel Erasure, "American Fiction," taking home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now, he's written a new novel, a retelling of the story of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn through the perspective of Jim, the enslaved man who joins Huck's journey. Everett joins us to discuss James.

When they go to sit down for breakfast, Aunt Sally comes in raging! She has no idea what happened to Uncle Sylas' other shirt. She then goes on about several missing candles, and a missing spoon, blaming Sylas for having never patched up the rat holes in the basement. Their slave then comes in and mentions that a sheet has gone missing too. After a little longer, Sylas produces the missing spoon from his pocket. This is too much for Aunt Sally and she tells everyone to get out of the house and leave her alone for the rest of the day. Tom and Huck then decide that they need the spoon, so they will need to confuse Aunt Sally to get a new spoon, so they play a game with her where they constantly add and remove a spoon until she can't figure out how many she actually owns. Following this, Tom and Huck get the tools to Jim, and spend the evening helping him rip up his bedsheet to make a ladder and go to baking a pie to help sneak it to him.Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

They are digging with case knives, and after for several hours, they realise that their case knife digging is going to take them years. Finally, Tom suggests that they use picks instead, and just let on that they used case knives, even if it isn't moral. After taking up their new venture with picks, they make short work of the digging. After digging all night, they boys try to sneak back inside via the lightening rod, but Tom's hands are too sore to climb. So again, they suggest that they “break the rules” and let on that tom climbed the rod, so Tom climbs the stairs. The following day, the boys steal a brass candlestick, and some spoons to make Jim some pens with. That night, the boys finished their digging and crawl through to wake Jim up. He is so happy to see them and hugs and kisses them. Before moving to business, they reminisce of old times. They then tell Jim the plan to get him out of Prison, and they then head back home again. The following day, they break up the candlestick and head to the cabins to try and sneak it to Jim. The plan gets tricky though because Tom forgot to close the lean-to's door and the dogs made their way into Jim's cell. Thankfully the man who brings Jim his food just attributes it to witches.Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Tom keeps complaining that the situation is too easy; they need to come up with the difficulties themselves. Tom says that they need a very basic light to make it seem more authentic, but they could probably use a lantern, and no one would notice, it just isn't the “Right” way. He then says that they need to make a saw so that they can cut the bed of Jim's bed off, even though they could just lift the bed off of the chain on Jim's leg. Tom just wants to make the plan difficult for the “story.” Tom then suggests that Jim needs a rope latter because everyone else does, even though he would have no need for it. Huck is against it, but as he doesn't know as much as Tom, he goes along with the idea. Tom gets very frustrated with Huck's constant attempts to make the plan easier. Tom and Huck then conclude that they can steal anything they want provided that it will help Jim get out of jail. This is where Tom gets his idea to dig Jim out of the jail with little knives. Huck again protests, saying that it would take years for them to give him out and suggests that they could use the rusty tools in the shed. Tom just says it wouldn't be proper…Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

While there, Tom keeps shutting down Huck's sensible plans on breaking Jim out, saying that they are too easy. Tom needs a great and daring escape plan like those he has read about in books. The following day, they wake up early and decide to head over to the slave quarters to see if they can talk to the man who took Jim his food on the previous day. The two convince him to take them to see the prisoner. When the door opens and the boys step inside, Jim accidentally calls out to Huck, asking if that is Tom Sawyer with him. The boys have to think on their feet, and when the slave asks Jim why he called out, Tom claims that he didn't hear anything and that the man must have imagined it. After both Huck and Jim confirm that no one said anything he goes on a little rant about having been tortured by witches of late, and asks Tom and Huck not to tell on him to Uncle Sylas. They agree, and he goes ranting on again. During this brief rant, Tom and Huck make their ways over to Jim and tell him not to worry about any digging noises, and that they are going to break him out…SUPPORT THE SHOWGet SurfShark and protect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389 Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers to stop selling your information:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389 *SOCIAL*INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreads TWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/ Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

He finds him and Tom barely believes what he can see, thinking that Huck is probably a ghost. After proving it to Tom, Huck tells him about everything that is going on, and even tells him that he is planning to steal Jim back out of Slavery. To Huck's astonishment, Tom agrees to help get Jim free. He and Tom split ways again, agreeing to have Huck take Tom's bag, with Tom arriving a later on pretending to be somebody else. The Family is exciting to have another visitor at home and they welcome Tom, using a different name, with open arms, saying that where he is going is too far away, and that they have also put on extra food for him. Tom starts spinning a yarn about him being from Ohio and goes on telling everything about the fake town. Eventually he tells them that he is “Sid Sawyer” another cousin, and the family embraces him too. During the dinner, the kids of the Phelps' talk about a show in town, and Uncle Sylus says that the new prisoner (Jim) told him it was all a big con. Huck knows that it is the King and the Duke, and after settling in his bedroom with Tom, they climb out of the window into town to see the King and Duke being tarred and feathered and ran out of town.SUPPORT THE SHOWGet SurfShark and protect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389 Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers to stop selling your information:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389 *SOCIAL*INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreads TWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

He scopes out the area and details the farm for the audience. Once he gets close enough to the house, a pack of hounds runs to him and encircles him, howling at the top of their lungs. A slave woman comes out and chases the dogs away, and eventually, a woman who Huck presumes to be Mrs Phelps comes out and embraces him like a lost child. Huck is confused, but goes along with the hug, finding out that the Phelps family had been waiting for their nephew Tom to arrive and he is 3 days late. She takes Huck inside and starts asking questions about the journey and asks if he was stuck on a sandbar. He lies about the delay and is convincing enough to let Mrs Phelps rattle on about all that has been going on recently. She then comes to ask him about his family and Huck starts to panic. Just in the nick of time however, Mr Phelps is heard coming home, and Mrs Phelps rushes Huck away planning to surprise her husband with his “Nephew.” When he enters the home he is downtrodden about Tom having not arrived, but Mrs Phelps pulls Huck out of his hiding place and exclaims that their Nephew Tom Sawyer arrived while he was out. Huck is instantly washed over with a wave of relief. He can only pretend to be a stranger for so long, but he can pretend to be his best friend Tom Sawyer for years to come.SUPPORT THE SHOWGet SurfShark and protect yourself online today VPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389 Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389 Get data brokers to stop selling your information:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389 *SOCIAL*INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreads TWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98 KO-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads STORE: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/ Support the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads

Did you think we were dead? Brian apologizes for the long break between episodes and Nate does not. They then open the new year with a banger about being boring. Let's face it... most of us don't live what could be called "interesting" lives. We don't travel extensively, kill and then circumcise dead Philistines, explore new continents, build spaceships -- and yet, perhaps the most commonly given piece of SASF advice is BE AN INTERESTING CHARACTER. Are we all failing to live like King David, like Cyrus Smith, like Huck Finn? The answer is actually yes. The guys dig into the discussion of what it means to be interesting. And it starts with being interested. #MostInterestingManintheWorld #SASF #StoriesAreSoulFood #Characters #Fiction #parenting #insects #RiotAndtheDance
